The Barker NEWSLETTER OF THE SOUTHERN COLORADO KENNEL CLUB April, 2011 From The President s Pen I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that was so very generous with your giving at last month s meeting. A plea to help a young person with financial help spaying and neutering her dogs was given and YOU came through. We collected over $200, and with the help of Ann Haley with transportation and Carol Kuhns and the local Humane Society, we were able to secure the work done at a very reasonable cost. The dogs have been fixed and the young person is very thankful. Your kindness and generosity in these tough economic times is exciting to see THANK YOU!! We also decided last month to set up an Emergency Fund that will be used on a case by case basis. Requests will be made to the BOD and will be reviewed and decided upon. This fund will be funded by your generous donations and by our Brags each month. The membership decided that we would charge a $1 per brag fee for each brag presented at the meetings, so don t forget to bring your cash if you have a brag!! There are two board positions that are up for re-election this year. The Nominating committee has been soliciting people for these positions and will present their slate at the April meeting. As our by-laws state, nominations will be made from the floor at the May meeting and the election held in June. If the offered slate is un-opposed there will be no need for an election and the new terms start in July and runs for two years. My personal thanks goes out to everyone that works so hard at keeping this club and all its activities running. We are doing great things in our communities and hope to continue, but can only do that by your continued work and support. If you aren t involved and would like to plug in, just give me a call, there are many different opportunities where you can help. TRAINING CENTER NEWS Classes are going well. All six week courses are full. (Puppy, both Beginners, Agility, Intermediate Obedience, and Therapy Prep) The rally drop-in is a popular drop-in and has become crowded. A second rally drop-in and a six week rally foundations course are being discussed. The starting time for the Open/Utility drop-in may need to be earlier as there has been up to 5 utility drop-ins plus the open drop-ins. All are good problems to have. Marsha would like a wagon, crate dolly, car creeper or something similar to help move the agility equipment around. If you have anything like this that you would be willing to donate it would be appreciated. One of Marsha s agility students (Jane Hollingsworth) made an agility ladder and donated it to the club. This is used to teach rear end awareness. We can also use it in other classes. From the Garden City Shows Brags!!! April Book Review by Diana Werner The Search, by Nora Roberts. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 2010. $26.95, available at the public library. Fiona is a dog trainer; Simon has a Lab puppy, Jaws, who desperately needs training. Fiona is a single woman living in an isolated house, alone except for her brilliant search-and-rescue dog, the tragic secret in her mysterious past, and an occasional message from a crazed serial killer. Simon is tall, dark, and handsome, clean-living and dependable, strong but silent, and determinedly single. Fiona is a strong -- and strong-minded -- woman, the leader of the search-and-rescue team. Simon is a professional wood artist and fine cabinetmaker, manly but in touch with his creative, sensitive side. Really, folks, they're obviously made for each other. Could such a pair of cliches-on-the-hoof possibly avoid falling in love? Would you really want them to escape fate? In the expert hands of popular romance novelist Nora Roberts, their future (just one future, not futures plural) is safe. Well, what did you expect? When I try to describe this romantic thriller, it sounds corny beyond belief, but I have to admit I enjoyed it. Roberts does what she does extremely well. The characters are likeable, the search-and-rescue details are interesting, the serial killer is scary, the tension is tense, and the dogs are fun if a little one-dimensional. Same plot, but without the dogs, I wouldn't bother. INGREDIENTS: 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour 2 eggs 1/2 cup canned pumpkin Oh So Yummy Dog Treats 2 tablespoons peanut butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 4 tablespoons carob chips DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350. 2. Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable. Work in carob chips. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces. 3. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.. 3

SCKC March 15, 2011 General Membership Meeting Called to order 7 PM Members Present: Ruella Anderson, Flo Andrews, Bobbi Baker, Jodi Berisford,Lynette Carson, Donna & Scott Darnell, Misty Davis, Maureen Delduca, Dee Dunlap, Kathy Gallina, Lisa Golob, Milli Goodman, Kaitlin & Marian Haddan, Ann Haley, Pat Hill, Diana Hughes, Pat Hughes, Gail Kingrey, Pat Lester, Marsha Littau, Nola Long,Crystal Messersmith, Joshua & Katie Pope, Bob & Nancy Russell, Jennifer Sams, Kathy Seley, Heather & Ray Smith, Evelyn Wertenberger, Diana Werner, Renee Wolfe, Denise Betz and Bobbie Blood. Minutes from Feb. meeting approved as written in The Barker. Treasurer s Report: Report reviewed and accepted. There are no outstanding bills. Correspondence: We received a thank you letter and certificate from the National Assoc. of Chiefs of Police for our support of the K9 Police Program, AKC emails regarding the duties and importance of the AKC delegate, and the AKC s recent decision to place a moratorium on approval of any new club affiliate and show applications. All existing shows will not be affected. Discussion followed regarding recent downturn in show attendance on the national level but not in our region. Decision was made to contact our delegate advising the AKC Board to consider geographic and population issues when limiting new shows rather than a blanket national limit. The secretary will draft and send a letter as such. Committees: Training Classes: updated registration forms are now in use. There is a new liability form that anyone attending any drop in class is required to sign, including parent/guardian for anyone under age 18 years. Drop in persons are also asked to sign in each time they attend a class. A motion carried for the club to purchase a set of small/medium/large Neat Feet, an item used to assist in training dogs in proper stance position. Show: Renee has been working on securing additional space for this year s show for the Obedience and Rally participants. Two adjacent buildings will be available. This should provide adequate space for crating and competing for a large number of entries. After several years of being the vendor coordinator, Ginny Carson, is stepping down and agrees to hand over all her information to her replacement. Members are asked to please volunteer to take this on. Thanks Ginny for all your hard work. We also need someone to take over coordinating the B Fun match held on the Friday before the formal show. Donna Darnell reminded members to consider sponsoring a specific breed or obedience/rally trophy. Information is available at the training center. Cost is $10 for each trophy each day and members must sign up or contact Donna no later than May 1 st if interested. Updated AKC rule books are available for Rally and Obedience trials. Contact Flo Andrews if you would like to purchase one. New Business: Renee opened a discussion of the club considering establishing an emergency fund for unusual circumstances related to dogs in the community. Currently there is a young person in the community with no real family support that is in dire need of having her dogs spayed/neutered. Members present generously donated funds tonight and it was agreed that in the future, anyone wishing to make a brag would donate to the fund. Membership: First readings for Jeri Strohl and Jane Hollandsworth, (both individual). Second reading for Julie Crain (family). Voting completed and the Crain family accepted. Adjourned at 8:10 PM. Respectfully submitted by Milli Goodman, Secretary 4

Southern Colorado Kennel Club April 5, 2011 Board Minutes Called to order at 6:55 PM Members Present: Pat Hill, Flo Andrews, Connie Smalley, Will Hughes, Milli Goodman, Lisa Golob, Crystal Messersmith, Renee Wolfe. Show Committee: DeeAnn Ying, Joan Jordan, Donna and Scott Darnell and Felicity Holloway. Show Committee members invited. November show discussed and details worked on. Treasurer s report: discussed and approved. Correspondance: received and reviewed AKC Delegate meeting minutes from March. Also received response from our delegate regarding our club s concern of AKC limiting new shows on a national basis rather than considering regional show concentrations. Lee also had received a similar letter from a breed club in New Mexico and he will present our input at the next AKC delegate meeting. Old Business: Crystal will organize a handler s seminar for Spring of 2012. The Sportsmanship Award committee will work together to establish criteria for nominations. New Business: Connie has several training books she will donate to the club and we will establish a lending library for members. A more formal method of recording members volunteer hours is being established in an attempt to avoid confusion at the end of the year. Will Hughes will head a nominating committee for the two Board positions set to expire in June. Adjourned at 8:50 PM.
