Newsletter December 2012 Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. 8000 Morgan Territory Rd. Livermore, CA 94550 Email Tax ID: 72-1546354 Dedication Lost at Christmas time: Max and Harry The holidays are supposed to be a joyous occasion. Family and friends reunite to find strength and comfort in familiar company. We finish up the year in cheer and revelry and share our spirit with the hope that next year is a chance to turn things around. It is during the holidays when the loss of a loved one exacerbates the pain of the grieving process. Our emotional state is already sensitized with anticipation of the holidays. The death of something so dependent on us has a way of overloading our senses. Inevitably, we must reassess our priorities as we redefine what is important to us at this moment. Gail and AJ are two of an unfortunate many people who have experienced the loss of a loved family member in December. Please reach out to those who are grieving this month, and give them the support they need to have a better tomorrow. In Loving Memory of Your Sweet Max. May his loving spirit be with you always and fill your heart with joy and peace. With Deepest Love, DB In Memory of Max, the stray kitty who wandered onto the porch of Gail Barrett five years ago. Poor Max was suffering from diabetes and many other problems, but Gail took him into her home and provided him a wonderful and loving warmth and kindness in his twilight years. Our utmost admiration goes out to you Gail, as well as out heartfelt sorrow. Love, Nancy and Rory My little dog, Harry, passed away today. He had three bad seizures last Wednesday and never really recovered. I am sure he is frolicking in a nice big green field with his brothers and friends. He was a great dog, the best boy ever and I was lucky to have had him.
of 11 AJ DEAR ROMANIA ANIMAL SUPPORTERS» Dear Romania Animal Rescue Friends, Our thanks go out to all the wonderful supporters who have made our programs so successful this year. So many animals throughout the country of Romania were not born to suffer on the streets or in the shelters, not born to succumb to horrible diseases or be hit by cars or poisoned. So many animals were treated, cared for by our veterinary program, and we were able to help shelters to build their facilities, all thanks to donations from YOU - the amazing and world renowned Romania Animal Rescue donors!!! Educational programs were started in schools and booklets were handed out to children at community events. Animals found their ways into loving and forever homes. Veterinarians received heightened spay/neuter skills via the Veterinary Training Camp sponsorships provided by Romania Animal Rescue donors. Bless each and every one of you for your love and compassion for the animals that need your help so dearly. I wish you a wonderful Holiday Season and a fabulous pro-animal welfare 2013! Love to each of you and your families!, Nancy Janes Dear Friends, December is the month when we reunite with friends and family, and reflect back on the events that happened throughout the year. 2012 was for RAR a hard-working year when we think of the thousands of miles we drove for the tens of spayathon events in various towns in Romania, the thousands of animals we spayed and neutered, the veterinary training sessions we sponsored for young dedicated veterinarians, the animals we covered the medical bills for, and reuniting pets left behind in Romania with their family in the US. All this brings a big smile on our faces and makes us proud that we have accomplished a durable quality change in the life of countless homeless souls in Romania. Our goal is to continue to improve our work in the year to come. As our work expands, so does our need for more trained caregivers to be involved in the programs. Our biggest wish for next year is a van that our enlarged team can use to travel to the remotest regions of Romania that continually request our help. Our animals count on your wonderful support and generosity so that as many as possible get immediate help with spay and neuter and medical care in the year to come. We hope you'll stand by our work and projects in the next year and we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year for you and your family and friends. Thank You, Dr. Aurelian Stefan, DVM Veterinary Director, Romania Animal Rescue/Animal Spay Neuter Int'l Shor-line representative in Romania The RAR Map of Romania

of 11 So far we have raised about $7735, about enough to buy the tires, hubcaps, and the engine. Help us buy the rest of the van! It is urgent that we get a new van for the spring. We have been looking for a new van but the cost of around US$44,70 (about 35,000) is prohibitive. We are now in search of a gently used van that would cost no more than US$25,600 (about 20,000). Dr. Aurelian Stefan has been donating the use of his car since 2008, and the wear and tear on his car is immense. In order to continue our life-saving spay/neuter program, we will need to have a van to travel the country of Romania. This van will help us improve our projects by having at hand all we need both for staff and animals. Thank you very much. You can help us with the down payment, and/or with monthly payments as you wish. For anyone who will be kind and generous enough to sponsor for the van, we will post your name on the van, i.e., Thanks to the generous donation by [your name]. Please make a donation for a van to get us to these areas of Romania. A lot of unwanted puppies saved! --Anda Popescu Tg. Jiu Spayathon Romania Animal Rescue spayed/neutered 30 dogs and cats for the Asociation GIA last week. This event took place in Tg. Jiu, Romania. ANIMAL CARE» Rescue of the Month: Zuzu Zuzu is a stray dog that had a terrible fracture in her leg. Because of the state of her hind leg, she required surgery to amputate the hind leg. FamilyVet placed a catheter in her front leg ready for anesthesia and IV fluids. An endotracheal tube maintained her airway during the procedure and the surgical area was clipped. FamilyVet has a separate room for clipping to ensure no loose hair contaminates the surgery site. She was placed on a heated table and connected to the oxygen supply and monitors, which recorded her pulse and respiratory rate. A surgical scrub was performed on the clipped area and sterile drapes are used to prevent contamination. After surgery, Zuzu recovered in a warm kennel under supervision. Codita Saved We found Codita in very bad shape. He had high fever and a bad cough and he needed treatment urgently. We asked help to Nancy from RAR and as you can see we got the help we asked for. He
of 11 is well now and safe. Thank you Nancy! --Mihaela Mocanu Sticker Tumor Update Before Treatment You may remember last month we asked for your help with the treatment for a dog found in the fields outside Craiova. She had contracted a horrible Sticker tumor (a sexually transmitted disease that is prevented by spay/neuter). She was brought into the Family Vet Clinic in Craiova for spay by Nanu Madalina. With your support, we treated her with chemotherapy. Here is the latest photo of her, from December 1. After Treatment
of 11 Heeeere's Gracey! You may recall Gracey and Gizmo, her brother, were found by Alexandru Dominic in a park in Bucharest. Alex contacted Romania Animal Rescue for our help in getting these little puppies (about 7 weeks old) to safety. Pictured, left, is Gracey in her new home in Holland. Caring for Sixty This dog was found on the side of the road, wet and cold. Two people rescued the dog and brought her to Dr. A's veterinary clinic, where they found two bad fractures on her legs. She was operated on by Dr. A's team. She showed signs of recently having a litter and we suppose she was looking for food when she tried
of 11 to cross the busy highway. This dog was lucky she was rescued by the two guardian angels. Now she is recovering at their rescuer's home. We call her Sixty. She is the sweetest dog and will find a forever home for sure. Sixty is another example of why spay and neuter is so important. RESCUE NOTICES» Mr. Termure Needs Your Help Help is needed for food and shelter repairs. Romania Animal Rescue is planning to go and spay/neuter Mr. Termure's animals in the Spring if all goes as planned. Mr. Termure's shelter recently was the victim of horrible fire. The caretaker, Teresa, died, as well as 120 animals. Please help Mr. Termure with donations. Thank you very much for your help for this amazing man for donations to Mr. Termure. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM» The charity Red Panda recently held a play in Bucharest teaching animal welfare to children and their families. Romania Animal Rescue was asked for a donation of our educational booklets to hand out to viewers and participants alike. Thanks to donations from you and from Mayhew Animal Home, UK, we were able to provide 150 educational booklets. It's always great to be able to help when asked! MESSAGE FROM TOBY» Thank you, Ruth Osborne, for putting this ad together. Toby had a broken front leg at about 14 weeks old. Although the bone healed, the ligaments in the other front leg are stretched and not as tight as they should be. He is about 10 months old now and is under the care of Speranta Pentru Animale Craiova. Hi, I'm Toby from Romania To get me into a nice new home and off the street can cost around US$800 ( 500, 500), which doesn't even include the vet fees for repairing my broken leg! For this amount, Romania Animal Rescue can spay 37 females, which means after 1 year, 576 puppies can be saved from suffering like I have.
