Cavaliers of the South, A CKCSC USA Regional Club The Southern Cavalier Williamsburg Show Was a Wonderful Time Spring 2015 The girls ruled at the Williamsburg show! Best in Show each day was awarded to beautiful bitches! It was a great show with a very high entry, comparable to a National! The Puppy of the Year challenge was taken by Chew Creek Red Solo Cup, JW Toby, owned by Patricia DePhillip. We had a lovely year end banquet at the Center Street Grill where the awards for the top cavaliers were handed out (see picture below) and there were A LOT of happy, smiling faces when these lovely certificates were handed out by President Bruce Henry. During the show there was lots of great ringside hospitality! From a special recipe punch, donuts, apple pie on Pi day, biscuits, pastries and more! Kudos to our show chairs Caryna Baker Fox and Christy Fox for putting on a great event! The Cavalier Alliance and Cavalier Rescue USA held silent auctions which had wonderful items up for auction. The money raised went to rescue and also the vet assistance for older cavaliers via the Cavalier Alliance. Both groups are 501 c3 organizations and support only Cavaliers. It was an honor to see some of the rescues in attendance. We even groomed some of them and made them all purdy for their photo shoot at the show. Those photos will be used for the rescue website to find these precious souls a forever home. Cavaliers are blessed to have national rescue organizations that love them, help heal them and find them forever homes. Page 2 Letter from the President Spring can t get here fast enough. It s been quite a long, cold, wet and even icy winter in the south this year. We ve had four snow days in Louisiana, so certainly no global warming here! Mud and Cavaliers don t mix well! As we move into the spring we host two of the biggest shows of the year, Williamsburg and Atlanta. Williamsburg was very successful this year with entries approaching 150 each day. Caryna Baker-Fox and Christa Fox did an outstanding job as show chairs for the COS and are to be commended. Everyone seemed to have a great time. The Atlanta show will be held May 7-10 at the Atlanta Airport Hilton. This is always a fun show. We have three outstanding internationally known judges as well as health testing, a hospitality suite for everyone, and several vendors planning to attend. Let s all show our support and turn out with a big entry! The Board of Directors for the COS is working diligently to keep our existing venues and locate great new ones. Contracting acceptable and economically feasible hotels that will invite in all of our cavaliers is a daunting task. We are working to acquire new venues in major metropolitan locations that are easily accessible by both car and plane. So, stay tuned for some exciting new venues over the next few years as we explore new show sites. Concerning membership, we are moving forward with our membership drive. We continue to update our new website (www.cavaliersofthe south.org). We are developing a mentor program for new and existing members, that would like to pair with experienced members in area such as conformation, therapy, performance, or just general day-to-day cavalier care. Several members have volunteered to be mentors, but we need more. We want to encourage our newest members to become involved in the COS. Let s get them to the shows to meet existing members and let them take advantage of health clinics and other opportunities the shows have to offer. We should make sure that all new puppy owners understand the benefits of the COS and help them become members. Let s streamline this process to help our club remain strong. Dr. Kevin Cline President, Cavaliers of the South

COS May Specialty Show Needs YOU! Make plans to attend our Atlanta May Specialty Show, May 7-10 at the Atlanta Airport Hilton! Details of judges are on the back page of the newsletter along with the different activities. There will be health clinics on Saturday, our annual AGM, a silent auction, evening banquet & small live auction with a Breeder discussion at the Banquet and of course some great vendors! Also for the first time, we will have a COS Specialty parade for our veterans and also recognize o u r t h e r a p y / s e r v i c e cavaliers. Registration information will be released in the premium, so be sure to sign up your vet eran and t herapy/ service cavalier and parade around the ring. We are also soliciting items for our auctions. If you can donate an item, please contact Sharon Utych at utych@email.com so we can plan accordingly. We are also looking for weekend volunteers to assist in the ring. If you can be a gate or ring steward, table steward, announcer and help out ringside, please contact our show chairs, Paula Ayers (playerscav@aol.com) o r B r e n d a M a r t z a t (cavhaven@aol.com). Cavalier Rescue USA is planning on having a 50/50 raffle to benefit Cavalier Resc ue US A which uses the funds to defer medical costs of the cavaliers in rescue. Be sure to purchase your raffle ticket at the Specialty! Let s make this show a big success! Be sure and get your entries in on time! Support Cavalier Rescue USA. GEORGIA needs FOSTER VOLUNTEERS BADLY! We have very limited resources in GA. Cavaliers that come into rescue in GA most often have to be transported to another state because of the lack of fosters. PLEASE VISIT WWW.CAVALIERRESCUEUSA.ORG TO SIGN UP AND VOLUNTEER! Have you visited our COS Website? Our newly redesigned website is up and running! The look and feel of the website is similar to the National s website for consistency. Included on the COS web are back issues of The Southern Cavalier in FULL glorious color, COS officers and contact information, COS event information (with links to the National s event page), a therapy dog section and an under construction mentor section. More enhancements are upcoming including a slideshow section of your puppy people and their pets! Check it out at www.cavaliersofthesouth.org Page 3

Judges Critique - Fun Match Chattanooga Dec. 4,2014 Spring 2015 I would like to thank Cavaliers of the South for inviting me to judge, and everyone who helped make my job so enjoyable. To all my entries, thank you for your support this day. I found that I had some lovely young dogs and bitches to choose from. I was especially pleased to see so many exhibits with really lovely type, structure, movement and temperament! Every exhibit was shown in excellent condition. This was a fun afternoon for myself, the dogs, and their owners. Judge Michelle Lander (Jayba US) JUNIOR PUPPY DOG (2) 1 Darane Spider Man (Rackler) - This 8 month old Ruby boy was of good size, substance and great bone and depth of chest. He had the most gorgeous eyes and a beautiful coat coming. A short coupled boy and well balanced. He could gain a bit of confidence but he was still happy and sweet. I have no doubt that the confidence will come with just a little more experience. BEST PUPPY DOG AND RESERVE WINNERS DOG 2 Closeburn Preston Pierce Stuart (Cullen and Fairchild) - 5 month Blenheim boy very well marked with great pigment and texture. A little longer loin but still a good outline. Good reach and drive but a little close in the rear when moving away. I would like to see this young man develop and fill out. GRADUATE PUPPY DOG (1) 1 Brookhaven Jesse McKinley (Wills) - This ruby boy was very in tune with his handler. He had an attractive head, good eyes, and very good pigment. A sweet temperament. I would like to see a little less leg and not quite the shape that I prefer. BRED BY EXHIBITOR DOG (1) 1 Closeburn Spencer Stirling Stuart (Cullen and Fairchild) - 19 month Blenheim boy with a great outline both standing and on the move. Excellent pigment and correct coat texture. Good turn of stifle and well let down hock. WINNERS DOG AND BEST IN MATCH JUNIOR PUPPY BITCH (4) 1 Closeburn Bonny Wee Kilt (Fairchild) - A lovely little 5 month old tri girl with good bone on a compact body. Due to her size and make she did not have a whole lot of movement. However, she made up for it in how cute and feminie she is. RESERVE WINNERS BITCH 2 Valentyne Sabrina (McCauley and O Brien) -A very mature 8 month old Blenheim. Good bone and body. Promise of a nice coat to come. A pretty face and eyes. She was very enthusiastic so the goal will be reeling it all in. 3 Closeburn Jilliana Stuart (Cullen and Fairchild) - 5 month old Blenheim. Longer in loin and nose. And could use some filling out. 4 Closeburn Bonny Baronet (Fairchild) - I loved this 5 month old Blenheim girl. Her compact body is well built with correct angulation front and rear. She has a pleasing head and eyes. She just needs more confidence and practice. Unfortunately, she did not want to walk yet. Page 8

Judges Critique - Fun Match Chattanooga, Dec. 4, 2014 SENIOR PUPPY BITCH (3) 1 Watersedge Pretty Litl Angel Eyes (Walzer and Cline) - A very stylish girl with excellent coat and pigment. I loved her beautiful structure and movement as she moved around the ring full of attitude. Darkest round eyes and big full ear feathers. WINNERS BITCH, BEST PUPPY IN MATCH, AND BEST OPPOSITE SEX IN MATCH 2 Truelegance Chantilly Lace (Sinn and Cromer) - Attractive head and expression on this well marked Blenheim girl. Very showy standing but slumped over a bit on the move. Just needing some more experience. Well made with good neck and correctly set shoulders. 3 Chadwick Ice Dancer (Wills) -Another Blenheim girl with a pleasing head piece and beautiful round dark eyes. She has the desired lozenge to go with her well marked body. A little longer cast than I prefer. GRADUATE PUPPY BITCH (1) 1 Chadwick Sky Blue Pink (Hoehn) -A well marked Blenheim girl, nicely coated for her age, and very confident. Beautiful dark eyes but with a more extreme head shape than I prefer being short in muzzle. Very clean moving in all directions. A dream to show, just in agreement with all that her owner asked. Top 10 reasons to pick up after your cavalier at a show locale 10. It s not that hard to do as there are typically bins and baggies readily available. 9. Maintain good hotel relationship so we can continue to provide great venues 8. People don t step in it and have to clean off their shoes in the hotel room. 7. Promotes good hand eye contact. You see it, you pick it up 6. You may think it helps fertilize the grass, but um, not really. 5. Most people don t like to scrap doggy do off their shoes every day. 4. When it rains, it gets really mushy and smelly if you don't pick it up 3. When its hot, it gets really smelly, period. 2. Even though your cavalier may like to smell it, it s not very sanitary 1. It s the proper thing to do! Page 9

COS Board Meeting Minutes - December 6, 2014 Spring 2015 December 6, 2014 EST Chattanooga, TN Agenda distributed in advance of the meeting Meeting called to order at 4:35 PM In Attendance: Kevin Cline, Linda Whitmire, Caryna Baker-Fox, Brenda Martz, Pat Mixon, Juhan Mixon Ricky Perkins (by Phone), Elizabeth Gerkin, Howard Bales, Michelle Lander (by phone) Previous Minutes: Motion: Brenda Martz motioned to approve the corrected minutes from August 7, 2014. Motion seconded by Linda Whitmire. Motion unanimously passed. Special Committee Reports: 1. Judge s Committee Report- Michelle Lander a. Judging Positions: Need to fill Jan Gallagher s position for the upcoming Williamsburg show. Suggestions have been made, including Charlie Fippin. b. We will solicit suggestions from our members for judges in the newsletter, as part of an overall effort to expand and grow our list of judges. The COS board would like to have a varied and diverse group of knowledgeable judges for our shows. c. We are happy to announce that Andy Vella will be judging at our May show. 2. Membership Committee Report Caryna Baker-Fox a. Directory: The membership directory project has been completed and the directories have been mailed. The directory looks great, and it will be a useful reference tool for our membership. The COS board would like to thank Kevin, who donated $100 towards the expense of producing the document. The board has great ideas about how to expand the scope of this project for next year, with the potential to include more sponsors and information. b. Earline is producing a list of people who have not renewed their 2015 COS membership. We can follow up with these folks and see if they are interested in renewing. c. Pat Mixon has developed a preliminary mentor list for the new website. In addition, she is putting together a membership packet in order to welcome new COS members. This will include: A letter from the President; links to key websites pages, and current events. A list of topics covered will include: Performance, Therapy, Grooming, Agility, Show registration, Breeding and Whelping. Page 12

COS Board Meeting Minutes - December 6, 2014 3. Social Media Committee Report a. The www.cavaliersofthesouth.org website is up, and running! We need more content, stories, photos, and information. Kevin, Ricky, David Butz, and Sharon Utych are all working very hard on developing the site further, and improving the appearance and functionality of the site. We need personal photos of new, happy Cavalier dog owners to display on the slide-show banner. We expect that this sort of personal connection to the site will help draw traffic to the various information centers. b. We need to add the board term limit information behind each board members name on the web page. 4. Trophy Committee Report Juhan Mixon a. Juhan needs at least three people to join the trophy committee. Juhan takes great care of the trophies, and polishes the silver, while Amanda and Heather keep the book. B. Four trophies are ready to be retired and will be auctioned off: The McDaniel; The Tinturn; The Lamar, and the Primrose. MOTION: Linda Whitmire motioned that the COS retire the above-mentioned trophies, and that it be noted in the newsletter, and that the trophies be auctioned off at the upcoming Atlanta show. Brenda seconded the motion, and motion passed unanimously. 5. Treasurer Report Elizabeth Gerkin a. Discussion of 2014/2015 POTY Banquet finances: All expenses submitted with receipts were reimbursed by the National club for the 2014 POTY event, but it took some time and effort to correctly allocate the expenses. In 2015, receipts will be sent straight through the National in order to simplify the accounting process. b. In order to reimbursed for any expenses incurred, a physical receipt is required. c. The COS has a new business account, in order to facilitate better financial management and controls. d. Finances as related to judges contracts: A physical receipt is required in order for a judge to be reimbursed for his/her travel expenses, including: car, parking, meals, etc. Contracts need to clarify which expenses are covered during interim stops, and this requirement for a physical receipt. Perhaps a standardized form could be used by all clubs for future judges contracts? Suggest this to the National club e. Investment of COS money: Elizabeth recommends investing $30K in checking, and $75K in savings as of today s meeting date. MOTION: Linda Whitmire motioned that we invest $$75K into savings and $30K into checking as of this date, seconded by Brenda. Passed, unanimously Page 13
