Underdog Rescue of Florida Inc SUMMARY Mission UnderDog Rescue of Florida, Inc. exists to rescue and prevent small breed dogs from being euthanized in highkill shelters throughout the west coast of Florida. BACKGROUND & NEEDS Impact Statement Accomplishments include:december 2014 and June 2015, UnderDog Rescue was featured by SRQ Magazine as one of the leading charitable organizations in the community. April 2015, UnderDog Rescue was contacted by Cesar Millian and featured at a live performance at Van Wezel; recognized as stellar organization within the community. August 2015, UnderDog Rescue featured on ABC My Suncoast News for rescuing thirty-five hoarder case dogs from Miami, Florida. Later that month, recognized again for another hoarding situation totaling 80 dogs in one month. Current Goals:Continue providing consistent, high quality medical care for intake dogs to include extreme neglect/abuse cases and dogs slated for euthanasia by high kill shelters.continue supporting local shelters to reduce kill rate due to over crowding.continue supporting owner surrender situations-accepting dogs refused by over crowded shelters.continue accepting hard case, extreme neglect/abuse case dogs requiring extensive medical care; passed over by other rescue groups. Needs Statement 1. Donations toward medical care. UnderDog is an all volunteer organization, surviving on donations and adoption fees. All donations go toward the medical care of the dogs. The average medical cost for a dog having no complications is $257. This does not include the hundreds of dogs accepted hit by cars, abused, heartworm infected, neglected, and slated to be killed by over crowded shelters. Average cost for complications is $800- $1200 per dog.2. Volunteers needed to foster, transport, and overall support goals of organization. Background Statement UnderDog Rescue founded by Shona Otto in 2004, officially became 501c3 in 2008. UnderDog Rescue of Florida is a small dog (non-breed specific) rescue. Our stellar reputation of excellence has been demonstrated in the community and throughout Florida for a decade. UnderDog has saved thousands and thousands of dogs. Known for doing what is best for each dog. UnderDog is one of the few rescues that accept dogs who are heartworm infected, injured, or require extensive medical care. The majority of UnderDogs were scheduled for euthanasia at kill shelters throughout Florida. UnderDog is contacted DAILY by owners, shelters, and other sources asking them to accept unwanted dogs. Due to over-crowding (a result of economy decline), many shelters have changed policies, forcing decisions to quickly euthanize healthy, social, loving dogs. UnderDog Rescue is typically one of the first groups contacted to assist with dogs whose lives would otherwise be destroyed. UnderDog maintains a wonderful relationship with Sarasota Animal Services as SAS strives to place as many dogs as possible. At times, dogs who are not doing well in a shelter environment or dogs who are injured will go to UnderDog for more extensive care. UnderDog has worked hard to maintain superior quality of care while performing their due-diligence as an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(C)3, charitable organization. Being an all-volunteer organization, UnderDog does not have a shelter or paid staff, but operates solely on adoption fees and donations which go directly to the care of the dogs. This includes shelter fees, medications, spay/neuter, all shots, heartworm testing and treatment, monthly flea/tick/heartworm preventatives, microchips, dentals, surgeries, skin treatments, setting broken bones, or any other health care deemed necessary by their veterinarians. UnderDog vets offer reduced charges to support the rescue effort and help keep adoption fees reasonable, but their services are not free. UnderDog often relies on extra donations to pay expenses when the cost of care exceeds a realistic adoption fee. UnderDog volunteers are passionate about saving dogs, and open their homes to foster dogs from intake until adoption. Volunteers provide a safe, loving, stable environment where dogs have time to adjust, heal from surgeries and overall, feel wanted. UnderDog has approximately sixty volunteers who collectively work together as a team and care for anywhere between seventy to one-hundred dogs. It is UnderDog's mission to save, rehabilitate, and find the best suitable home where the dog can live a forever healthy, happy life. There is no greater satisfaction for a foster volunteer than to see their dog at an outside café or playing at the dog park with their new owner. UnderDog adopters are extraordinary and frequently stay in touch with the organization for years to come. Adopters are grateful to UnderDog for saving the dog who has now become a part of their life. UnderDog consistently receives updates, pictures and holiday greetings from furry friends adopted in years past. It is truly a blessing, and validates the hard work and selfless acts of the many volunteers who have given of their time, 2

effort and heart to save the life of an unwanted dog. Another amazing attribute of UnderDog is their philosophy of, Once an UnderDog, always an UnderDog. They rescue their dogs for life! Although their organization takes decision making about potential adopters very seriously, if for any reason, challenges arise and the dog needs to be rehomed, the dog comes back to the organization. UnderDog understands life is unpredictable and although they make the very best decision up front on adopters, on occasion, emergencies surface. Once UnderDog makes a commitment to save the life of a dog, they do it for life. Statement from the Board Chair To describe the feeling of saving a dog who is on the 4pm kill list in a high kill shelter, receiving the neglected, abused, dog and accepting the dog into our rescue. Then, watching the dog transform from a mental state of fear and depression where as some dogs simply give up... to watch them turn into a dog whose tail is up, learns to play, knows that its next meal will be available and who receives all the love, medical attention, emotional assurance to become a dog who is happy and learns "again" or "for the first time", that human touch can be a wonderful thing... to watch these dogs go from pure neglect, pain and suffering to being adopted through a secure, safe, adoption process that provides a forever loving, stable and safe home...there is no greater reward than to watch this transformation to joy and pure happiness. Statement from the CEO/Executive Director Areas Served FL FL- Charlotte FL- DeSoto FL- Hardee FL- Hillsborough FL- Lee FL- Manatee FL-Pinellas FL- Sarasota UnderDog Rescue supports shelters through out the State of Florida, but primarily resides in Sarasota/Bradenton, Florida. UnderDog also supports local residents who due to unforeseen circumstances are forced to rehome their animals and have been refused by local shelters due to over crowding.
