PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Judge s Clinic in Michigan A big SHOUT OUT to Diane Constable and the Michigan Sporting Dog Judges clinic the weekend of June 21-22. Diane coordinated dogs and owners and presented to 20 or more prospective judges on the history and purpose of our breed, along with what the judges should be looking for in our FCR ring, per the standard. We were fortunate to have some nice dogs all with faults too but we could show and explain what was good, what could be better, etc. We had a good laugh during one of the 4 sessions about if only we could play Mr. Potato Head when we were picking our dogs. LOL Lola and I were fortunate enough to get to do the field demo for the prospective judges. These folks got extra points if they attended the demo. It was interesting to see the various breeds do their thing. So many different styles were displayed. We did a steady water double with bumpers and a starting pistol, and Lola wowed the crowd with her big water entry for both marks. The weather was perfect until late afternoon when it got a bit warm. Many thanks to Diane and also Helen Szostak for giving such a great presentation plus bringing their dogs. We even had a guest appearance by Kurt Anderson, who was at the clinic learning about other breeds. It would be great if any of you could attend the next clinic it is nice to have a variety of dogs to show these people. Supported Entry The supported entry in Lexington, KY on August 30 th is right around the corner! May want to make your hotel reservations ASAP it s a big show cluster and hotels will likely be filled. Speaking of big show clusters, won t you join us in Fort Wayne in October-November for the Old Fort Cluster shows? It is a 5-day cluster starting Wednesday, Oct. 29 th and concluding on Sunday, Nov. 2 nd. There is a big raffle, bathing stations, plenty of parking. Let me know if you are coming and I will try to save you a crating/grooming space! There is a great little Italian restaurant we could walk to for lunch one day (if ringtimes allow), and nice areas to walk with the dogs nearby as well. Nominating Committee I am a bit tardy on getting my nominating committee pulled together this year. If you are interested in helping, I still need one member and one alternate. While most of the current slate of officers/board are running for their same positions, we do have some Board positions that need filled. If you would like to be on the Board, please let us know! We meet approximately once a month for a one-hour conference call. 2015 National Specialty Purina Farms Be sure to put http://www.2015flatcoat.com/ in your browser s favorites, and check back often for updates to everything from lodging to judges to Ring of Honor to vendors! The 2015 specialty will be held April 5-12, and should be a well-attended event since it is in the middle of the country. Volunteers are always needed, and this Specialty s planning committee likes to plan ahead so if you plan on going, and would be able to volunteer to help out, please sign up! MWFCRC donated some money to get this Specialty started. Some of our MWFCRC members are also playing key roles (THANK YOU) For instance, Mary Ann Abbott & Marijo Nootz are sharing in the Hospitality Committee and if you saw what they did for us at the 2010 National, just think what they will do in St. Louis! I hope to see you and your dog s soon, Kate Barton MWFCRC President Page 2

From Kate Barton: BRAGS Lola, CH SHR UCD Fireside LOL Always, CD, RE, JH, WCX earned her Rally Excellent title at the May 3rd Fort Wayne trial, and then her WCX the following weekend at the MWFCRC test. Lola has received several awards from our local obedience club this June Lola earned her U-CD, CD, RA, RE and WCX during the club s award year. CH U-CDX SHR Fireside LOL Always, BN, GN, CD, RE, JH, WCX ---"Lola" owned by Kate Barton finished her U-CDX on July 19. Then much to Kate's delight, Lola was invited to compete in the AKC Classic (obedience) in Orlando in December! From Diane Constable: The Oakwood 'Photo' litter had a great weekend at the UKC shows in Ann Arbor - Saturday, June 7, Nikon (Oakwood's Depth of Field) won Winners/Best of Breed over her brother Sabre and took a Group 2 -Sabre turned the tables on the second show and would up with Best of Breed and a Group 1 placement! (Sabre is Oakwood's Double Exposure owned by Rick and Ada Tishma and Fred Staugh who also shows him.) Cheryl Ertelt brought Daddy Cosby (UJJ,CA, SHR, RO2 GRCH GCH Fireside Stand-up Sitcom RE, JH, AX, AXJ, WC, CGC)...and brother Camo (Oakwood's Shoots from the Blind) up for the Sunday shows- Sabre wasnt entered., Nikon won over Camo the first show, with Cosby going Best of Breed for more Top 10 points! Second show, again a bit different.nikon took Best of Winners over Camo which finished her UKC Championship -and then went on to Best of Breed over her dad! But the fun didn't end there -she took a Group 1 placement, and went on to win Reserve to Best in Show! All that in the first 6 weeks of an 'official' show career! At the UKC Premier Shows June 13-14th, Nikon also tried dock jumping for the first time and came away with her first 'working' title - she is now UKC CH Oakwood's Depth Of Field UNJ (United Novice Jumper)! We are looking forward to more adventures with Nikon! Page 3

MORE BRAGS From Mike and Marijo Nootz: Mike Nootz and Lincoln earned their HRC Started title at the Backwater HRC test in June. Lincoln is now SHR Endeavor Cornhusker In the Deed the Glory WC Mike and Marijo have welcomed "Siren" into their family this year. Siren is from a litter of nine that their girl Truly had in March. Truly was bred to Melody Daniel's "Boone". Siren is officially Endeavor Doppler Storm Alert. From Sherry Augustine: Sherry is pleased to announce that Bode Exotic Black Diamond earned his CH at the tender age of 14.5 months. Bode took Best of Opposite Sex at the Michigan Sporting Dog Specialty in Monroe, MI and Best of Winner s at the Mahoning Shenango Kennel Club show in Canfield Ohio on August 3 rd to earn both majors and finish his AKC championship. OBITUARIES John Belknap, husband of Anne Belknap passed away June 9th. He and Anne bought their first Flatcoat in 1969 and were active in conformation shows and obedience, and bred several litters. They went for a period of time without a Flatcoat, but returned to the breed in the early 90s and currently have 3 from their own breeding. They bred under the Vines prefix. John and Anne had been members of the MWFCRC for many years. He was an avid proponent of the breed and loved recounting stories of his dogs and shows from 'way back when'. Donations are being accepted in his memory to Paws with a Cause. Kate Barton lost her bitch Pia over the Memorial Day weekend. Pia was a grand champion, earned her CDX and JH and WC way more, I think, than anyone ever expected her to do. Once I found her buttons, she showed me she could play my (dog show/trial/hunt test) games. Our household is much quieter without her, and this is weird. but the toys aren t getting chewed up anymore (one of her favorite pastimes)! In loving memory, GCH CH U-CH U-CD SHR Fireside Back Seat Driver, CDX, JH, WC, CGC January 1, 2005 May 24, 2014 Page 4

The awards committee created a unique acknowledgement for members who complete the requirements for each accomplishment. The awards are attainable for all levels of participation including new members as well as novice and seasoned competitors. Golden Whistle for the first advanced field title earned by a member to include SH and HR (UKC) and including advanced titles earned immediately following the inception of this award.
