Between the Bookends: Private Vegas (Large Print) by James Patterson (with Maxine Paetro) is the eighth book in his series, The Private Novels. Although Private Jack Morgan spends most of his time in Los Angeles, the location of his lucrative investigation firm, his pursuit of two criminals leads him to Las Vegas. Because of the numerous sub-plots throughout the novel, this book is a page turner and a quick read for a rainy day. Written with attention to historical detail and emotional content, The Boston Girl, a new novel by Anita Diamont, is a moving portrait of a woman s complicated life in 20th century America. It is a fascinating look at a generation of women finding their places in a complicated world. Addie is the daughter of an immigrant family living in the North End of Boston. In 1985 her 22 year old granddaughter asks her, How did you get to be the woman you are today? This book is that entertaining story. Watertower Square Certificate of Occupancy Is Issued! Yesterday, the City of Grinnell completed their inspection of our new Watertower Square residence building and declared it qualified for occupancy. After four years of planning and 15 months of building, this newest independent living option is now available on the Mayflower campus. Residents will start moving in today. By the time I again write this column, we are planning that these people will be Mayflower residents at Watertower Square: Gene & Kathy Herman; Jim & Arloene Yungclas; Catherine Rod; Montie & Suzanne Redenius; Stan & Gail Greenwald; Darwin Kinne & Suzanne Schwengels; Harry & Joanne Bolton; Jo Entwisle; and Chris & Judy Hunter. Welcome! Flu Shots: Are We Good Or What?! The seasonal influenza vaccine has now been administered to 100% of Beebe residents, 98% of eligible Health Center and South Village residents, and 100% of eligible Mayflower staff. We are doing our best to keep this campus well this winter. Now, please go wash your hands again! Dementia Support. According to the Alzheimer Association s 2015 Alzheimer s disease Facts and Figures, one in three seniors will die with some kind of dementia diagnosis. Further, Alzheimer s is the only disease among the top 10 causes of death in America that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed. About 40% of the U.S. population who are 85 or older are dealing with some form of dementia. Given this reality, Mayflower feels an obligation to provide support in this area. Our South Village is the only nursing certified and licensed dementia facility in Poweshiek County. Here are some other examples of our dementia orientation and support: Clergy Support A few years ago, we hosted the Grinnell Ministerial Mann Missive Association s annual geriatrics session here at Mayflower and provided valuable assistance to local clergy in dealing with parishioners who have dementia. Glen Campbell s Journey with Dementia Recently, we showed, (free of charge, including the popcorn and treats!), the recently-released movie, I ll Be Me. It depicts Glen s Good-bye concert tour of 151 shows while he and his family dealt with his dementia. Dr. Robert Bender Likely, Iowa s foremost geriatrician with memory support specialty, Dr. Bender will be on the Mayflower campus to discuss approaches for dealing with people who have dementia. Join us Wednesday, October 28 th ; 7:00pm; Carman Center (second floor of Health Center). Mayflower Healthcare Over the years, a number of Mayflower and community residents have moved from independent living homes to our healthcare support. Because of the expertise we have developed over the years through the operation of the South Village, numerous Mayflower staff administrators, nurses, aides, activity staff, social worker, spiritual care coordinator have developed expertise in providing support to people with different forms of dementia. Anecdote: A few years ago, a family asked us for support for a loved one who was diagnosed with a form of dementia. This person was living in another senior living community. The family was told that the facility was not able to provide healthcare assistance to this person. The party moved to Mayflower and thrived in our South Village for a number of years. In the words of Betty Friedan, Aging is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength. Bob Mann, Executive Director (bmann@mayflowerhomes.com)

UnLOCKIN LOCKING the Power of Philanthropy SESSION #2 WHAT IS BETTER THAN CASH? You are invited to Mayflower Community s series, Unlockin locking the Power of Philanthropy, which continues on October 21st and October 30th with a look at ideas for making gifts to your favorite charitable organizations without using your checkbook, a credit card, or cash. Doug Lockin, CPA, Mayflower Community s gift planning expert, will share ideas for alternative forms of giving to the causes you care about most. Doug will review two main ideas: how to save taxes giving assets other than cash, and creative plans that allow you to use cash and other assets in non-traditonal ways. Doug s presentations begin at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21st or 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30th. Both will be presented informally in the J & B Bistro and last less than one hour. Come early and stay after for refreshments and conversation. Contact Doug (515.210.6003 or lockin.dr@msn.com) with any questions about the subject matter. An RSVP is appreciated, but not required, contact Janet Neff in our office at 641.236.6151 or jneff@mayflowerhomes.com.
