2017 Year in Review

Our Philosophy WE BELIEVE THAT EVERY CAT MATTERS Including those with special needs. At Purrfect Pals, our highest priority is taking in the cats and kittens who need us most those who other shelters and rescue groups might not have the resources to help. This includes older cats, cats with major medical needs, cats with chronic illnesses (including FIV and Feline Leukemia) and those with behavioral challenges.

Our Placement Programs Our cat adoption and rehabilitation programs help us place homeless cats, including those with special needs, in loving homes. We believe that every cat is adoptable; some just need more time than others to find the right match. Our ultimate goal is to place them, but these cats have a loving home in our Arlington sanctuary for as long as they need us. The sanctuary is currently home to cats positive for FIV and Feline Leukemia, feral cats, senior (though we prefer to call them vintage ) cats and cats with chronic illnesses.

Our Prevention Programs In addition to finding homes for homeless cats and kittens, we help prevent cat homelessness by providing free spay and neuter vouchers and a pet food bank for low-income cat owners in our community. Our goal is to provide the support they need so they won't be forced to give up their beloved pets because of temporary financial hardship. We also provide resources for cat owners who are struggling with behavioral challenges.

Meet our New Executive Director Kathleen Olson, CAWA Purrfect Pals welcomed Kathleen Olson, CAWA, our new Executive Director, in December 2017. Kathleen has 18 years of experience in animal welfare, most recently serving as Executive Director for the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County for 10 years. Kathleen is a certified animal welfare administrator, a member of the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators and a member of the Board of the Directors of the Washington State Federation of Animal Care and Control Agencies. She has also conducted organizational assessments for animal shelters in Burien and Olympia as a consultant.

Our Leadership Staff Executive Director Kathleen Olson, CAWA Director of Community Engagement Connie Gabelein Operations Director MJ Zelinka, LVT Lead Shelter Veterinarian Dr. Leslie Kasper Volunteer & HR Manager Carol Lamar Adoption Program Manager Elizabeth Asher Foster Care & Shelter Relocation Manager Susan Bark Cat Care Manager Brandy Unruh Finance Manager Kelsey Kohlwes, CPB

Our Community's Needs are Changing. Free and low-cost spay and neuter efforts have dramatically reduced the number of healthy, adoptable cats in Washington State shelters. Cats and kittens with special medical and behavioral needs are still at risk, however, and they remain our highest priority at Purrfect Pals. In 2016 and 2017, we temporarily reduced the number of cats we took in so we could redesign and expand our shelter and sanctuary to better accommodate the cats who need us most.

In June 2017, we completed our $1.4M shelter expansion construction project which will significantly increase the number of cats with special needs we can save each year.

Our brand new 4,000 square foot building houses several new cat rooms (most with catios), a reception area, adoption center, caretaker's studio and office space. This new cage-free space was designed with special needs cats in mind and makes enrichment a priority. It will allow us to care for up to 100 more cats and kittens at a time and keep them even healthier and happier.

Developed by Jackson Galaxy and a team of animal behavior experts, Cat Pawsitive Pro is a mojoenhancing, positive-reinforcement clicker training initiative that enriches day-to-day life for cats in shelters, builds new skills for cats as well as shelter staff and volunteers, promotes the human-cat bond, and helps improve adoptability. We can t wait to get started!

FOUR PAWS UP FOR PURRFECT PALS! In October 2017, Purrfect Pals was rated for the first time by America s largest independent charity evaluator: Charity Navigator.
