Retriever Review Issue 1 Founded 1975 January 2019 President's Message Happy New Year... can you believe it's already 2019? We are excited to get started on our Club events! Most currently we are looking for folks to man the Breed Booth at the Rose City All Breed Cluster this January. We have the very talented Judy Slayton-Bachofner organizing the work sheet, so please contact Judy to sign up (Judy's phone # 360-837-3909). Also happening is our well attended January Membership Meeting which is being hosted by Judy and Scott Chambers. Please see the suggested Alphabet - pot luck list for your suggested food group and we will look forward to seeing you all there. This meeting is always well attended with all our out of town members attending... we also pick our Judges for upcoming events in 2020. Please fill out your Judges' Nomination sheet and get it sent in to Judy Chambers before the deadline! Remember our work force that makes this club work is all of us Volunteering. Celeste 2019 Officer and Board Member Nominations President: Barb Gilchrist Vice President: Cindy Freeman Secretary: Lizzie Moir Treasurer: Greg Huntzinger New Board Members: Judy Chambers Judy Slayton-Bachofner Returning Board Members: Susan Huntzinger Lili Lobinger Cooper's Capers This year the Langley Chamber of Commerce funded the purchase of a dozen small Christmas trees to be decorated by various service clubs. These trees have been placed throughout downtown Langley. The South Whidbey Garden Club was selected to decorate one of these trees and a group of ladies from the garden club...including Christine...had a great time getting 'the little Christmas tree by the library' ready for the season. This included supervision by Cooper...aka: Inspector Clouseau. He had a great time wandering around all of the ladies, inspecting the bags of decorations, sniffing the tree and being reminded not to pee on it! Then, at the right moment, when a close-up picture of the decorators' sign was being taken...'you-know-who' had to stick his nose in and photo-bomb the shot. Well, when you're a supervisor you're always on the job. 3

You may want to bring your own water, but there is a faucet near by. Please text or phone me at 503-871-0052 with your preferred time. (Texting is best!) Jeff Kennedy 4

Cooper's Capers ~ Part Deux As the Christmas carol goes..."sleigh bells ring, are you listening?" Last Christmas Cooper received a Christmas gift of a fabric Christmas 'Wreath' to wear around his neck. It's red velvet with a white border and small brass bells are along the white velvet edge. This year Cooper is hot stuff wearing his wreath again! When Christine brought out his wreath he quickly remembered it! You should see him each morning wiggling and wagging his tail as Christine puts it around his neck. Then it's positioned, he looks at us with wild-eyed excitement realizing that he's wearing his favorite Christmas gift! He bolts away, head held high, trotting and jingling his way around the house. He makes an extra victory lap around the living room giving us the eye each time he passes us. He's just having a ball and he knows it. Today Christine took Coop downtown and he wore his special wreath. Christine said that Coop just pranced down the sidewalk and smiled at everybody he saw...he was in struttin' his stuff and wanted everyone to hear his bells. I've never had a dog that enjoyed being such a show-off! He had such a good time today. Tonight after dinner, I held his wreath low like a toreador, positioning it so he could run up and slip his head straight into it...he saw me from across the room, quickly trotted over, tail wagging and head down while aiming for the wreath. It was a bulls-eye and I quickly slipped it over his head and past his ears. "Oh Cooper!" I said. "What a handsome man! Let me see!" Coop spun around a couple times, gave me a quick kiss, then went to the door and put his nose to the doorjamb. He wanted to go for a walk all dressed up. "No, not tonight Coop, we'll go tomorrow morning," I said. He came back to me and I slipped his wreath off and put it on the counter. It seems that everyday is Christmas when Coop wears his wreath... 6

The sportsman show (February 6-10) is an excellent opportunity to educate the public about labradors, our club and to socialize older puppies or adult dogs. Contact Jeff Kennedy (texting is best) at 503-871-0052. Check your calendar and be ready to sign up for a shift at the January meeting. weekdays shifts are most in need. 8
