THE MAKING OF OUR BIG POTS PLACED INTO A MOULD Placed into a mould The clay is hit into the mould by hand. Our big pots are placed into the mould. We receive the clay from our own clay department, after all it all starts with the good basics. The lumps of clay are getting rolled until they are flat enough, the result are pieces with a thickness of around 3 centimeters. These pieces are hit into the mould, it needs a lot of detailing to make sure that the inner surface is clean and the edges are properly done. Ecology To reduce our ecological footprint our pots are not pre-baked or glazed afterwards. We use a technique the French call monocuisson. Primary baking and glazing happens all at once, using considerably less energy. Once this is done the pot will start his drying process, and that process begins inside his mould. This is beautifully illustrated on picture number 02., the clay loses water during this drying whereby the pot shrinks. The during of this process depends on the size of the pot and the type of the clay that was used. This varies from five to fourteen days and even longer. Once the pot is dry enough, the mould gets removed gently. TECHNICAL INFORMATION All our Domani items are handmade in our own European production Frostproof All our terra cotta and zinc collections that have a drainage hole are frost proof. Please note that some shapes need more care if you plant them and put them outside. Rubber feet All outdoor pots are delivered with rubber feet. Diameter This is the outside diameter of the pot Height This is the total height of the pot, from top to bottom Dimensions may vary due to shrinkage Limited We use real silver- and gold leaves, they will tarish with time. For indoor use Material information Terra cotta Our own high quality clay has a kaolin basis with special properties. While baking the clay will coalesce so that virtually no absorption of water is posibble. Our terra cotta absorbs no more than 3-4% of water. with this low percentage of water our potteries are guaranteed frost proof. Zinc We use titanium-zinc plates soldered together with tin. Our zinc contains 4% of silver, which makes it extremely durable. When zinc is exposed to humid air or water it will naturally oxidize. First the zinc will create a white powder to protect itsself, then a light grey patina will appear. Our zinc pots are delivered with water drainage on the side.
