SHOW NEWS PEG VOHR Mel Showing at the Heritage Trail Keeshond Club Specialty, Doris Meadowcroft s Ch Darcroft Coca Cola Cowboy (Mel) won an Award of Merit at the morning show & Select Dog at the afternoon show. His daughter Darcroft Legend of Grinder's Switch (Minnie) won Reserve Winners Bitch from the 9-12 puppy class at the morning show. A special thanks to Michael Work for the expert care and handling of my dogs. They make a great team. Minnie From Gail Kenny: After being part of "the crowd@ for the Club=s CGC test on June 18 th, I decided to attempt the test myself with my Belgian Sheepdog, Te a (Witch Hollow Blackthorn IS Tea for Two). She managed to stay calm while I left the room, which was what I was most concerned about, and passed the test! Laurie LaValley and Lori Carver just returned from the UKC Premier show in Kalamazoo, MI. Lori writes, AWe had a great time! My new Field Spaniel puppy, Baron, took Best of Breed from the classes on Friday to finish his Championship. Spirit was Best of Breed on Saturday and Sunday. Blue, the Sussex, was Best of Breed everyday and finished the weekend with a group 4. Brinkley, the Newf, was Best of Breed on Saturday and Sunday. This was his retirement weekend, so it was really exciting to finish up with a Group 4 on Sunday! Laurie's Portuguese Podengo, Laeris, picked up Best of Breed on Saturday & Sunday.@ On June 23 at the Hudson Valley Cluster, Jason Mazzone s Shetland Sheepdog bitch Cameo Farms Blues After Hours (Jazz) won the breed to finish her championship. Moved up the next two days, she won BOS. Lynn Baker s Leonberger, Leos by the sea Brigadier General (Brig), earned his CGC/TDI on June 6, 2016. Lynn says she is very proud of him. It was a tough test for some with 5 dogs testing in a 16X20 room. He was a prince. Kelly Nevin Lovley s Greater Swiss Mountain puppy, Helix (Seneca s Ivy Incident at Prism), daughter of her Swedish import, Fender, was WB, BOS in Hamilton, Ohio on Memorial Day weekend on Saturday and Sunday for 5 and 4 pt respectively. Kelly has never had a 6-9 puppy get points, never mind a major. From Darci Brown: It is now CH Tallywood Enchantment. My Collie, Pagan, finished June 26 th, in Cumberland, ME. Meanwhile, my Smooth Fox Terrier GCH Happy Hour Anything Goes had a great June: 9 Breeds, 2 Group 4's, 1 Group 3, 1 Group 2 and a Specialty BOS. Girls just want to have fun! Lucy And from the Stonebull Bullmastiffs and Jackie Smith: Lucy is now B GCH StoneBull s Lucretia McNight. She finished with a bang taking BOS at Ladies Dog Club on June 4 th in Wrentham and BOB at Ladies Dog Club on June 5 th B BOB over 2 males specials! Both days she was handled by Robin MacFarlane. Lucy is owned by Jackie Smith and Frances McEvoy. She is now retired from breed and on to her agility career, handled by Jackie=s husband, Steve Krulish. And, Neala (PACH C-ATCH2 Bull s Stones Throw Away Eh, MXP4, MJP4, MFP) got her first two legs for Rally Advanced at the Green Mountain Dog Club Rally Trials on June 11 th in Rutland, VTB with 1 st place and a score of 99. At the second trial on the same day, Neala earned a 2 nd place with a score of 94. She is just one trial short of her Rally Advanced title. Neala also -3-

tested for her CGC title at our test on June 18 th, which she passed easilyb her tail wagging at full speed the entire time. It is worth pointing out that Neala now has two Grand Champion offspring B Lucy and Oryn. Neala is a wonder bitch, who seems to do it all. From Dorianne Almann: Taika Jib (Zebi's Some Kind of Wonderful) had a good spring. On May 14, Taika earned a VP-3 from Judge Helmut Weiler, ADRK Germany at the 2016 Northeast Regional Sieger Show organized by the Rottweiler Club of Connecticut. On June 4 at a Performance Scent Dog trial at Tova Training, Raymond, NH Taika passed her Birch Target Odor Test and earned a leg each in Buildings and Taika Exteriors. On June 19 at the North East Stockdog Association Herding Instinct Tests on the beautiful grounds of Starshine Farm, Lebanon, CT, Taika earned her Herding Tested. Gerard Baudet, who judged the morning's test noted, "Very powerful dog. Will do very well." Colleen Cody who judged the afternoon's tests commented, "Super dog!! Plenty of interest! Needs calm work to learn the rules." Not to be left out, on June 11 th, Dorianne=s older dog, Jib, also brought home the bling. At Tova Training=s Barn Hunt Association, LLC Trial under Judge Shirley Hutchins, Jib got his RATI! His beautiful indication of the tube with the rat earned accolades B thanks to the terrier in him! Just a quick report from Karen Duprat and the MeadowView Gang and their road trip. In May we headed out to Marietta, Ohio, where GCHS CH Yup's Life Is A Mystery (Sherlock) and I were able to pick up 4 Best Owner Handled in Breed, A Group 1, and Two Group 3's. MeadowView's Girls Chase Boys, Chase Girls (Flirt) was along for the trip while we try to build up her confidence in the show ring. But she did a great job going Best In Match, with a large amount of competition. Then we moved on to the New Castle, PA cluster, over Memorial Day Weekend where Sherlock picked up 2 GCH Select Placements, and under respected Judge Dana Cline Sherlock completed the requirements for his GCH Silver, a Best Of Opposite Sex, 4 Best Owner Handled In Breed, An OH Grp 1, an OH Grp 2, and an OH Grp 3. Once again Flirt hit the Match ring and won the Breed and the Toy Group, Flirty found no love in the Best In Match ring, but has continued to work on her confidence. The last stop on our 3 week journey ended in Dunkirk, NY, where Sherlock had a clean sweep of the breed ring, 4 Best Owner Handled Best Of Breeds, An OH Grp 2, an OH Grp 3, and A Toy Group 2 under respected Judge Ann Savory Bolus. Excited to post that GCHS CH Yup's Life Is A Mystery is currently the #1 Owner Handled Havanese!!! -4- Sherlock

Training CGC Test The June 18 th CGC Test was, bar none, the best one that PVKC has ever held (or the best one in your Editor s memory). With our own evaluator, Roo Grubis, assisted by Kim Reardon (who is the best assistant ever) and our friendly stranger Lynn Baker with her dog Tanner (who is a wonder dog), we efficiently tested 10 dogs without losing a single beat or team. And the crowd how can I ever thank you Even the weather cooperated and no one died guys enough we had the crowd from heaven. of heat stroke. If you were not part of the crowd you missed a seriously good time. Hopefully, we will see you next year to help out. We had a lovely mix of member and non-member dogs, pure and mixed breeds, old and young. And here are the passing dogs. Agility Grand Champion Recognizing a Lifetime of Excellence The American Kennel Club (AKC7) is pleased to announce a title designed to celebrate the lifetime achievement of dogs that excel across all AKC agility classes B the Agility Grand Champion (AGCH). To earn the AGCH title, the following number of qualifying scores must be earned: - Master Standard & Master Jumper with WeavesB 100 qualifying scores from each class - Master Fast B 75 qualifying scores - Time 2 BeatB 75 qualifying scores - Premier Standard and Premier JWW B 50 qualifying scores from each class Qualifying scores will be grandfathered and may be earned from either the Regular or Preferred classes or a combination of these classes. AThis truly is a lifetime achviement award,@ says Carrie DeYoung, AKC Director of Agility. AWe are looking forward to recognizing each of the teams who have demonstrated this relationship and depth of skill over their agility career.@ The new title becomes effective in July. In addition to a title certificate, a plaque will be awarded to each AGCH recipient. Stay tuned for news of the first dogs to achieve this level of excellence. AKC Canine Health Foundation Awards Three New Grants Through its Tick-Borne Disease Initiative The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to prevent, treat and cure diseases in all dogs, announces the first round of new grants awarded through its Tick-Borne Disease Initiative. AKC News Jason Stull, VMD, PhD, of The Ohio State University will study ALyme Disease in Dogs: Prevalence, Clinical Illness, and Prognosis.@ Lyme disease is a bacterial disease transmitted by tick bites. In people, Lyme is the most common tick-transmitted disease in the US, with over 25,000 cases in 2014. Dogs infected with Lyme -9- disease may not show signs of illness, but underlying impact can be severe. Diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Lyme disease in dogs is complicated by limited research and conflicting professional guidance. Following a large group of dogs from different regions of the United States and Canada, the investigators will broaden the understanding of canine Lyme disease by identifying and defining best practices for prevention and control of Lyme disease in areas with different Lyme risks, ultimately improving the health of dogs and their people. Linda Kidd, DVM, PhD, Western University of Health Sciences, and her team will study AThrombocytopenia and Occult Vector-Borne Disease in Greyhound Dogs: Implications for Clinical Cases and Blood Donors.@ Retired racing Greyhounds are common blood donors for dogs requiring blood transfusions. Low platelet (thrombocytopenia) and white blood cell counts are considered normal findings in Greyhounds, as is protein in their urine. Because vector-borne disease pathogens can cause chronic, clinically silent infection, the researchers hypothesize that infection occurs in, and contributes to blood and urine abnormalities in some healthy-appearing retired racing Greyhounds. This study will compare the prevalence of vector-borne diseases in retired racing Greyhounds and show-bred Greyhounds, and will investigate whether blood and urine abnormalities occur with the same frequency in these two lines of Greyhounds. The results will help veterinarians decide when to pursue infectious disease testing, while also informing best practices for screening canine blood donors. Mary Anna Thrall, DVM, MS of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and her team will investigate AThe Role of Lymphocytes in Canine Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (CME),@ an important tick-borne disease in dogs caused by the pathogen, Ehrlichia canis. In an effort to understand the variable severity of the disease amongst dogs, the team will study the role and types of lymphocytes present in Ehrlichia-positive dogs to determine if increased lymphocyte counts and a large number of genetically identical lymphocytes are associated with disease severity. The findings from this study will help advance the understanding of the pathophysiology and accurate diagnosis of canine ehrlichiosis and lymphocytosis. AThis first round of

funding through the AKC Canine Health Foundation=s Tick-Borne Disease Initiative shows promising research to address important tick-borne diseases affecting dogs, @ said Dr. Diane Brown, CHF chief executive officer. AWe are excited about the impact this Initiative will have on canine health and owner awareness of the growing concern over important tick-borne pathogens.@ Funding for CHF grants comes from a number of sources, including: corporations, dog clubs, and individuals who are committed to the betterment of canine health through scientific research. During 2016, all donations to the Tick-Borne Disease Initiative are being matched dollar-for-dollar by the American Kennel Club (up to $250,000). Make an impact and double your donation today: www.akcchf.org/ticks. Help Protect the Freedom to Own, Exhibit & Breed Our Dogs The Fourth of July is a day when we celebrate our freedom. Some of us will enjoy a three-day weekend at an AKC event. Others will get together with family and friends for picnics and fireworks. And many will take a quiet moment to honor the brave men and women who, for 240 years, have worked and sacrificed to preserve and protect our personal freedoms. Most of us will enjoy Independence Day with our beloved dogs. But sadly, overreaching new laws are rapidly taking away our freedom to own, exhibit, and breed the dogs we love. Each year, an onslaught of restrictive laws are proposed and promoted by big-dollar animal rights activist groups. For example, in 2015 HSUS Ainvested@ $66 million in Aadvocacy and public policy@ initiatives. Animal rights organizations and certain Ahumane@ societies, both national and local in scope, have huge war chests for lobbying and deep pockets to influence the upcoming elections. We don=t. worth it to help protect the future of our dogs, our breeds, and our way of life? Please take a momentcdo it right now before you click to another messagecand donate to the AKC PAC.
