Most deadly injury s during World War 1 Most deadly injury s during World War 1

What is the deadliest injury during World War1? In this book I m going to tell you what the top 5 deadliest injurieswere during World War 1. These injuries were some of thedeadliest causing the most deaths of soldiers. While I was writing this book I learned a lot of interesting facts and some very sad facts about what happened to many soldiers. This is a very good book to help us learn about what the soldiers went through and had to deal with during World War 1.

5 BAYONET Killed: 1700 First used: first year When used: hand to hand combat Bayonets were truly killers during the war. They might not be at the top of my list for the deadliest but they are still very deadly in their own way. So I m going to tell you why their deadly and what they did to soldiers during World War 1. If you want to know why these weapon is deadly I would advise you read this text.

BAYONET DEATHS In World War 1, 1700 soldiers were killed by Bayonets in 4 years. These weapons were usually on assault rifles. Every army had a different length of bayonet. The maximum length for a bayonet was 2 feet. EFFECTS When a soldier got stabbed by a bayonet the effects were usually deadly. The sharp pointy knife could go in smooth but if the soldier twisted it there would be a much worse wound. Some bayonets had jagged blades which would make a very bad wound. Also the bayonets had bacteria that could cause deadly infections inside the body. SPACE In a bayonet charge soldiers, could run from 1-3 km. A lot of the soldiers died from bayonet charges so they rarely happened because they are very dangerous. There were 15 shots in a clip; after it is empty the soldiers wouldn t have time to reload so they had no choice but to charge with their bayonet fixed. DEFINITION A bayonet is a blade that is attached to the barrel of a rifle to be used for close combat. Quick Fact Did you know that soldiers also used their bayonets to save their ammunition. Take Note Bayonets were the main hand to hand combat tool during World War 1. Did you know that the bayonet was a hunting implement for years before being adopted by the army? # 5 4 3 2 1

4 FLAMETHROWERS Killed: 2300 First apperence: the second year When used: to destroy towns, bunkers and to kill Today I m going to tell you why flamethrower were so deadly and what they did to soldiers and towns during World War 1. Flamethrowers killed a lot of soldiers and destroyed towns for only coming out 4 times during the war. If you want to learn more about these deadly weapons I would advise you to read this because you will learn a lot.

FLAMETROWER DEATHS During World War 1 flamethrowers destroyed 3 towns and killed 2300 soldiers during World War 1. They were killers in the war. Soldiers never wanted to tangle with them unless they were at a fare enough distance that they could snip the guy with the flamethrower. EFFECTS If soldiers were attacked by flamethrowers there more likely to burn to death if there no water around, but if they survived they would have third degree burns or higher. The soldiers would have a long and painful recovery because they didn t have the right medicine during the war. When we get burnt we think that hurts, just think how they felt with their whole body on fire. SPACE When a flamethrower was fired the flame could travel up to 50-80 meters in forty seconds and it burns down anything in its path. They make a big mess of everythingaround them. Flamethrowers had to be carried which could be very dangerous for the soldier carrying it. The Allies decided to build their flamethrowers inside some of their tanks like the M-4 Sherman. These flamethrowers could travel up to 100-150 meters in 1 minute. DEFINITION A flamethrower is a mechanical incendiary device designed to project a long controllable stream of fire. Quick Fact Did you know that flamethrowers only came 4 times during the war because there The Expert Says Flamethrowers were designed to destroy and kill things!!! Take Note Flamethrowers were very large and very heavy to carry. They were very dangerous and they still are so never play with them. # 5 4 3 2 1

3 VICKERS MACHINE GUN Killed:60,000 First appearance: the first minute of the war When used: to ambush soldiers Now I m going to tell you about what the Vickers machine guns did to soldiers during World War 1. Every soldier had their own reason to fear this gun during the war. They are very scary, deadly machines that could tear soldiers apart.

MACHINE GUN DEATHS In World War 1 the Vickers machine gun killed as many as 60,000 soldiers during the war. The Vickers machine gun is also known as the MG O8 Maxim. This gun was usually used for ambushing or to protect a bunker. That s how many soldiers died from ambushes. They are terrifying to come across during the war. EFFECTS SPACE This gun could fire 450-500 shells a minute and it could travel to a maximum of 4,500 meters. This gun had to be run by 6-8 men one to fire it, one to feed it ammunition and the rest to help carry it. The Vickers machine gun used a.303 inch British bullet. The bullets were usually on belts of a 1000. They would be in a metal box for safe keeping. Quick Fact Did you know that the Germans were the ones who started using the Vickers machine gun during World War 1, then the Allies turned the war around when they got some Vickers machine guns of their own and that turned the war around. Take Note The Vickers machine gun is strong enough to shoot right through a stone wall. The Expert Says The Vickers machine gun is a name primarily used to refer to the water cooled The effects of the Vickers machine gun are pretty simple buts it s still very deadly. When a soldier gets shot by a machine gun they are more than likely to be killed, but sometimes the soldiers would get lucky and the bullet would miss the main organs. When the Vickers machine gun starts firing you would want to find cover otherwise your dead. These guns are nightmares. # 5 4 3 2 1

2 MUSTARD GAS Killed: 1.2 million First apperence: 2 ½ years into the war When used: to scare out of hidouts Mustard gas was very deadly in World War 1 and its still deadly today. But I m going to talk about what it did to soldiers during World War 1. I will tell about how many soldiers were killed by mustard gas and the effects of it.

did MUSTARD GAS EFFECTS If soldiers were exposed in a gas attack and any part of their body was moist they will see blistering, rashes, epithelial tissue and the gas will also attack the corneas of the eye eventually causing blindness. In mustard gas 5% of it is sodium hypochlorite which causes blistering to the lungs causing a slow and painful death if not treated right. Soldiers that survive gas attacks there is a 90% chance that they will get Hodgkin s disease or cancer in the lymph glands. THE DROP During World War 1 there were a lot of gas attacks. It was mostly the Germans that did the attacks. They dropped 68,000 tons of mustard gas, the French dropped 36,000 tons of gas and the British dropped 25,000 tons of gas. The total amount of mustard gas that was dropped during World War 1 is 129,000 tons of gas. SPACE This gas has a very large range. It can travel up to 100-200 yards and it can travel 25 yards a minute. The can move very fast. No soldier could out run the gas during the war because it was way faster than them and they can t run forever. It would catch up to them in minutes. It s a nightmare. DEATHS Mustard gas killed as many as 1.2 million soldiers during World War 1. The Germans started using mustard gas. They would fly over in planes and drop canisters of gas on the allies. Quick Fact Did you know that mustard gases temperature is 58 Fahrenheit (14 Celsius). The Expert Says That mustard gas shouldn t have even been invented Take Note It is now illegal to use mustard gas during a war but some people break the rules. # 5 4 3 2 1

Had no 1 Shrapnel Killed: 6 million First apperard: in the first hour of the war starting when used: had no choice from explosion Today I m going to be telling you why shrapnel was so deadly especially during World War 1. So if you read this you might learn some interesting things about World War 1.

SHRAPNEL DEATHS During World War 1 shrapnel killed around 6 million soldiers. Shrapnel was a killing machine. Henry Shrapnel was the one who created this deadly weapon, the Shrapnel Shell in 1803. He was killed in 1842 by shrapnel from an explosion. Ever since it has been used as a weapon of war. EFFECTS/WOUNDS When a soldier got hit by shrapnel it wasn t smooth like a knife it was all rough and jagged the ripped big chunks of you out. Shrapnel is so strong it could slice a soldier s face off in one blow. Some soldiers survived shrapnel but the other weren t so lucky. It is silent but very deadly. SPACE During World War 1 shrapnel usually came from shells, explosions and it could travel up to 4000 yards and 250 feet per second cutting down anything in its path. When explosions happened and shrapnel went flying, soldiers never knew what hit them because it was so fast they couldn t see it coming. So soldier s best option was to drop or find cover and hope for the best. DEFINITION Shrapnel is when a bomb blows up and it sends surrounding items like wood, metal, nails, rocks and gun shells flying in all different directions. The Expert Says That shrapnel is the most lethal weapon ever created. Take Note Quick Fact Never play around with shrapnel because it is very deadly and a bad way to die. Did you know that shrapnel could be any like nails steel and even rocks? # 5 4 3 2 1

I thought Here are the criteria I used in ranking the most deadliest injury s during World War 1. The war: How many kill it had Their first appearance Why they were used What do you think? 1. Do you agree with how I did my ranking? If you don t, try ranking them yourself. Justify your ranking with data. You are aloud use my criteria or you can use your own. 2. Here are others to consider: Land mines, shell shock and trench foot. You can go and find out more about them. Should they have made my list? Are there others that should be considered on my list?
