Hangsell card inside panels (2 chew) Issue Date: 5/4/2011 Page: 3 of 11 should be treated every 6 weeks. It is important ensure that the dog does not acquire offal in order break the life cycle of the hydatid tapeworm. It should be noted that the hydatid tapeworm poses a severe risk human health by transmission humans from infected dogs. HOOKWORMS & ROUNDWORMS Dogs and Puppies: Treat at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks and then every month until six months of age; thereafter every 3 months or on veterinary advice. Pregnant Bitches: Treat at mating, then 10 days before whelping and at 2 and 4 weeks after whelping, then every 3 months. WHIPWORMS Treat every 6 8 weeks after 3 months of age. TAPEWORMS Treat every 3 months except in hydatid tapeworm areas where every 6 weeks is recommended, or on veterinary advice. Dipylidium caninum tapeworms are transmitted by fleas. Control of this tapeworm will require effective control of the local flea population. Worms, if present, may not appear in the droppings at all, or may not appear for up 48 hours after treatment. GIARDIA This prozoan parasite is found commonly in dogs and may be the cause of diarrhoea, particularly in pups. It is more common amongst dogs living in multi-dog households and kennels. Giardia also occurs in humans and has hisrically been considered a potential zoonosis, however recent studies suggest that host-specific species may exist. Control of Giardia is difficult because the oocysts are resistant and long-lived in the environment. Diagnosis of suspected Giardia infection should be confirmed by a veterinary surgeon. Some evidence indicates that bathing and a move a noncontaminated environment in conjunction with treatment will improve overall control. Compatibility DRONTAL Chewable may be combined with other treatments, for example heartworm prevention, flea or tick treatment. Safety DRONTAL Chewable may be given safely all dogs including old animals, young pups, working dogs and greyhounds. It may be given pregnant bitches but is only clinically indicated in the last 10 days prior whelping. Side Effects: Vomiting may be observed in a small number of dogs after administration. RETREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS Worms often reinfest dogs so it is necessary : 1. treat the dog itself, 2. reduce environmental contamination by daily disposal of droppings, 3. remove tapeworm intermediate hosts eg. fleas. Follow the retreatment recommendations in the table below:
