The Christmas party was fun and a good time was had by all lots of good food, some old friends and guests and great company. Craig and Maggie Green, Mary Mosely, Chris Covie, Meredith Gibbs were able to join us. Of course we had to have resident Basset Hounds mingling, howling, baying and stealing food on and off the whole time, but we ARE after all a Basset Hound club. There were some very cool gift items, mostly Bassety, given and received at the gift exchange. Thanks to Timberline BHC for providing the delicious honey baked ham as main dish. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday and wishing you much happiness and success in 2012! The nominating committee (Underhill, Pearce, Makowski) have met by email in January and will be presenting a slate of officers and board members to the TBHC board of directors. Combined TD/ TDX Tracking Test, March 4, Chatfield Member and Basset Hound Supporter Help Welcome and Needed! Our first Annual Combined Tracking Event is scheduled and the Premium is posted on our website http://www/basset-tbhc.org. As always, we welcome volunteers for helping on various levels, some skilled, some easily taught on test weekend. We plot tracks on Saturday and run the test on Sunday. This is an outdoor event in all weather conditions. Betty Gene is Secretary/ chairman, and I will be helping her with the Chair duties of scheduling test crew. So if anybody has both days free, or one specific day available, please contact me and I will welcome all volunteers and find an appropriate job for you. We can use: Hospitality, Flag Carriers, Drivers, Photographer, and Track Layers of all levels. And if you cannot help but want to learn more about tracking, we do welcome you to come out and watch and join in the lunch afterwards. If you do wish to just watch and learn Saturday, we have two capable Chief Track Layers in Craig Green and David Kingsmill, who could discuss this process with you as they do their jobs Saturday of compiling track order and map locations in the park. For Sunday, we hope to have an exhibitor driver that can shuttle observers to parking areas to view teams working tracks. TD tracks are run first, with the Advanced TDX running after that. Draw times, and other pertinent test details, are included in the Premium list. Please contact me if you can help, OR want to learn more and wish to come out for a specific learning opportunity. We hope to see you there. Jane Jonas 970-672-0806 janejonas46@gmail.com

January 15, meeting February meeting TBHC Combined Tracking Test TBHC annual meeting TBHC Specialty 2012 May meeting UPCOMING EVENTS Cindy Underhill s home 1 p.m., Sunday Betty Gene s home, date TBD Sunday, March 4, 2012 Chatfield State Park March, 2012 date and location TBD April 13, Friday, Adams County Fairgrounds Witherbee s home in Elizabeth 2012 Specialty Update Our Best of Breed challenge trophy is back from the silversmith and looks fantastic just like new! Members got to see it in person at the Christmas meeting. Instead of shipping, Nance s will be bringing 2 of the challenge trophies to us at Plum Creek Kennel Club in February so we ll have a little time to get them engraved. All plans are moving along right on schedule. Cindy had a box of TBHC items in storage, some of which can be used for smaller trophies and gifts. That will be helpful. An ad has been placed in Tally Ho advertising our specialty. The luncheon will be on site catered by Xquisite Taste (Donna Marzulli) just as last year but inside the ring area. Karla has hospitality plans well under control. Don t forget to start gathering donations to the raffle and contacting Cindy. Hope many of you can come. This should really be a fun year and we re hoping for a great entry. More news to come.... ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A HOUND NEWLY APPROVED BY THE AKC YES, THIS IS A HOUND! The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, a primitive breed, is known for its small size, erect ears, wedge shaped head, and two coat types, smooth and wire. It hunts by sight, scent and hearing, and is related to the Pharaoh Hound, Ibizan Hound, Cirneco dell'etna and Basenji. The smooth coat is short and very dense, while the wire coat (rough) is long and harsh, with a bearded muzzle. Preferred coat color is yellow or fawn, with or without white markings. A Look Back The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, a National Dog of Portugal, is derived from the ancient hounds that came to the Iberian Peninsula with the Phoenician traders from the area of Asia Minor around 1,000 BC. This rustic breed was developed to hunt the harsh terrain of Portugal and penetrate the thickets to gain access to its prey, which was typically rabbits. The first Portuguese Podengo Pequeno came to the United States in the 1990's.

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It s the best deal man has ever made........... M. Acklam You can say any foolish thing to a dog and the dog will give you a look that says, My God, you re right! I never would ve thought of that!.............. BLOAT Facts All Basset Hound Owners Should Know The technical name is Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) and it is prevalent in deep chested breeds, like the Basset Hound. It is the second leading killer in dogs next to cancer. It is life threatening, comes on quickly, and requires immediate veterinary treatment, often emergency surgery, to save the hound. Call ahead and let them know you are bringing in a bloat case so they can be fully ready when you arrive. What is it? Bloating of the stomach is often related to swallowed air (although food and fluid can also be present). It usually happens when there's an abnormal accumulation of air, fluid, and/or foam in the stomach ("gastric dilatation"). Stress can be a contributing factor also. Bloat can occur with or without "volvulus" (twisting). As the stomach swells, it may rotate 90 to 360, twisting between its fixed attachments at the esophagus (food tube) and at the duodenum (the upper intestine). The twisting stomach traps air, food, and water in the stomach. The bloated stomach obstructs veins in the abdomen, leading to low blood pressure, shock, and damage to internal organs. The combined effect can quickly kill a dog. Symptoms: If you even suspect your Basset may be bloating - get to an emergency vet immediately Attempts to vomit (usually unsuccessful); may occur every 5-20 minutes (One of the most common symptoms) Doesn't act like usual self (Perhaps the earliest warning sign & may be the only sign that almost always occurs) Significant anxiety and restlessness (One of the earliest warning signs and seems fairly typical) " Hunched up" or "roached up" appearance (This seems to occur fairly frequently) Bloated abdomen that may feel tight (like a drum) (Despite the term "bloat," many times this symptom never occurs or is not apparent) Pale or off-color gums (Dark red in early stages, white or blue in later stages) Lack of normal gurgling and digestive sounds in the tummy (Many dog owners report this after putting their ear to their dog's tummy) Other signs: Gagging Heavy salivating or drooling Foamy mucous around the lips, or vomiting foamy mucous Whining Pacing Licking the air Seeking a hiding place Looking at their side or other evidence of abdominal pain or discomfort May refuse to lie down May attempt to eat small stones and twigs Drinking excessively Heavy or rapid panting Shallow breathing Cold mouth membranes Apparent weakness; unable to stand or has a spread-legged stance Especially in advanced stage Accelerated heartbeat Heart rate increases as bloating progresses Weak pulse Collapse

Basset Hound Meet the Breeds at National Western Below is the Meet the Breeds schedule for February 12 at the National Western. They ve once again put Basset Hounds on Friday, but we are on the main floor, mid-day rather than downstairs which is definitely a plus. If any of you can bring a Basset and spend an hour, or part of an hour, meeting and greeting the public and distributing information on our breed and our club, please contact Carol at bristleconebassets@yahoo.com. We do have a nice display and some hand out material. These Denver shows have lots of visibility with the public so this is an excellent opportunity to promote the Basset Hound.
