HOT DOG NEWSLETTER HELP NST&ODC is a volunteer organisation and always needs your help to make the club run smoothly. If you are able to assist with driving the van or stewarding at any of the competitions, please let your trainer or van staff know, or email volunteers@northernsuburbsdogclub.org President s Report I am happy to report our club is thriving. The club is showing excellent numbers of par:cipants in all disciplines. Every week we are signing up new members to par:cipate and to be involved in class ac:vi:es. These class ac:vi:es help the dog and owner to socialise, play, exercise and show they are good ci:zens in our community. Addi:onally, it is a chance for the dog and owner to bond. And above all, to enjoy the :me with their dog. In this edition President s Report 1 For your Diaries 2 Fee Increases 3 Vaccination Policy 3 DogsWest Obedience Trial DogsWest Agility Trial 7 A Word from our Sponsor 5 10 Our club is run by marvellous volunteers who religiously turn up to every training session. Some of our long serving volunteers have donated their :me for thirty years and beyond to the club. We are lucky that we can call on that experience when required. Consistently these long termers guide the inexperienced volunteers along. Our club grows and matures every year with changes to personnel, equipment used and progress in instruc:ng techniques and methods. Furthermore as a posi:ve training club our dogs are a lot happier. This is illustrated by consistently good trialling performances by our members in both DogsWest and club trials. NST&ODC June 2015 1

June 7th: DogsWest Agility Trial - Agility and Jumping And also by constant compliments by our members to our instructors. We also get old members returning with their new dogs to train. The instructors group we have established has demonstrated their exper:se in dog training by their professionalism in teaching people how to train their dogs. All instructors are eager to assist members with answers to any ques:on. A great deal of apprecia:on also goes to our van staff volunteers who come every Sunday. They do a wonderful job in enrolling people with their dogs and direc:ng them to the correct classes. Our club is always looking forward to new opportuni:es to improve. This can be by new ideas through members sugges:ons. If you do have a sugges:on, pass it on to your current instructor, van staff or commijee member. So I will see you at training! We had a fabulous day for the Dogs West Agility Double Header on June 7th. It was a huge competition and a very long day for some! Well done to everyone who participated. The weather was not so nice for the DogsWest Obedience and Rally-O Trial but we still managed to achieve some great results. As usual a great big thanks to all the judges, volunteers and organisers. There is another Members Obedience and Rally-O Competition in August so get ready to enter. It is great fun for everyone. This edition is packed with tips on keeping your dogs comfortable in the colder months, as well as results from competitions and lots of photos and useful information. Due to recent outbreaks of Canine/Kennel Cough in Perth as well as new veterinary research and guidelines, the NST&ODC committee have updated the club's vaccination policy. All new members must display evidence of C5 immunity at a minimum. June 2015 Hot Dog Topical: Winter is coming As the cold weather approaches, it is time to consider the needs of our pets. We are lucky in Perth to not suffer extremes of cold temperatures, but that doesn t mean that we are immune from cold conditions. Like us, our pets get used to warmer weather so they feel the cold just as we do. It is important your dog has a warm, comfortable place to sleep that is protected from draughts and soft enough to cushion any sore joints. An extra wool blanket can go a long way towards helping retain body heat. Try to keep your dog as dry as possible. Keep up the diet and exercise. It is very tempting to stay warm inside, but winter pooch pouch can cause just as many problems for your furry friend as for you. Also check that your pet has free access to clean fresh water. This is as important in the colder months as it is in the warmer weather. It is particularly important to keep an eye on our older dogs. Like us, they suffer from aches and pains due to aging and injury. Look out for any stiffness or obvious signs of discomfort and be sure to speak to your vet about options for keeping your dog as comfortable as possible. Best of all, enjoy getting out and about in the cooler weather. Here is some great news.modified Stand for Exam For those dogs who are uncomfortable with the traditional Stand For Exam, in CLUB ACHIEVEMENT TRIALS only where recommended by a senior instructor they are now able to qualify using a modified version. The modified version is : a stand stay where the judge walks around the dog no closer than one metre away from the dog which had to stand for 30 secs before handler returns to the dog. A Reminder about Long Leads You should have a soft collar, half check or a harness on him do not use a check chain or head collar as he could seriously hurt himself if he takes off. This is exactly the same look you get from your friends, when you say you re thinking of giving up NST&ODC June 2015 4
