Cavaliers of the South, A CKCSC USA Regional Club The Southern Cavalier 57th Annual CKCSC, USA National Specialty Weekend Georgia On My Mind Summer 2018 The Cavaliers of the South are proud to be hosting the 57th annual CKCSC, USA National Specialty at the beautiful Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain Georgia. This is a truly unique destination with 25,000 acres featuring activities for every member of the family to enjoy. There are two 18-hole golf courses, hiking trails, fishing in one of 13 lakes, a tree top adventure course with zip lines, a birds of prey show, and one of North America s largest tropical butterfly conservatories. Certainly there is something for everyone, dogs included! With average highs of 76 and lows in the 50 s the weather this time of year should be gorgeous. A full weekend of activities is being planned. We will offer a Neonatal Seminar with Karen Cusick, Puppy and Veteran s Sweeps, three days of conformation shows and performance events including a Trick Dog exhibition. Thursday evening will feature the much anticipated Top Twenty Competition and Gala with our mystery judges. The National Banquet and live auction will take place on Saturday evening, Health clinics will also be featured as well as a ringside silent auction and a Parade of Veterans on Saturday. We are also very excited to offer an International Symposium with a Q&A type panel discussion with several SURPRISE international breeders. We are honored to welcome our distinguished judges for the National Specialty weekend; Erica Venier (Orchardhill US) judging Puppy & Veteran Sweepstakes; Kristy McMurray (Merryoth UK) judging the Trudy Brown Albrecht Memorial Rally; Brian Rix (Ricksbury UK) judging the National Specialty and Ted Eubank (Pinecrest US) judging the Elizabeth I. Spaulding Memorial Show. A show this size is a monumental undertaking. The four show chairs and every member of the COS Board are hard at work to assure a one of a kind National Show this year. Georgia on My Mind with a little Southern Comfort is our theme and that s exactly what we intend to provide. Come and enjoy the beautiful gardens and fall weather, Southern Comfort Specialty drinks, food, and fun times with friends and cavaliers! The Southern Cavalier Page 2 Letter from the President Small Steps: Big Successes Over the years many of us have been known as the Baby Boomers or the XY Generation. But now we have all become the right now generation. We want everything NOW! We are impatient to communicate our ideas and thoughts to the world through social media, impatient to have what we need now; and, we are impatient for success. Don t get me wrong, it is the natural progression of things as we deal with the new technology that has been developed over the past 20 years. People think that things in our lives should be fast and easy but, I have learned a valuable lesson. Success is seldom the result of one big step or decision; it is the result of multiple small steps and many decisions. This is true in business, personal relationships, sports and many other aspects of our lives. Walt Disney World took years to make and to plan. The Disney dream almost never happened because Walt was turned down for financing 105 times. He struggled to get the permits and permission from the state of Florida and Orlando to make his dream come true. It took support from others like him who believed in his vision and who worked with him for a long time to help him make this happen. It took years of small steps to make his vision a reality. Now the people he worked with and mentored continue to carry out his vision. Look at what patience and hard work can do. Last month, the Florida State Women s Fast Pitch Softball team won the National Championship. They were the first team in history to bring this award home to FSU and the ACC. The win came during the last seven games of the College World Series. What is missed by the casual observer are the countless hours, days and years that every player spent practicing, conditioning and working physically and mentally to getting ready for that big success. The hours of coaching and support from their parents and those who were hired made them the best. The National Championship was the result of many small steps which taken together equaled a big success! It is the same for all of us who breed, show and do performance with our Cavaliers or just want healthy well-adjusted pets. Our dogs do not become champions overnight. We do not breed the perfect dog the first time around. The health of the dogs we own is not improved in one generation and having a loving pet that becomes part of a family takes effort as they learn your rules and your schedule. It takes hard work and dedication to do all of these things. The small steps taken today lead to better Cavaliers in the future. The Cavaliers of the South offers you the support and mentoring needed to accomplish great things with your fourlegged companions. Taking small steps with the members of this wonderful Club can help lead to success with your Cavalier no matter what you are striving to accomplish. You have the best of the best in this Club. People and mentors who have spent their lives with these wonderful Spaniels. Take a step toward success; come to a show, attend a health clinic, sit in on a seminar or learn about Trick Dog titles at the National Show. Just come, and consistently take small steps with our Club. I promise, if you take these small steps you will have big successes. Pat Mixon COS President

The Southern Cavalier Heart of the South 2018 Sharon Utych The Heart of the South award dates back almost as many years as the Cavaliers of the South region has been in existence. The name originates from a quote by our first COS president, Dr. Randi Rosvoll, who said that the COS members were The Heart of the South. Every year the Cavaliers of the South membership have the opportunity to nominate a member that they feel has served our regional club in an extraordinary manner. This list of nominees is then voted on by secret ballot by the Board and the recipient is announced at the AGM in May. This year really is all about the heart of our club. The dictionary defines the noun heart as, the central or innermost part of something. Sharon Utych is just that to the COS. She is one of those volunteers who are found in the inner most workings of our club. Always there working hard behind the scene, quietly creating one of the best regional newsletters in the country, setting up auctions, working for years to maintain our CKCSC, USA National event page. Her passion has been working at each show to make sure our veterans are honored and respected. Doing all this work because she loves her Cavaliers. For many of her volunteer years Sharon and Jim did not even own a dog to show in conformation. Proving to us all, that the heart of the south is really about all the friends we make, the lessons we learn and what an individual can do as a member of this club to improve the legacy of our breed. We have many people who work hard for this club and Sharon is certainly one of those volunteers who deserve recognition. I asked Sharon to tell us a little bit about her dogs and I now realize something new about her, she also has dogs who serve others like their owner. Our first Cavalier is Finn - MBVISS Karvale Brookhaven Finn THDA CGCA C-TCX. He has over 100 hours visiting Alzheimer patients and is a titled therapy dog in AKC and CKCSC. Finn began his show career at age 7 as a veteran. Finn is now 10 and 2018 will be his last year of full showing. He is my heart dog. Our second Cavalier was Skye - Brookhaven Dream Time THDA CGCA C-TCX. He also was a therapy dog clocking in over 100 hours visiting Alzheimer patients and was also a titled therapy dog in AKC and CKCSC. He and Finn were registered with Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Finn & Skye are the backbone of our kennel name: Finnickyskye Cavaliers. Skye was and is still, my soul. He was such an old soul who loved everyone he met. Skye passed away on June 12, 2017 from intestinal lymphoma and I miss him every single day. Our third Cavalier is Stevie - AKC CH Almeara Visionnaire CGC. We co-own him with Linda Whitmire his breeder. Stevie was my 1st "official" show dog. He was proudly owner handled to his AKC championship! Stevie will be four in August and he loves his daddy s lap, meeting and greeting people (and especially children) and is obsessed with playing ball. Our fourth Cavalier is Edgar - CKCSC USA & BISS AKC GCHB CH Brookhaven the Dream Lives On at Finnickyskye. Edgar is from the same sire (CH Pascavale Pancho) as Finn and his dam is a Perry (CH Brookhaven Dream Lover) granddaughter (Perry was Skye's sire). So I have a piece of Finn and Skye in Edgar. We are very proud to say that Edgar is currently the number one owner handled cavalier in the AKC NOHS rankings and the number 29 Cavalier in the USA (AKC rankings) - very proudly owner handled! Miles Leslie Slusher Kim Conley Jamie Seidman McDonnell Sharon Utych Jim Utych Caryna Baker Fox Mimi Hodges Vote to approve minutes from the 2017 AGM. Minutes were submitted to the board via email, published, and hard copies were also distributed at the meeting. No changes were recommended. Motion to approve minutes was made by Brenda Martz and seconded by Polly McCauley. All approved. Old Business: Last year a motion was made to move this show to the third weekend in May. That was approved. We are hoping and praying that we can stay at this hotel on this weekend. Committee Reports President s Report Pat Mixon wants to thank all of the volunteers who make all of these shows work. She welcomes all newcomers and asks them to volunteer as well and get to know people. It has been a tough year or two with hotels but, everything is turning around. We now have some great venues. Williamsburg has been wonderful. Asheville is great. Paula Ayers asks if this year s Doubletree in Atlanta will take us, would everyone want the show at this hotel again. Everyone agrees that it is a great venue. Membership Committee - Pat Mixon Pat Mixon is hoping that this year she can focus on membership and the Media Committee now that the crisis to find hotels has settled down. We signed up four or five new members this weekend just by inviting them to come to the show and meet people. This is a great way for new people to learn about our club. Media Committee - Pat Mixon The Media Committee is going to help us get everything out on social media venues and help us keep these shows alive and keep attendance high. Paula Ayers and Brenda Martz did a great job utilizing social media for this show weekend. Judges Committee - Kevin Cline Kevin Cline, Mimi Hodges, Rachel Venier, Linda Whitmire, and Gwen Wells make up the Judges Committee. We are asking for input from members for names of judges that they would like to see judging. We are always open to receiving new names. The committee loves hearing about new judges. Please keep in mind that we are maintaining a list of judges for a year in advance, so it would be at least a year out before any newly submitted judges would be actively judging. Currently, all judging slots have been committed through 2018 with the exception of two newly released slots. We are hoping to fill those slots with our very own newly appointed COS judges! We have two new judges from the south - Kevin Cline and Mimi Hodges. They just have to be approved at the next national board meeting. National Show - Kevin Cline Show Committee Chairs - Kevin Cline, Pat Mixon, Michelle Lander Hamilton and Pat Lander Page 5

2018 COS AGM Meeting Minutes Summer 2018 Our theme for the weekend is Georgia on My Mind with a sub theme of Southern Comfort. We want to produce a 2018 National Show in true southern style, and we are working full tilt to bring everything to fruition. In order to do this we created a number of sub committees. If you are interested in volunteering for one of these committees, please contact the chair associated with each committee. We d love any and all additions! National Show Committees Transportation Committee - Kevin Cline Performance Committee - Kristine Schmidt Hotel Logistics Coordination - Pat Mixon and Kevin Cline Vendor Committee Kevin Cline, Shannon Taylor, Paula Ayers and Brenda Martz Decorating Committee - Shannon Taylor, Teri Kaiser, Mimi Hodges Welcome Bags Shannon Taylor, Tia Painter, Carolyn Bolster and Mimi Hodges Prize Committee - Shannon Taylor, Linda Whitmire and Michelle Lander Hamilton Grounds Committee - Michelle Lander Hamilton Auction/Fundraising Committee - Pat Mixon and Pat Lander Media/Advertising Committee - Sharon Utych and Jamie Seidman Top 20 - Pat Lander and National Top Twenty Chair Judges Symposium - Pat Lander Health Committee - Kevin Cline and Pat Mixon Food/Banquet/Hospitality - Pat Mixon, Brenda Martz, Paula Ayers The 2018 National Show will be held at the Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain, GA. It s about an hour south of the Atlanta airport. There are lots of activities so it will be a fun event for the entire family to attend. It is in October which is usually great weather in the south. Thursday we will have a whelping/neonatal seminar in the morning. That evening, after everyone receives a true Southern welcome at the Welcome Reception Party, the Puppy and Veteran Sweeps will be held to be followed by the Top 20 Event. In a room adjacent to the Conformation Ring there will be a Performance Ring where the south will have the opportunity to host its first Trick Dog Competition. Everyone will want to take a moment to see this! Friday night there will be a Judges Symposium facilitated by Pat Lander. Saturday night we will have our 2018 National Banquet held in conjunction with the live auction. There will be special artwork created for this show by our very own artist, Teri Kaiser, that will be auctioned off at the banquet as well. We have a great slate of judges for the weekend, and thanks to the symposium, we will have an opportunity to discuss Cavaliers in detail. Paula Ayers mentioned that Vivian McLaughlin will be attending the show and would be a good candidate to add to the symposiums panel. In addition, to the committees listed above, Sandra Brandvold is helping with the Sign up Genius. This will help us organize everyone that wants to sponsor a portion of the show. We have a lot of good volunteers but, this is going to take a village. Please sign up and help us make this amazing. Trophy Committee - Mathew and Amanda Madden They have a brand new book and it is working much better. Thank you for all of the encouragement in revising this plan. Everything was returned and moved so much better. MOST of the trophies were polished and it all went very smoothly. Many trophies have been replaced. They will be auctioning off retired trophies at this show next year. We will advertise these trophies in the Premium and Newsletter next year. Volunteers for those who would like to donate replacement trophies will be taken next year in March. We will be offering first right of refusal to those who won the retired trophies to donate a replacement before the email blast goes out. Matt and Amanda will create and send out a list of requirements for the replacement trophy. Kim Conley states that the Midwest went to a pewter company to minimize the polishing plus they do all of the engraving and can make all of the engravings on the trophies look same. It was a company called Woodberry. Also, we need to make sure the replacement can be engraved as Beth Bales says that some pewter is not. Pat Mixon suggest that we should let our trophy chairs send out an article stating what trophy is retiring and what the future requirements are. Pat Mixon is adding Sharon Utych and Kim Conley to the committee so that this can be discussed further. Both agreed that they would be happy to help. Special Recognition A big thanks to Brenda Martz and Paula Ayers for all the great work they do to make the Atlanta show a success. Thank you to all of our members for coming to the show and for volunteering. This year they had tons of volunteers and everyone has shown up. Paula also sent out a reminder list. This hotel is costing us more money because we don t have the same perks. Paula created a list that has been by the coffee center to recognize everyone who donated things like major prizes, coffee service, food that was served during the Puppy and Veteran sweeps, among many other items. Many people were recognized. There were donations for the decor, the welcome bags items for the auction. All of this is how we cut cost and make these shows work! Thank you again for all of you who volunteered and thank you for participating. We have eight live auction items. This not only keeps the auction moving but also ensures quality auction items. This keeps the auction from becoming too lengthy and still provides substantial reimbursement for show cost. In addition to the dinner and auction tonight, we have music with microphone and speaker for karaoke and thanks to our lovely photographers we will also have a fun photo booth! Treasurer s Report Polly McCauley has a written report for the members at the AGM. The income is down slightly due to the cost for venues and food at the shows. She ask if there are any questions. A motion is made to accept the report by Kevin Cline. It is seconded by Sharon Utych. Motion Approved. Pat Mixon has a small gift to acknowledge how much Polly McCauley has helped the club and to thank her for her service. Elizabeth Gherkin was also such a great deal of help. Polly, thank you for all of your hard work and gift of service. Pat Mixon presents Polly with a gift of appreciation. Page 6

The Southern Cavalier 2018 COS AGM Meeting Minutes Recognitions Pat Mixon takes a moment to present all of her show chairs with gifts. She especially chose these gifts from our fabulous vendors whom we love so much. Many thanks to all of the show chairs who work so hard for us. They are always going the extra mile to keep the show cost down. Pat presents each show chair with a gift to thank them for all of their work and dedication. Helen Norton needs assistance chairing the show in Williamsburg. Please volunteer to assist Helen so that she continues to work with us. Heart of the South This award this year goes to Sharon Utych. Sharon is truly one of our members who puts her heart into everything she does for this club. She has assembled the newsletter for years. It is a tremendous amount of work. She has organized auction after auction. She supports the veterans parade. She did the National events page for years. Sharon has helped with welcome bags for endless number of events. She also sends emails to remind us to stay on top of all that we have to do. She is truly an unsung hero. AGM COS Election Shannon Taylor, the COS secretary, cast a single vote to elect the uncontested slate. The board positions are now filled. Jim Utych is the Cavaliers of the South s new Treasurer and Paula Ayers is our new board member. We would like to welcome you both to the COS team. Juhan Mixon would like to acknowledge our photographers who work tirelessly at our shows. Paula Ayers asks that you share your suggestions for doing anything differently or in addition to what we already have going. If you have any ideas please let us know! Maureen Miles suggests that we all wear name tags. Paula agrees that we could wear them to the banquets. We obviously can t wear them into the show ring, but it would be a good way to meet people and remember names. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Betty O Brian. It was seconded by Amanda Madden. Meeting adjourned at 6:00 PM. Respectfully submitted by COS Secretary, Shannon Taylor Meet Your New COS Board Members The Cavaliers of the South would like to give a big welcome to our two new members of the board elected at the 2018 AGM. James (Jim) Utych has taken over the job of Treasurer and Paula Ayers has joined the board as a Director. We want to thank you both for agreeing to support the club through your leadership in the coming years. Jim Utych Jim lives in Alpharetta GA and works for First Student as a Senior Finance Director. He has a degree in Accounting and has worked also at Unisys Corporation in various accounting and finance management positions in Detroit and Philadelphia. Jim is married and has two adult sons. Stephen is a professor at Boise State University in Idaho and Michael is a contract manager at Infor Corporation in Milton GA. Jim and his wife Sharon (Finnickyskye Cavaliers) became involved in Cavaliers in 2008 when they brought home their beloved boys, Finn & Skye from Brookhaven cavaliers. Jim can be found helping out at club shows as a table steward, working the auction, collecting money and also showing Finn, Stevie and Edgar at AKC and Club shows. Paula Ayers Paula Ayers is no stranger to the leadership roles in the COS. Paula has been a member of the Club since 1995 and has served in several COS Board positions in the past including as the President. She has also served on the National level as a Board member and then Vice President of the CKCSC, USA. Paula and her sister Brenda Martz own and breed lovely Cavaliers under the Brookhaven Affix. Paula is also a CKCSC, Page 7

2018 May COS AGM Show A GREAT Success! Summer 2018 The May Cavaliers of the South annual show started on Thursday morning with everyone scurrying around getting the ring ready for the weekend events. I must say from Thursday morning until Sunday evening I have never seen as many people participate in one of our regional shows. Many of our members donated their time and money to make the Atlanta show successful! With the cost of the hotel, food, travel & accommodations for our judges climbing every year donations from our members made it possible for us to have a wonderful venue, coffee, food, exhibitor bags, door prizes and much more. This year we had door prizes for the first time which were awarded throughout the weekend. I think this was a nice touch and so much fun. Plans are in progress to continue this fun event! We celebrated every night in the hospitality room. This is a time to visit and make new friends. I ve expressed so many times that the show weekends give us time to spend time with our friends old and new and learn from each other. Most nights there are over 100 years of experience in one room. And of course, we enjoy food, drinks and make memories. CMW/COS Summer Specialty Indianapolis Our next show is our summer specialty show in conjunction with Cavaliers of the Midwest. The show dates are July 26-29 at the Wyndham Indianapolis West (Airport). Our COS chairs are Michelle Lander-Hamilton and Shannon Taylor. They need YOUR help to make our show day a success! Mandy Atwood (Clintview UK) will be the judge for our day. We are holding a silent auction and are in need of donations! Please contact Michelle or Shannon if you can donate something for our silent auction. Also, we need VOLUNTEERS for our day! ALL POSITIONS are available! If you can Gate Steward for the morning or afternoon (or entire day), Ring Steward (if you ring steward you cannot show that day), Table Steward & Announcer (Full or half day). Please consider volunteering and let Michelle or Shannon know! York PA & Asheville NC Shows Don t forget to support our upcoming Fall & Winter Specialty shows! York PA is in November and in Conjunction with CNE. Asheville NC is in December and in conjunction with CMW. Both are GREAT venues and Asheville in December is especially a fun holiday time (remember our last tacky sweater party and oh ALL that SNOW?) We will be holding silent auctions also, so if you have an item to donate please contact the appropriate show chair (listed on the events section of the National website calendar). Page 10

The Southern Cavalier Costume Contest at the May Cos show 2018 What does the Pope, an airplane pilot, a wedding party, African safari animals, a bacon and wine lover and Robin Hood have in common? These are the costumed Cavaliers who participated in the second annual Costume Contest presented by the National Membership Committee in conjunction with the Cavaliers of the South. The purpose of this event is to provide a fun venue for all Cavalier owners and to encourage membership in the Ckcsc. Our activities are not all about conformational winning in the show ring. The top winners for creativity were the Air Force pilot shown by Anne Eckersley, followed by African animals presented by Liz Greak and a lovely large British wedding party hosted by Lynnette Bragg. Cindy Koehring graciously donated 3 lovely pieces of her artistic creation for the top 3 prizes. This year, goodie bags were given to all who participated in the contest as well as all in the audience who took time out to cheer on the event. Elaine Mitchell and Barb Magera made and donated the goodie bags which contained a Dr. Noy s toy bear (safe toy without stuffing); Mother Hubbard organic dog biscuits and much needed poo bags. Everyone had a great time. We encourage everyone to support next year s fun event designed to include Companion Cavaliers, new comers and show Cavaliers. Come join the CKCSC fun! Barbara E. Magera MD PharmD MMM is a Cavalier fancier who lives and practices medicine in Charleston, South Carolina. She is Chair of the CKCSC Membership Committee and is a COS member. Page 11
