Melvyn & Marion Fairfax & Liam Meaden From Langport With Jackpot Young Bird Winner Stour Print Guernsey Young Bird & Old Hens Race Eddy & Joyce Kulpa from Reading with Bella Old Hens Winner The Guernsey young bird and old hens was the final race in the Classic s 2015 calendar. Young birds saw 178 members enter 1,471 birds accompanied by 340 old hens sent by 77 members all being liberated at 8.00am in to a North Easterly wind. The Committee would like to congratulate all the winners from all races and thank everyone involved with the Classic who have worked tirelessly this season to ensure everything runs smoothly from the day of marking right through to the liberation and thank all our sponsors whose kind generosity is very much appreciated. Winners of Guernsey Young Bird and 1 st South West Section are Melvyn & Marion Fairfax & Liam Meaden from Langport. First of all we would like to thank the markers at Frome marking station for doing a brilliant job each year. We would also like to thank the convoyers for looking after the birds and doing their all to give us the best possible race. The winning pigeon came with five of our Club birds and gave us a shock when we noticed that he was a Guernsey bird. The dam of this young cock is a full sister to our 2 nd Open 1 st Section hen from BBC Carentan previously this year, which is a Mike Parker pigeon, Elsacker based crossed with a Mick Betts bird. Those two hens were kindly gifted to us as eggs by Aisling Kelway and her father Andy. We have also been lucky to score with the dam including 1 st Club 2 nd Combine from Bedhampton. The sire of this bird is a Gaby Vandenabeele from M & D Evans cross a Hartog pigeon that was kindly gifted to Liam by Bruce Chalmers of Scotland, unfortunately he was lost at Saintes National. In preparation to Guernsey he had two club races (Lyndhurst and Littlehampton). Due to losing the sire, the dam was put in with the young birds, coincidently she paired with her own son so he was sent sitting 10 days on pot eggs. To win this race it was a lovely surprise especially to Melvyn who had won this race in 1992.We were happy to have the 3 out of 4 young birds and 1 out of 2 old hens, with Liam's white grizzle old Jan Aarden based hen from House Of Aarden crossed with a pigeon from Mike Lewis the Lerwick Club secretary, being provisionally 5 th Section old hens.

Jackpot Melvyn, Marion & Liam s Old Hen

2 nd Open 1 st North West Section is Garth & Maxine Wile & Steve Lias from Withywood. We clocked a Blue cock which is a Louella Van hoovke from Masserella. Bred from a cock to win 3 x 1 st Clubs and the dam to win 2 nd Open Tours as a young bird. Our second pigeon is bred from Nigel Templars winning family from Bristol and our own family. We had 3 birds quite close together. Garth Wile & Steve Lias 3 rd Open 2 nd North West Section in both the young birds and old hens races are R E Taylor & Sons of Bristol. The birds are raced by brothers John and Nigel. Their 1 st bird in the young bird race is a blue hen sent sitting 10 day old eggs. She previously only had one race from Portland but had been sent to several old bird inland races as training although she was only hatched in April from the race team and was not on any darkness system. A late bred yearling hen beat the young bird winner by 35 seconds. Sent being driven by her cock, she had previously only been raced 60 miles. She is also the mother of the brother s 2 nd BICC Open YB Guernsey on the same day and is a sister to 2 nd CSCFC Messac last year.

John & Nigel Taylor 4 th & 5 th Open is Mr & Mrs Dean Peart from Gloucester. We flew pigeons for 20 years then had a ten year break and restarted 3 seasons ago This is our first Classic race since being back. First bird blue bar hen sat eggs and was bred from John Soderlund x Add van Barkle van Loon. This pair have bred some good birds, a brother won 1 st Club 2 nd Combine 3,249 birds 34 th Combine 4,550 birds. A sister won 12 th Open RPRA One Loft Final Race 2013. Our second bird is a chquer hen also sat eggs bred from John Whitaker Bramley Lofts. We have had great success with Johns birds winning 1 st Combine 4,550 birds this year. Thanks John Dean & Tracy Peart

In 6 th Open we have Gwyn & Joy Lloyd from Hereford. Joy & I would like to thank the marking team at Gloucester and the Convoyers. Our birds returned in excellent condition. We had 6 out of 10 birds by club clocks at 14:00 hrs. Our first bird was a Busschaert x Deweerdt shaley chequer cock sitting 14 day eggs. This was his 5 th race, having had the four previous weeks races to 80 miles. We started the season with 36 and still have 32 young birds's. Gwyn & Joy Lloyd 1 st North East Section is Eamon Kelly (Lloyd & Kelly) from Steventon. Firstly, I would like to congratulate the winners, especially my good friend Gordon Seeney for timing 9 out of 10 birds and probably having 5 in the top ten of the Section. I am pleased to see Gordon s back off his holidays! My Section winner is a Michael Van Lint pigeon bred by Dean Pallatt. I have had Michael Van Lint young birds from Dean the last four seasons and have won at least one Section each season with these birds. She was sent sitting 4-5 day eggs and returned in excellent condition. I sent 4 and clocked 4 a brilliant race. It was a nice surprise as with the East in the wind I did not expect to win the Section.

Eamon & Jamie-Rae Kelly 1 st & 2 nd South East Section is Johnny Attrill from Salisbury. Congratulations to all at the CSCFC for a good race and to all the winners. My 1 st & 2 nd Section are a nest pair bred by myself Bosua x Van Osh. The sire being a full brother to Nightmare and Crammond & Langstaff s 5 th & 7 th Open National winners. The dam of the nest pair is herself a Section winner, she is a Van Osh. It has been a quiet year having retired Nightmare and four other top cocks, also I have lost some good four & five year old s training not racing. I have replenished the empty nest boxes with I hope a decent crop of yearlings for next year.

Johnny, Kacey Leigh & Jay Henry Attrill 2 nd & 3 rd North East Section is Gordon Seeney from Harwell. The two pigeons timed within 20 seconds of each other were nest mates bred down from Brian Clayburns Soontjens. I had fantastic returns from the race with seven arrivals out of the ten sent within fifteen minutes. They are all home now apart from my breeder buyer pigeon. A good weekend all round as I had the first four birds in the Club race from Yeovil as well. Gordon Seeney and Grandson Chris

2 nd South West Section is Derek Vincent from Axminster. The sire of my pigeon is bred down from M & D Evans x Alan Atkinsons number 1 pair. This pair has bred 1 st & 2 nd Open BBC Carentan 2012. Also 1 st & 2 nd Littlehampton with WOESRC 2010. The dam is daughter of my Jim Smith FVMW gay pied cock, winner of 1 st Club 4 th Combine Carentan WOESRC 2010 2,758 birds. He has been trained having 3 x Poole 42 miles with the D/C & WSC Flying Club. Derek Vincent Barrie Smith from Sparsholt, Winchester is Runner Up to Johnny in the South East Section. My blue pied hen is from my Busschaert family who always do well on hard days. Her half sister was 4 th Open two weeks ago in the Dorset Open race from Guernsey which was also a hard race, so I think I must like the Guernsey race point. Barrie Smith

Old Hens 1 st Open 1 st North East Section Joyce and Eddy Kulpa of Reading clocked their 6 year old De Hough x De Klak hen to win 1 st Open CSCFC old hens. Over the years this hen has put in some good performances, she s a multiple Club winner and regular scorer of Fed positions. This year she won the Club from Le Mans and was 36 th section E, 55 th Open NFC Saintes. The Sire of this hen is from the De Hough family of pigeons that were brought to the UK by Brian Keegan. The dam was a daughter of S & P Kulpa s Champion 50 winner of 13 x 1 st prizes. Full brothers and sisters to this hen have also won. She is closely related to Steve & Paul s 2 nd Open CSCFC Guernsey old birds this year. Eddy had pigeons when he was a young lad back in Poland. When Steve our son started getting interested in pigeons he encouraged him and offered to build him a loft in the back garden. When Steve got married and left home, he took most of the pigeons with him and said he would leave a few for us to fly. We decided that we would join the local Club and race, we started racing competitively in 1978. It is only a small club with 9 members but a good friendly club with very good flyers. We race the full inland and channel program with birds from S & P Kulpa, the main families being De Klaks, Van Loon and Hereman Ceusters. This year we have won 14 x 1 st prizes in the club and 2 x 1 st in the Berkshire Federation. All the birds are fed on Versele Laga corn and given Aviform products in the water. Eddy & Joyce Kulpa 1 st North West Section 2 nd Open is Mr & Mrs Robert & Wendy Hill & Daughter Rhiannon from Bristol. Firstly, we'd like to congratulate Mr and Mrs Kulpa on their win. Theirs was a good

pigeon in an east wind, well done. The first hen we clocked is a yearling, flying naturally on an open loft and sitting 9 day old eggs. She is bred down from pigeons we bought directly from M & D Evans in 2009, Jester 320 X Lady Bliksem lines, and this is her first win. This is the first year we have entered the Old Hens classic. The main reason we entered this race was to give our 5 yearling hens some experience flying over the English Channel after going the whole season down to the coast with the Bristol Fed (they have had no additional training in the four weeks leading up to this race). In the past we've lost a lot of yearlings when entering them in channel races early in the season, due we think to, lack of experience. We had all 5 back all in reasonable time, and although they were a bit tired, all were in good condition, so thanks to the convoyer for looking after them so well. We'd like to finish by saying thanks to Joe Raeburn for all the advice he's given to us, our channel racing has been much improved. Robert & Wendy Hill 2 nd North West Section is John & Nigel Taylor from Bristol (R E Taylor & Sons). Please see young bird report for details. 2 nd North East Section is Barry Sherman & Steve Wells from Oxford. Barry & Steve have been racing in partnership for about 10 years now flying with the Shotover & District Club in Oxford. The pigeon they timed is a widowhood Drapa x Koopman yearling chequer hen who wasn t raced during the old bird season but was paired up and trained specifically for the old hens races. She was sent sitting eggs. The partnership had 5 out of their 7 entered on the Saturday and 1 the following morning.

Steve Wells 1 st South West Section is Terry Vincent from Dorchester. It was extra special for me as I had Klara my 8 year old granddaughter from Germany staying with us. She was sat with me waiting patiently for the birds to arrive, with the wind in the direction it was I expecting the birds home 9.30 to 10.00. I said to her tell me if she spotted any of my pigeons, after many false wood pigeon calls she spotted the hen approaching, very loudly and excitedly shouted "quick opa (German for grandad) you have a pigeon coming. I looked up just as it dropped down onto the loft, being a dark pied hen it was very easy to spot. The hen was from a pair of Jan Aarden (late bred). It was the birds first race as could never seem to be able too get it right. I would like to say thanks to all members of the Weymouth Homing Society as this season has been very tough on old and young birds. To all members of the Weydor Specialist Club I enjoy the social side very much. I must say thanks to Diddy (my mate) for taking the birds to the marking stations and doing the ETS. Last of all to my "old friend " Brian Freeman who won this Section last year to make sure he gives the trophy an extra polish. Not forgetting my wife Linda who helps me with the training tosses.

Terry Vincent & Granddaughter Klara 2 nd South West Section is Brian Freeman & Jason Peach from Abbotsbury. I timed a yearling hen just behind my good friend Terry Vincent. This hen has had a few races and is always first back to the loft. I was hoping to retain the 1 st Section title after winning it last year but Terry pipped me to the post. Unfortunately the hen that did win last year was being prepared to return but a sparrowhawk took her. In one week I lost 5 pigeons and 2 doves. Thank you to Jason for training the birds.

Brian Freeman 1 st South East Section is Ted Harris from Portsmouth. The bird is now named 'Jessies Joy' after my granddaughter and wife. This is the first time I have won the Section in the Classic, since restarting pigeon racing 3 seasons ago. I am thrilled to bits. The bird's breed is Delbar and was bred for me by my friend Kenny Smith of Paulsgrove, Portsmouth. A big thank you must go to my buddy Richard Thomas, without his training help this wouldn't have happened. Ted Harris & Granddaughter Jessie

2 nd South East Section is Melvyn Bird from Andover. I timed a yearling blue hen bred down from my German George blood lines. She was previously 1 st Grately Club Messac with the Wiltshire Fed. She wasn t sent paired up but was being chased about by the youngster I also timed first from this race. Convoyers Report. Friday 21st August. We arrived on site at 07.30 on the Friday morning, once in position the birds were watered and left to settle. Feeding commenced at 2.00 pm and left in front of them for one hour to give the birds that hadnever been fed in race crates a chance to feed, with the water renewed I made the call back to the mainland to Clive Merrills our race controller/weather advisor for this race telling me that everything looked good for the next day but he did have concerns that there may be some early morning sea mist about. Saturday 22nd August. Up at 6.00am just as the sun was coming up clear skies overhead but a big bank of mist to the south. I made a call to Clive at 6.45am confirming his concerns about the mist but with the sun climbing in the sky the mist was burning off, the wind was N E wind onsite and through the channel, all indications were that the clear skies were right through to the mainland but cloud and some rain was forecast later in the west country and up into Wales. At 7.00 Albert arrived with the Guernsey airport weather report for the channel also confirming that there were some banks of sea mist but they were burning off quickly. With the BICC on site and having the longest fliers they always had the option to liberate first, I decided to wait half an hour between liberations and had them away at 08.00am, by the time all the crates were checked the birds could just be seen to the north clearing immediately. Finally my thanks to all concerned with the running of this race, Clive and Albert for their weather forecasting, the lads on the island and of course Clare for making it all happen. Nigel Rigiani.
