The Southern Cavalier Letter from COS President Pat Mixon Recently, I asked a friend how she thought I was doing as President of the COS. She said she thought it was going well because everything seemed the same as usual. Well, that struck a chord with me, going the same as usual. I was pleased that things were going smoothly, but is that really where I hoped to be near the end of my second year as President. The same, going smoothly, ok, not bad. Really??? Do we always want to do things just the way we always have? Don t know, not sure, what about that? Should we stay just the same or do we need to make changes? In the dictionary the definition for the noun change is, noun noun: change; plural noun: changes; noun: Change; plural noun: Changes the act or instance of making or becoming different. Is being just the same really good or do we need to show we can change. Many organization and clubs are dealing with this question. Not just CKCSC, USA or COS, but big organizations such as the Girl and Boy Scouts, service clubs like Kiwanis and Rotary. The trend is moving away from joining and being a member of an organization. This trend is documented in the survey below conducted by the American Society of Association Executives Are you currently a member or have you ever been a member of any of the following groups? Currently a member Previously a member Never been a member Union 12% 31% 56% Business/industry association 6% 95 85% Political party 2% 6% 91% Professional sporting clubs (AFL, NRL, etc) 10% 11% 79% Local Sporting clubs 14% 22% 64% Local community organization (Lions, Rotary, etc) 5% 10% 85% Active member of a church 12% 17% 71% School council or parents group 7% 19% 75% Environment group 4% 7% 89% Other voluntary organization 14% 21% 66% In researching this issue for the COS, it appears that the general consensus is that social media is responsible in a large part for the decline in joiners. Why is this the case? Let s look at breed and social clubs. Our club has always been the guardian of the breed and we have held shows and events that have allowed our members to network and get with other Cavalier breeders to discuss pedigrees, health and whelping issues. These events allowed us to see up close and personal some of the top dogs in the US and Europe. We have held health clinics, fundraisers, fun matches and so much more. Ten years ago, this was the only way to connect and get the help and answers as we sought to improve all aspects of the Cavalier breed. This has completely changed with social media and search engines. Not to mention, live streaming and video chats. You can now go to a Cavalier health and breeding Facebook page and get answers from some of the top breeders in the country from the comfort of your sofa. You can go on line and watch real time streaming of national dog shows and see the dogs you are interested in breeding to without ever leaving your home. We can google top veterinary heart specialist near me and have them pick your dog up in their facilities van and whisk it to their satellite office for his check-up. I can know who won what show in England or France with a click of the mouse. This is our competition. What can the COS do to compete? We must look at our current COS membership needs and the new up and coming potential joiner s expectations for our club. Young people google, chat and post! Where do we find them? How do we capture them? How do we make ourselves relevant to new and current members alike? Here are some thoughts: Improve our membership platform and documents Make it easy to join and know your application has been received Provide an immediate response from the president and or board for new members and make them feel welcome Research discounts that may be offered to members for pet insurance, products, coupons and other Cavalier or dog related services Make the club relevant thru social media, Facebook, Snapchat and blogs Host more Veteran events at shows Give us your ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Page 2 This next year my focus as President will be on the image, social presence and public relations for the COS. This should lead to improved benefits for all COS members. The Media Committee chaired by Sharon Utych and Membership Committees chaired by Caryna Baker-Fox will be of great importance to the club and the path we take. We will work with the CKCSC, USA and COS Boards as we move forward in 2018. Please reach out and let us know what you need to make this club more relevant to you. We are a good club, but with your help and input we can be a great club!

Judges Critique Puppy Sweeps Asheville, Dec. 7, 2017 Spring 2018 I appreciate the opportunity to judge your puppies at this year s Asheville Specialty. Thank you to Kristin Jacks and her team and especially to Linda Whitmire for keeping things running smoothly in the ring and at the gate. But most of all thank you to all the owners and their babies for allowing me to go over and enjoy. Judge: Mimi Hodges (Mimric, US) JR PUPPY DOGS (2): 1) Jayba Jean Pierre (Lander/Lander): So much to like about this typey lil Cavalier. A sweet expression, correct ear set and stop and dark eye rims and nose pigment. all catching my eye. Very balanced front and rear. Level topline and correct tail carriage. Still needs to mature in chest but certainly one to watch as he matures. Best Puppy Dog In Sweeps 2) Mysticknight Dog Days of Summer at Crimslee (Brandfold): A handy size ruby boy who also had dark rims and pigment. Good movement coming and going albeit a bit erratic but I imagine this is his first time in the ring. Liked his standing outline, preferred the expression and head on 1. GRADUATE PUPPY DOGS (3): 1) Huntcrest My Guy (Weiner-Pope): Pretty head and dark pigment. Correct silky coat and rich color. Nice thick bone. Would like a little more leg to complete the picture. 2) Foxwyn Look No Further (Fox): Short coupled lad with very pretty round dark eye. 3) Ammik One Particular Harbor (Madden/Mixon): A very happy gay youngster with a graceful neck flowing into nicely angled shoulders. A little longer in the loin and lighter on bone then those above. JR PUPPY BITCHES (5) a class of all Blenheims: 1) Forestcreek Diamond and Silk (Cline): A very promising bitch. Well broken Blenheim with correct straight silky coat. The sweetest of expressions with perfectly set ears framing. Balanced front and rear angles, topline a tad soft while standing on the day. 2) Liberty Bell (Rosenburg/Rosenburg): Adorable small 5 month old with a graceful neck. Balanced front and rear. A tad high in rear on the day, may level as she matures. 3) Jayba Ooh La La (Lander/Lander): A happy girl with a soft sweet expression. Cushy fill of muzzle and short coupled. Not as sure of herself on this go, but could easily trade places with 1 and 2 as she gains confidence. 4) Closeburn Mac Ghille Bank (Fairchild): Nice length of neck and good ear set. Level topline on the move. SENIOR PUPPY BITCHES (2): 1) Chadwick Wish Upon A Star (Eckersley): Wow, this small feminine 9 month tri color bitch could easily compete with much older bitches. Mature for her age, long silky straight coat and very balanced. Wagging happily and moving correct coming and going. Level topline on the move. Good reach and also drive. Happy to award her Best Puppy Bitch and Best Puppy In Sweeps. 2) Manorhouse Isn t She Lovely (Orns/McCaslin): Pretty Blenheim bitch that could use a bit of weight. Pretty round eyes and moderate overall. Dark pigment and long neck, balanced angles front and rear. A little longer in loin. GRADUATE PUPPY BITCHES (1): 1) Partlett Pinky Promise (Williams/Williams): Wow what a sweet head and expression. Very cute! Well broken short coupled Blenheim. Straighter in the front than rear so not as balanced as my choice on the day. Page 10

The Southern Cavalier Judges Critique Lexington KY Fun Match Feb 2018 Thank you to Holly May and Kathy Gentil for organizing a Fun Match in conjunction with the Lexington Specialty. A lovely group of Cavaliers were presented and I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to go over and meet each of them and their handlers/owners. Judge: Mimi Hodges (Mimric US) DOGS JR PUPPY DOG (1): 1) Seraphaven Spellbound (Gogal) A very typey young boy with a spell bounding head, pretty dark round eyes and adorable expression. I can understand how he came by his name. Good bone, nicely broken coat, and a deep rich chestnut red. Great eye rims and nose pigment. Good spring of rib. Very happy and ready to show himself. BEST PUPPY DOG; BEST IN MATCH GRADUATE PUPPY DOG (1): 1) RayLyn s Diamonds Are Forever (Bragg) This boy s large dark eyes and full gorgeous flowing ears caught my attention as he entered the ring. A level top line and a great length of neck are his assets. He was a bit erratic tonight and his gait hard to assess but settled into himself as the weekend progressed. I would like to see quite a bit more weight on him and more spring of rib. A nice exhibit who has a bright future ahead. RESERVE WINNERS DOG VETERAN DOG (1): 1) Karvale Brookhaven Finn C-CTX (Utych) I have judged this happy Cavalier multiple times and each time it is a joy. Large dark eyes that melt you. At 10 years young he is still animated and happy in the ring. Short coupled and balanced. Topline a little soft today. BEST VETERAN IN MATCH SPECIAL EXHIBIT DOG (4): 1) Ch Brookhaven the Dream Lives On at Finnicky Skye (Utych/Utych) A small typey cavalier I ve had the privilege of judging before. Correct flat skull, nicely set on ears, the sweetest of expression with beautiful round dark eyes. Nicely balanced front and rear. Correct silky straight coat, clean markings of a rich red. 2) Chadwick Code Black (McCarty, Eckersley) A very handy size, short coupled cobby tri boy with nice bone. Lovely silky coat. A handsome head with fully cushioned muzzle. A bit erratic on the move. 3) Chadwick Shooting Upwards at Ceilimor (McCarty, Eckersley) Nice length of neck flowing into a level topline and good tail set and carriage. Good bone. Handsome head and enchanting large round eyes. 4) Foxwyn Woodbury Rise And Shine at Ceilimor (McCarty) A balanced typey boy of wonderful size. Very compact and again the eyes had me! BITCHES JR PUPPY BITCH (2): 1) Seraphaven Under My Spell (Gogal) Deepest of red on this young girl. Correctly placed ears. Very happy and showed well for one so young. I liked the rear angulation as well. A deeper stop then I prefer but sweet expression non-theless. 2) Livelyoak Persuasion (Brokopp, Borton. Harrison) This first timer would not walk, not walk, not walk. However at stack I was taken by a lovely neck and level topline. Balanced front and rear. Moderate in every way. Just needs more happy time in the ring and she will blossom. GRADUATE PUPPY BITCH (1): 1) RayLyn s Tiffany Diamond (Bragg) A nicely marked 15 month bitch old of a good size. A pretty moderate head with nice round dark eyes and dark pigment. Balanced front and rear and moved well coming and going and around the ring holding her topline. WINNERS BITCH AND BEST OPPISITE SEX IN FUN MATCH VETERAN BITCH (1): 1) Majestic Ceili Dancer of Avondale at Ceilimor (McCarty) A sweet 10 year old tri with a cushy face. Great rear angles just not able to hold topline at her age. Page 11

Judges Critique COS Fun Match Beaufort SC March 4, 2018 Spring 2018 A sincere thank you to Pam and David Taub for inviting me to judge the match at their annual Pawty On the Point. Hosted at their beautiful home in Beaufort SC, the great weather, good food, sweet Cavaliers and comradery made it a special day and assignment. Judge: Mimi Hodges (Mimric US) DOGS JR PUPPY DOG (1): 1) Brookhaven Forever Young (Bolster, Ayers) A puppy with a very handsome face. Clean and with a moderate stop, pretty round dark eyes and sweet expression. Nice bone for age. He moved well, coming and going and held his topline on the move. I predict a bright future for this lad. BEST PUPPY IN MATCH, WINNERS DOG, BEST IN MATCH BRED BY EXHIBITOR DOG (1): 1) Redthea Extreme Moose Tracks (Thaeder) Correct proportions on this nicely broken Blenheim boy. A cute face with lots of cushion. A deep stop and shorter nose lessen the softness I prefer. Good rear angulation. Not as balanced nor as good a tail set as my Winners. RESERVE WINNERS DOG AMERICAN BRED DOG (1): 1) Preston (Dandridge, Dandridge) Up on size, he needed to move forward and wanted to pace today. Well cushioned muzzle with huge round eyes. Short coupled and balanced. OPEN DOG (1): 1) Excalibur Tom Terrific (Livingston) A likable size on this boy. Compact and handy. Wagged his way around the ring. Sweet face and expression but would prefer more cushion. Not holding his topline today. VETERAN DOG (2): 1) Guinness (Newcome,Newcome) A chubby fellow that held his topline as he gaited around the garden. Tail carried correctly off his back. Long glamorous ears and dark pigment. Nicely cushioned muzzle. VETERAN DOG AND BEST VETERAN IN MATCH 2) Charlie (Reader, Reader) The first thing you see on this lovely old senior are his eyes! Large and round and full of expression. He enjoyed himself and was very connected to his owner/handler. BITCHES SR PUPPY BITCH (3): 1) Kingbridge Sophisticated Lady (Luedke,Waters) Nice shape and profile. Topline and correctly place tail carried off her back as she moved around the ring. Very dark eye rims. Correct movement coming and also going away. RESERVE WINNERS BITCH 2) Lyla Sue (Kernick) Nicely angulated front and rear. Good ear set framing her face. A bit erratic in the ring today but having fun! 3) Kingbridge Lady Isabelle (Luedke,Waters) A ruby of the deepest red. A tad long in the loin. Balanced front and rear, needs more maturity and time. GRADUATE PUPPY BITCH (1): 1) Kingbridge Bebe Girl (Livingston) Balanced front and rear angulation, level topline on the move. Rich black coat with rich tan points. Could use more cushioning. AMERICAN BRED BITCH (1): 1) Chadwick Hynotique Blu (Taub, Eckersley) Moderate overall bitch with pearly white coat. Good rear angulation. Was not showing well on the day and wanted to hang on lead, but her tail wagged as she was at one with her handler. Kept her topline on the side gait. OPEN BITCH (1): 1) Marjorelle Love That Juliette (Conley) 4.5 year old bitch with a level top line and tail carried correctly. Compact, nicely balanced front and rear moving nicely on the go. Very large round eyes. WINNERS BITCH AND BEST OPPOSITE SEX IN MATCH SPECIAL EXHIBIT BITCH (1): 1) Ch Chesham A Minute of Your Time, JW (Taub, Eckersley) A truly beautiful girl of the perfect size and shape. Nine years of age has not slowed her down nor ruin her outline and topline on the move. Large dark eyes and sweetest of expression, she captivates. Balance front and rear it was a joy to go over her. Judges Critique Fun Match March 11 Shreveport LA Spring 2018 Judge: Dr. Kevin Cline Junior Puppy Dog 1 st 001 Georjuli Dragonheart (Glasgow) 7 month old well broken tri with dark rich tan in all the correct places. He is well balanced with exceptional front and rear angulation and has a good shape. He moved fluidly with good drive from the rear. He has grown quickly and is somewhat larger than I like to see at this age, but hopefully will settle into himself as he matures. He has a masculine expression with nice pigment and good eyes. Best Puppy in Match, Best of Opposite in Match. Special Exhibit Dog 1 st 003 Mimric Instagram (Hodges, Perkins) 10 month old nicely shaped, heavily marked, solidly made Blenheim that commanded attention when he entered the ring. I liked his substance and well angulated front and rear. He carries an excellent topline on the move and looks well balanced with a nice profile while standing. He has a pleasing expression, not overdone in any way. He has dark eyes and excellent pigment. This is one to watch. 2 nd 002 Emenkay Dream Lover (Vezina) Another beautiful boy very close up to the class winner. This 18 month old heavily marked tri has an absolutely beautiful head with the softest of expressions, large dark eyes and long full ears that perfectly framed his face. He has a nice topline and moved around the ring with style. Both of these boys are top quality. I just slightly preferred the shape of the 1 st. Special Limit Blenheim Bitch 1 st 004 Beckenhall Rockstar (Orns) This 5 year old well broken Blenheim bitch was full of attitude and really enjoyed her chance to shine amongst the youngsters. She has an attractive cobby shape and small size; a true toy spaniel. She moved around the ring with vigor, showing off her correct front and rear movement. Her top line and tail set are good, though at times she was a bit proud of her tail. Her expression is soft and sweet, with large dark eyes. Proud to award her Best In Match. Page 14
