BARKS DECEMBER 2010 Monthly Newsletter of the Glenbard All-Breed Obedience Club The Busy B Girls!! MEMBERS BRAGS Rodsden s Breezy of Windya CDX (Rottweiler) is now also an RAE! Little B completed leg 7 & 8 at the Kenosha Kennel Club on September 11th & 12 th with placing 4 th in Advanced B on the 11 th. Breezy finished her title with the last two legs at the Forest City Dog Training Club on September 25 th & 26 th placing 3 rd in Rally Excellent B on the 25 th. I have promised her (and all the rest of the competitors that were forced to watch for her last performance) that she will NEVER have to Halt-sit, Come Front-sit, Finish-sit ever again as Breezy thinks that whole exercise is BORING and showed the crowd just that!!! On to futility in Utility! Sandi Stephenson was so nice to give me and Bonnie the best birthday gift we ever had! (She turned 9 years old on Oct 2.) Under the guise of looking at photos of one of the new top conformation Rottweilers in a magazine at GABOC, Sandi inserted the article from the Sept/Oct issue Front & Finish- 2009 First & Foremost Rating System. To my utter shock instead of seeing the champion male s name listed as I expected- my Big B - Bonnie Bell V UD RE has been ranked the # 10 Obedience Rottweiler in the Nation for 2009! What an honor for my Novice A dog and what a surprise as we were sad to retire on 7 UDX legs but now this! I shouted so loud I scared the entire club that night human and dog alike- so sorry everyone but it was an incredible moment in our lives! She went on to have a great time Oct 22 nd, 23rd, 24 th at the Medallion Rottweiler Club competing in Veterans earning two second places and a third. The 23 rd was her best day with a great score and she barked all the way to the ring as she couldn t wait to get back to the DOG SHOW! Bonnie has now taken up our own sport of aquatic rally & obedience swimming in heel position with circles and left about turns to keep her figure, go outs, and dumb bell retrieves. She is swimming with me twice a week & loving it with her Newfy friends Groovy and Marlin along with her Auntie Cheri- maybe she just might learn how to rescue someone along with the Boys! Thank You, Joan Mazat Bonnie Bell V UD, RE, CGC, #10 F&F Rott 2009 Rodsdens Breezy of Windya CDX, RAE, CGC

5 TRACKING Glenbard has finished their last two tracking tests of the season. We held our fall VST test on October 3, 2010 at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. We were blessed with two passes that day. The first was a 19 month old Golden Retriever and second, a Belgian Tervuren whose owner was here temporarily from Finland. The Golden was unusually young for a dog to be VST ready but the dog was determined and well trained and certainly possessed the necessary perseverance as outlined in the Tracking Regulations. The handler also exhibited great patience and was well able to read her dog. The Tervuren had the most difficult track of the day and again, patience on the part of the handler and perseverance on the part of the dog carried them through to a pass. I am very proud of Glenbard s tracking program, especially in VST. We are well known for quality tracks and knowledgeable judges. I can t thank our workers enough for making this test flow smoothly and efficiently. John and I judged this test and our test secretary was Mike Schurgot who also laid track. The remaining workers laid track, handled additional hospitality, drove exhibitors, judges and gallery to the tracks and generally made sure everything was covered. They were Marcia Royhl, Donna Eichman, Mike Schurgot, Kelly Smolen, Sylvia Schultz, Candy Heideman, Pat McMahon and Lisa Foltz. The weather held out and I think all in all, everyone had a great time. Our last test of the season was our fall TD/TDX test. I was test secretary and John judged with one of our favorite judges, Nan Cochrane, from River Falls, WI. Despite some personnel mix up, we carried the test off smoothly. Our tracklayers were Mike Schurgot and Carla Wolter for our TDs and Dave Crawford (2), Amy Vose and Sylvia Schultz for the TDXs. Our cross tracklayers were Len Johnson, Kathy Bianchetti and Pat McMahon. We were delighted that one of our own group passed the TD portion and that was Kelly Smolen and her Lab, Archie. Kelly has only been with us about six months but she and Archie were quick learners. The dog was a joy to watch as he breezed through his track and stopped dead on his article. We have all our tests set up for next year and are looking forward to the 2011 tracking season. See our list of dates and judges in the calendar portion of the newsletter. If you plan on tracking all winter, be sure to dress warmly and watch your dogs feet for any ice buildup or salt irritation. Winter can be a good time to check over your tracking equipment, play scent games in the house, work on article indication, take a break, read a good book, do some indoor obedience and wait patiently for the snow to melt and the fun to begin again in the spring. Enjoy the holidays Darlene Barnard

The club hired a consultant to re-do the website and then turnover ongoing maintenance to the club. Our thanks to Dan Behrens, from Nightmare Consulting, for meeting with us and doing the work on our website. There are still some things to finish, the photo galleries, etc, but the majority of the website is complete. Paul Darland has agreed to take over the ongoing maintenance. He can be contacted via e-mail at pdddmd@comcast.net So club members, go check out the updates at: www.gaboc.org WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Liz & Brian Kovich firetiger@theinternetisstupid.com 4837 W. 83 rd St Burbank, IL 60459 MEMORIES Here is a memorial to my final female dobe. She died the end of May. I still miss Liza. She has been gone for 6 months. Carole Moen See following page for story

9 The Last of the 3 female, (the Bitches of Wood Dale), Doberman gang, Rescue had received a call about a couple in Elgin getting a divorce and neither could keep the dog. She was a blue Dobe. Having been down that path before, (a pretty dobe-right- it may have some dobe in it), I asked a Dobe friend of mine in Elgin to go check her out and make sure it was a Dobe before we arranged to take her. Janna reported that the dog was locked in the garage so she could not see anything, only heard constant barking. Her second visit saw Liza through the wooden fence. Liza was so dirty Janna was not sure about the color. But she was a Dobe. I called the owner to arrange a drop off and get some more information about the dog. He said she was two years old fixed and current on shots. He had her ears fixed so they would stand. He mentioned that when people came over he would put her mouthpiece on her so she could not bite. Oh goodie, that sounds like a muzzle. He asked me if he should bring it? Sept 2000 Liza s owner dumped her on my doorstep. I realized the dog from hell was now my problem. I was going to have to train her or kill her. Liza hated Bren. Liza felt she should be the lead dog. Bren had acquired that position by default when my red male died, and she became the only dog. Bren let Liza know she had no intention of giving that position up to some interloper. Liza at 50 pounds was an even match for Bren. The two of them proved that to me constantly. They could not be together or else a fight would break out. I brought Liza to the Novice class at Wildwood. She did great. She loved to work. She was very intense, but not aggressive with the other dogs. Liza bought herself a reprieve. How could you kill a dog that was this eager to learn? After having Liza 6 weeks I put her through the Doberman temperament test. She breezed through it achieving her WAC. (I had trained all my other Dobes to pass). At week 8 Liza got her CGC along with Jewel at Wildwood. Liza was doing so good I decided I wanted to put an AKC obedience title on her. Jewel was actually doing decent so I thought why not show them both. I had decided to take the three girls to our Doberman National that year. I entered Jewel and Liza in obedience. It was their debut. Liza got her first leg, a qualifying score. She achieved her second leg at Glenbard and her CD at the Xmas cluster show Dec 2001. Her 4 th leg was her highest score making her #3 dobe. Unfortunately there were only prizes for 1 st and 2 nd place dobes. (Jewel was still struggling with only 1 qualifying score). I had gotten a few calls now and then for Liza, but she was a handful. However after a year of training and now a title I decided to keep her. Due to structural problems Liza could not do jumping and continue onto the next level in obedience. I had entered her in graduate Novice. She had to do the broad jump. If we worked to a certain point her she would limp. In 2003 she tore her crucia. As soon as the one leg healed she tore the other one. While she was healing our DPCA (parent dobe club), 2 nd VP came in to judge at our Specialty. He stayed with me and met Liza. After that meeting he said the only way to keep a dog like her down would be to drug her. It was an interesting 4 months of trying to keep Liza inactive. Liza took many trips with the girls and me. Going to Maryland to visit my dog trainer friend, and again having the chance to have a top Koehler trainer from California work with her and Bren on their hatred of each other. Liza went to four Dobe Nationals, Fitchburg Mass, twice to Ft Mitchell Ky, once to Topeka Ks. She was in all four Parades of Rescues. She made several visits to Iowa to see relatives and my class reunions. She and Phoenix went with me by car to a dog trainer s conference outside of Austin Texas. She participated in the Arlington Family Pet Show several times. Every dog event she went to people loved her enthusiasm. She was a dog that needed a job to do. She was happy to go in the car anywhere. It was the two of us together, being away from the girls, and out of the house. When I got brave and started taking all of them, Liza was happy to be in the back of my SUV gated away from the girls. It meant she was included in the group and not left home alone. She always slept in her crate at night. It was the only way she could be in the bedroom with Bren & Jewel. I moved her upstairs early on because downstairs was to cold in the winter. She was your typical bald blue dobe. I also felt she wanted to be and needed to feel that she was part of the group. On Friday May 14 th Bill and I knew it was time. My vet was busy that day so I had to wait until he finished with all his patients. Doc came out to the car to see Liza. Her heart was still good, but she was not. We felt that she had a stroke. He told me to leave her in the car. He came back out and she peacefully went to sleep in the car. I still look at her cage and expect her to be there. Instead sometimes I see Phoenix. He spends many hours in her cage. He misses her very much even though they only played occasionally. Liza liked Phoenix, but she also bullied him. I was so fortunate to have the opportunity to train a dog like Liza and get help from all the people along the way. She was great to train, but not the easiest dog to live with. Hopefully wherever my 3 girls have ended up, even though Bren & Jewel arrived before Liza, maybe they can figure out how to get along and keep each other company. Bill, Phoenix and I will miss her.
