2 P R E S I D E N T S L E T T E R Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! We all have lots to be thankful for this year even if some things are not going well for some or all of us. Please take just a moment to give thanks for the joy of having your Labrador - your loyal friend, companion and pet sometimes mischievous and troublemaking, but always lovable. There is none better. Not all people appreciate dogs the way we do. For example, right now in Bibb County Georgia (the Macon area), according a recent article in Best in Show Magazine, there is a new animal shelter proposed. This has prompted a City council member to propose an ordinance requiring that all dogs and cats over the age of 6 months be spayed or neutered. There a few exceptions to this ordinance, including trained hunting dogs, police, search and rescue, herding and animals kept in a kennel for training and resale and for field and agility trials. Conformation dogs do not seem to be exempt (and probably conformation owners and breeders were not consulted), but the ordinance proposes to allow citizens to buy a breeding license for no more than one litter per year at a cost of $50.00. However the director of Bibb County s animal welfare director wants the cost of the license to be well above the cost of spay or neuter to give incentive to have the procedure carried out right from the start. If you live in the Macon area perhaps you could send them some input/ insight. If you don t perhaps you could give them a piece of your mind. I don t guess that the Bibb county shelter is going to be the future home of too many AKC registered pure bred Labrador retrievers ( or other AKC registered animals) It is completely irrational to think that there is any reason to have such an ordinance in the first place, to not permit responsible breeders to continue to act responsibility, to limit the exemptions to hunting dogs, service type dogs, and to retailers. The thought that not spaying or neutering the exempt animals has any relation to what they do is as idiotic as not exempting other groups of dogs that should be exempt for what they do, but do not appear to have been included. This is simply another attack on responsible breeders and owners instead of an attempt to reduce the activities of irresponsible owners. We need to be beware of laws which are not well thought out, but appear to be a prophylactic reaction to a need for revenue. We need to speak out in opposition to this type of legislation and help preserve and protect our Breed and friends. But I digress,.. have a Happy Thanksgiving. We hope to see you at the Christmas gathering on December 1, 2012. Barry Staples

7 T h e A l p h a b e t S o u p o f T e s t i n g As many of us have noticed, potential puppy buyers have become very aware of the many new tests available to help assure the future health of the puppies that we are offering. We as breeders should welcome the many questions and concerns that arise from our first meetings with these new owners. We speak with people that have had health issues with former pets and they are anxious to be reassured that we have done as much as we can to assure them of a long and happy relationship with one of our pups. Many of us ourselves have known the heartache of an illness or disease in one of our dogs or pups. We also know that not all things can be eliminated by testing. We, as breeders, always do our best to make certain that we are doing everything that we can to make certain that we are not passing along any potential genetic risks. In fact, we as breeders should consider it our duty to educate ourselves and our potential buyers. With all of the testing that is available today it is still impossible to guarantee that a puppy will be totally free of all genetic problems but being able to show potential new owners that we have done as much as we can to assure health should be a major concern of ours. That we have the OFA website listings of our dogs and the results of their tests is an important consideration of many new buyers. Everyone has their own testing routine and what they require of themselves but I am sure we can agree that there are a few that are imperative. OFA has a list of what they consider breed requirements. Of course, hip and elbow dysplasia testing through radiographs read by their panel of doctors, eye examinations by an ACVO ophthalmologist done annually and PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) done by DNA testing are considered our basic tests before breeding. These are the tests that we are all familiar with but as we progress in the field of DNA testing we find more and more tests available. Some for diseases that we are familiar with and others that seem rather obscure. We should take each test into consideration and make ourselves knowledgeable and then use the information as it pertains to our own breeding programs. It should be noted that we cannot guarantee the future health of a litter and buyers should not be led to believe that we can. The tests listed next are what some believe to be imperative and other breeders do not. We must take each one into consideration and use our own experience and judgement to decide what testing we should do/ Canine heart disease is a term the covers several heart related diseases that are found by first using cardiac auscultation which is most cost effective and color Doppler echocardiograms which are much more comprehensive and highly recommended.

8 T h e A l p h a b e t S o u p o f T e s t i n g EIC or exercise induced collapse has been found in dogs that will collapse after heavy exercise such as that found in hunting or agility competition. Other dogs with more severe disease will collapse after very light exercise. EIC is generally found by the owner and the severity determined by placing the dog on a treadmill to determine the length of time before collapse. Other diseases that have testing available and are tested for by some breeders are tests for centro nuclear myopathy, hyperuricosuria, narcolepsy, and retinal dysplasia. Certainly there are others but as was stated earlier, we must use our own judgement and situation to decide what testing regime we should use in our own breeding programs. Doing our own research and educating ourselves is the best way to decide what is best for ourselves. Speaking with more experienced breeders to find out which tests they use and why is invaluable. Also, knowing our pedigrees and those of other dogs that we wish to add to our breeding programs is most important of all. It is wonderful that potential owners are aware of health issues in the breed that we love and are able to ask relevant questions. It is our duty to speak with them, educate them and assure them that we are doing all that we can to minimize the chances of hereditary diseases in our pups. We will probably never be able to offer an iron clad guarantee we can assure ourselves that we have done all that we can to offer a health pup.
