RAM SALE WELCOME Welcome to Fearn for our third on farm ram sale, we hope you enjoy the experience and find rams that suit your requirements, please give us feedback on the sale and the sheep. For the first time this year in conjunction with Innovis breeding sheep we have Aberfield rams for sale, although not born here they have been with us since October and have been wintered on our system. When the opportunity to work with Innovis arose we decided that it was a logical step for us to make, there approach to breeding sheep mirrors ours, they are focused on producing breeding sheep that will thrive on a forage based system whilst comfortably meeting market requirements. the rams you see before you have been raised on a home grown forage based ration which included a small amount of cereals throughout the winter, they were never housed. In April the ration reverted to grass alone and it has remained that way until now with the exception of minerals. For the first time this year all rams have been rigorously inspected by our vet and anything unsuitable for sale has been withdrawn from the catalogue. Every ram has been through the turning crate and his eyes, mouth, feet, penis and testicles have been checked along with locomotion and general soundness. If you have any questions regarding the inspection please speak to one of us or our vet who is here today. For your convenience all rams are in the Heptivac P+ system, and have been dipped and given Cydectin 2% LA injectable solution and Zolvix on the day of the sale so they are ready to enter your quarantine facilities when they arrive at your farms. Thanks also to our sponsors, Norvite, Easter Ross Vets, Allan WJ Wilson, Robertsons Crop Services, Johnston & Carmicheal, Clydesdale Bank and Cairngorm Brewery, we have excellent long term working relationships with all of them and really appreciate their support. LAST YEAR S PURCHASE OF A VERY WELL MUSCLED TEXEL HAS PROVEN A GOOD BUY. When John called and asked me to write the foreword for this year s Fearn Great from Grass ram sale his timing couldn t have been any better as I d just returned from an early morning trip to Scotbeef at Bridge of Allan to deliver the first draw of this year s lambs. We love coming to the Fearn ram sale as it s a very relaxed atmosphere with a good social slant to the whole occasion and all very well run by both the Scott family, their team and Dingwall mart. As we are not long into sheep farming having only started six years ago (now up the heady heights of a 200-strong flock of cross-bred ewes), being able to feel our way in via an on-farm sale like Fearn with so many helpful people around to answer questions on the rams was a big plus for us. As both my wife and I have jobs outside the farm (Susie as a vet at the local practice and myself with Quality Meat Scotland), our sheep enterprise has to work efficiently with little time available for protracted lambing periods or daily filling up of creep feeders for growing lambs. Fearn rams have helped enormously in meeting this aim firstly by using an Easycare teaser purchased at the first sale in 2012 (together with two NZ Suffolks and a Charollais) and secondly by the majority of our lambs finishing off grass with no supplementary feeding. Last year s purchase of a very well muscled Texel with figures all in the top 5% has proven a good buy. He has clicked very well with our Cheviot Mule ewes producing vigorous fast growing lambs. The ram himself came home in really good condition and didn t lose an ounce of it during tupping time nor much through the winter. So the strapline of Great from Grass has definitely borne out in my experience. I hope the sale goes well for everyone and you go home with either a good ram or a smile on your face or both! All the best Johnny C. Mackey Wester Drumlochy, Blairgowrie
