The board members are all working hard to make the club a better place to work with our canine companions. We have a growing membership, many of whom pitch in and do whatever is necessary to help out. Working together we can all make KCC a great training club. 2008 was a great year - 2009 will be even better! WISHING ALL OF YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES A HAPPY NEW YEAR! 1

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY (ANOTHER POINT OF VIEW) I rescued a human today. Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly, and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn t be afraid. She stopped and read my kennel card. I hoped that she wouldn t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone s life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek, and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened. Her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today. (Thanks to Phyllis Bandi for sending me this article) 2

BRAGS From Dee Farrell: Note from Pebbles Dee Farrell is pleased to report that Pebbles earned her second leg in Novice Jumpers with Weaves at the Admiral Perry Obedience Training Club AKC agility trial at Edinboro on November 9! Pebbles scored a first-place 90 points! From Terri Chasser: Mackenzie and I competed in a CPE trial in Washingtonville, OH on 12/28/08. We had 3 qualifying runs and brought home 2 first place and 1 second place ribbon. We missed getting all first places by 4 seconds. We also earned our CL1-F title. Mackenzie had 3 clean, fast, perfect runs. I m so proud of my sweet girl. Many thanks once again to our awesome KCTC advanced agility instructors who prepare us so well for competition! From Ed Hanke: Ms. Sarah Wiggle Butt got her CGC and TDI last February without having to take the full compliment of classes and charmed everyone who she made contact with. Her winning ways have not decreased one bit since then and she has become a staple at Kane Hospital in Scott, where she is the only therapy dog at the present time. Likewise, her presence is anticipated by the Alzheimer and dementia patients at the VA (Heinz and Highland Dr.) Hospitals. Sarah is the only dog presently working the VA Hospitals. She was a star attraction at the Oakland VA Hospital for their Christmas luncheon and spends time each Friday at the Bethel Park Retirement Home. In addition she has made seven visitations with the Reading with Rover program conducted at Lincoln School in Mt. Lebanon, Crafton Elementary and Barnes and Noble in Robinson. It is with a great deal of pleasure that we let everyone know that all of these visitations exceed the requirements for the first level (50 visits) of recognition in TDI and makes Boykin Spaniel Sarah eligible for the title of TDIA. From Dave Wray: On December 12, 2008 Heidi competed in a CPE trial. She won colors 1 st place, wildcard 1 st place and jumpers level 3, 1 st place. From Betty Jean Maier: Heidi and Colby visit six different nursing homes as often as we can. Heidi has completed her 150 visits and has recently received her TDIAOV recognition from Therapy Dogs International. I am proud of her achievement. CONGRATULATIONS! My email address For anyone who has a brag or item that they would like included in the newsletter, my email address is mitzie- 123@hotmail.com 3

KCC HOLIDAY PARTY 2008 commended. It isn t everyone who can ring in the New Year and then have the fortitude to make it out the next morning. The incentive is to know that you have a head start on the year in an area near and dear to your heart and besides it was a good place to get rid of that extra dip and crackers! The party was held at Tambellini s in Bridgeville. It was a fun time for all delicious food and great company. Special thanks to Lucy McCloskey, Lori Ritchey, Toni Yurkovic, Dan Goldberg and Pam Lewis who helped make the party a success. 4 HAIR OF THE DOG PARTY From Ed Hanke I just wanted to thank all of you who came out to the Hair of the Dog party on Thursday morning to participate with likeminded people in doggie doings. For those of you who shared the leftovers from the night before in way of canapés and leftover food. Thank you very much. Those who made special efforts to come and have fun and fuel up for the coming year are to be SPECIAL THANKS TO: A big thank you to Ed Hanke who took the trouble to set up the goodies at the club and welcomed all who stopped in alone and with their canine companions on Thursday, New Years Day. It was a great way to start the year 2009! STEEL CITY TROOP OF THE DOG SCOUTS OF AMERICA A new year for the Steel City Troop of the Dog Scouts of America is ushered in with a warm welcome to those of you who are looking for something to do with your dogs to increase that bond and have fun at the same time. We will be conducting hikes and other activities over the next couple of months and invite you to come on out and participate. The cost per year is minimal and the opportunities are as many as the group can imagine. When was the last time you went hiking with a bunch of dog people with the prospect of achieving an award for your accomplishments? Do you know what geocashing is? When was the last time you got special privileges (Pirates baseball) with your dog because you were with a group of like minded people and well behaved dogs? Does your dog like to swim (think the Wave Pool)? Have you thought about going to camp with him? Is your dog a couch potato and could use some structured activity? There is so much more available when a group of Dog Scouts get together and plan out new and interesting activities. We will even have opportunities to do some community projects as well. Come on out. Ed Hanke (hanke42@hotmail.com) Dog Scout Leader

FEISTY FIDOS Does your dog have a bone to pick with other dogs? Are you tired of all the lunging at the end of the leash? This may be the class for you and your feisty companion we will teach you to better read and understand your dog s challenging postures and some of the reasons for these reactions. With the use of desensitization and counter conditioning, training, proper handling techniques and tools, along with practice and consistency, you will find that you can manage your feisty once more peacefully in the presence of other dogs and maybe even enjoy a walk in the park 7 week class limited to six dogs.
