The Official Publication of the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Minnesota, Inc. Editor s Corner Here it is already February, wow it goes fast. Seemed like hunting season just finished up. Now we have that 8-9 month wait until we get to do it again. Seemed to be a great year for pheasants no matter who you asked or where they went. I know I personally saw more birds this year than I had in the prior 5-8 years COMBINED. The new season of dog events are just around the corner. We kick off the year on March 1st for our Annual Awards Banquet and Dinner. Come and visit with old friends, meet some new ones, and honor the members, their dogs and their achievements. The field events kick off with a three day Walking Field Trial on April 11-13 at Kelley Farms. The following weekend will be our first Hunt Test of the spring. On the weekend of May 10-17 we will have our second Hunt Test of the spring. Later in May we will have our Spring Horseback trial over Memorial Day Weekend. In June it all wraps up with our Specialty Show on June 6th. Lots of things to do this spring. I encourage everyone to try to make an appearance at one or two even if you don't have your dogs entered. It can give you the opportunity to meet new people and get a first hand look at something while surrounded by people that can help explain what is happening. If your interested in more information, please get a hold of the proper contacts listed on page 2. They can answer questions you might have and make sure you get an event premium sent out to you. MEMBER HUNTING TALES Submitted by Gary Nehring I have a 2 year old male GSP (Fred) and we made it out to North Dakota twice this year. The first time wasn't much of a hunt, it was more of a shoot. We went out on opening weekend and ended up with 153 birds in 4 days. The dogs didn't get to hunt much but they sure got to do a lot of retrieving. Our second trip was better, as I was able to hunt by myself. My dog Fred and I filled out each of the 4 days that we were there, with many finds, points and retrieves. He is a very good bird dog!!! Although I haven't been doing a lot of bird hunting, I have been very busy hunting big game. The pictures of the Mountain Goat and the Bighorn Sheep are attached. Both of the animals were big enough to qualify for the Boone & Crockett Club all time record book. Hopefully, you can put the pictures in the newsletter to show the members what a old Life Time Member has been doing after competing in the Shorthair world. The Dog's Diary 8:00 am - Dog food! The Cat's Diary Day 983 of my captivity My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to make them sick, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. "bleep"! There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage. Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now...
