SSFCRC Newsletter Page 4 Newsletter need information, brags, stories; deadline for next newsletter is after the Supported Entry; need to add notification on FB page and email list Performance Tracking seminar, presented by Ron and Luci Seeley, is Saturday, February 24 at Colt Creek State Park in Lakeland. Attendees are mostly SSFCRC members, with some non-members. Ways & Means Susan is still working with Queensboro, the existing company, but the URL changes cause problems on our website. All the Emergency Information tubes were sold which brought SSFCRC a profit of $61.48. She is looking at additional opportunities for customizable merchandise. Old Business Meet the Breeds booth Jeff has agreed to continue but needs LOTS of help for 2018. Everyone in the club will need to step up and help. New Business Jeff Speicher made a motion to stop paying DOCOF dues as the club has not fielded a team in several years. The motion carried. Title Rosettes Mary Smith read out the names and new titles of dogs that earned new titles in 2017 and whose owners requested a donation to the FCRSA Foundation in lieu of an annual award rosette; dogs were then recognized that earned titles in 2017 and received an annual award rosette. There was a dazzling array of titles earned by SSFCRC dogs in 2017. Annual Election of New Officers/Board 2018 is an election year, the nominating committee Robin Aronoff, Katy Postrozny, Donna Post, Wendy Jones - put forward the names listed below. SSFCRC Newsletter Page 6 SSFCRC TRACKING SEMINAR FEBRUARY 24 2018 At 8am on Saturday February 24, a group of tracking enthusiasts and interested newbies gathered at Colt Creek State Park. We assembled for a day of instruction and practical introduction to the sport of tracking, led by Luci and Ron Seeley. The Seeleys are long-time trackers with their Golden Retrievers and both judge at all levels of tracking test, as well as being obedience judges. They also are members and supporters of our local tracking club, the Tracking Club of Central Florida (www.tcocf.net), of which Luci is the current President and Ron the Secretary. Our group consisted of nine dog and handler teams: eight Flat-Coated retrievers and one Viszla. Most were local to Central Florida, but one Flat-coat and her owner travelled all the way from Savannah! The day started in one of the park s screened pavilions with an explanation of the sport of tracking, especially the difference between tracking and virtually every other dog sport. The Seeleys described how the dog is the leader in tracking, making it a great confidence-builder for dogs and a wonderful way to develop the bond between handler and dog. Tracking is a non-competitive sport: there is no winner, but only those that qualify or do not qualify in a test. Thus, there is tremendous camaraderie in the sport: everyone present at a test is rooting for every dog to qualify. The various levels of tracking test were described: Tracking Dog and Tracking Dog Urban (TD and TDU), Tracking Dog Excellent (TDX), and Variable Surface Tracking (VST). Qualifying at all three levels results in the Champion Tracker (CT) title: a rare and coveted achievement. One of the many subjects covered in this initial didactic session was the fact that we do not understand what it is that the dogs are tracking, although there are many ideas. The scent of skin cells that we constantly shed is one of the most favored theories. Track-laying is key to the sport of tracking. Luci and Ron described some of the principles of tracklaying and encouraged us to come out both to watch a test and also to come to the set-up day of plotting tracks, the day before every test. Handlers then walked the line, a marked straight line of 100 yards, to determine each individual s stride length, an essential piece of knowledge for track-laying. Then it was out to the field to give the dogs a chance to get in on the action. Each handler laid a short straight track for her dog, while showing the dog the leather glove that she was laying at the end of the track. The purpose was to get the dogs interested and excited to go to find it. Either Luci or Ron held the dog at the start of the track, then the handler ran the dog on the track, using a non restrictive harness and long line, but only from about 10-12 feet behind the dog. The finding of the glove by the dog was celebrated with huge excitement, in order to develop the dog s desire and reward. The process was repeated immediately for each dog, doubling the length of the track. Each dog s tracks were unique, and every glove was unique, scented by the handler who laid the track. Without exception, dogs were enthusiastic about the process of tracking. Some had had a little tracking experience previously, but most had not. Watching their developing understanding and eagerness, it was easy to see that any of them could become skilled tracking dogs. Then a lunch break under a shaded open pavilion, with a view of one of Colt Creek State Park s lakes. One of the biggest revelations of the day was the park itself. Lying just to the north of Lakeland, it consists of over 5,000 acres of natural habitat filled with native wildlife, with sites for camping, fishing, and 15 miles of trails for walking, biking, and horseback riding. It is a beautiful park and the rangers were friendly and helpful. As we were training several passers-by stopped to ask questions about the dogs and the activity. More information can be found at https://www.floridastateparks.org/park/colt- Creek.

SSFCRC Newsletter Page 7 After lunch, we returned to our activities in the field, lengthening the tracks and starting to age them very slightly. Several dogs already were able to follow tracks around 100 yards long. It is to be hoped that we all continue our efforts and get our dogs out tracking. It was a great day, with wonderful instructors and terrific dogs. If any reader has questions about tracking, please email me at the address below.
