This marked the debut of a great adventure that helped me become the person I am now. My thirst for knowledge in purebred dogs drove me to get involved in many different aspects of the game. I would think that I am mostly recognized as a (former) handler. During my career, I had the chance to show more than forty breeds to their championships and as specials in Canada and the United States. I was most often identified with Sporting and Working dogs, nonetheless, I was fortunate to have won Best in Shows and specialties with dogs from multiple groups. Some of my most memorable moments as a handler were with Portuguese Water Dogs, for example, best of breed at Westminster KC in 1996, first PWD BIS in Canada in 1997, breed at the Greenwich Specialty in 2007, breed at Eukanuba in 2008, and BOS at the US National Specialty in 2009. I ve always been interested in becoming a conformation judge. I enjoy seeing or meeting great dogs, no matter what the breed. When you see a good representa- 2 2018 PWDCC 10th National Specialty www.pwdcc.org/national-specialty-2018

tive of a breed, it is normally easy to see what their function is. I am an approved judge for sixteen Working breeds and on permit for the remainder of the group. Besides my dog life, I currently work as a Marketing Manager in the glass industry. In my spare time, I truly enjoy spending time outside fly-fishing and going after the king of the rivers, the Atlantic Salmon. Finally, I would like to wish good luck to the exhibitors. I can assure you that I am looking forward to seeing your dogs in the ring. Enjoy the show! Sweepstakes Judge Kathy Maguire Murfreesboro, Tennessee Kathy Maguire began showing dogs in conformation at the age of 12 with a Brittany. She learned early on the significance of the statement Effort Equals Results and through perseverance finished her first champion completely novice-owner-handled. From that first show dog, she went on to breed/own and handle over 25 dogs to their championships and was also a very successful Junior Handler, qualifying for Westminster s LIMIT class. Her first home bred Brittany champion went on to become one of the top producing stud dogs in the history of the breed siring over 50 champions. Kathy also apprenticed under professional handler Tom Glassford in the late 1980 s. After a significant hiatus from dog shows, Kathy acquired her first PWD in 2005 and returned to the show ring, grooming and owner-handling her dogs. Breeding on a limited basis since 2007, there are presently 20 Patriot Champions, including Best in Show, multiple group winners, a Top Twenty winner, multiple Specialty winners and many happy family companions. Kathy served as past president of the Great Lakes PWD Club, has judged sweepstakes competitions at the Rio Salgado and PWD Club of Northern California Specialties, and enjoys mentoring fanciers in the sport of pure bred dogs. She has assisted on several National Specialty committees and is a strong advocate for transparency with regards to health and temperament in breeding programs. She presently lives in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and would like to thank the PWDCC for the invitation to judge at the 2018 National Specialty!! Booster Judge Rodi Hübenthal Olofstrom, Sweden In the last 30 years Rodi Hübenthal has, together with his wife Wera, bred Dobermann, German Pinschers, Miniature Pinschers, Whippets and Briards. They have about 140 dogs of their breeding earning Championships under the prefix "Picador" around the world. Rodi was the founder and Chairman of the Norwegian Pinscher Club and the Norwegian Briard Club and has held positions on many Breed Club Committees including Chairman of the Norwegian Dog Judges Association. Rodi began his judgeing career in 1969; and became a FCI all breed judge in 1992. He has judged all over Europe, Israel, America, Hawaii, South America, Barbados, Australia, South Africa, Japan, India, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. Recently he judged at Colare de Oro in Italy, Champion of Champions in Switzerland, Portugal, and Russia, the Junior Handlers Finals at Crufts, the World Shows in Copenhagen, Bern, Vienna, Helsinki and Milan and the European Winners Show in Copenhagen. U.S. Competitors Coming to Canada What documents are required for dogs entering Canada? People will need a valid passport at the border. Dogs may enter Canada if accompanied by a valid rabies vaccination certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian in either English or French, and dated at least 30 days prior to entry into Canada. The certificate should identify the animal as in breed, colour, weight, etc., and indicate the name of the licensed rabies vaccine used (trade name), including serial number and duration of its validity (up to three years). Please note that if the duration of validity is not indicated on the certificate, it will be considered to be valid for one year. (see www.inspection.gc.ca/english/anima/imp/petani/canin3e.shtml) Pet dogs over the age of 8 months that are travelling to Canada by air may require a health certificate by the commercial airline. Contact your airline carrier for additional information on their requirements. Unaccompanied pet dogs less than 8 months of age will require a health certificate. In the Ring Your dog will be judged against the Canadian Standard so be aware of some differences. Both the Retriever clip and the Lion clip are accepted in CKC shows. There are height disqualifications (see www.ckc.ca or www.pwdcc.org for the breed standard). There are a couple of things you should know before showing in Canada. While the procedures are basically the same as AKC there are some important differences. You will be called into the ring in order of your armband numbers. The steward and the judge will be checking your number against the judge's book so wait your turn or you will have the wrath of the steward come down on you. If you are showing a puppy, don't go away after you win your class because at CKC shows there is a Best Puppy in Breed award as well as Best Puppy in Group and Best Puppy in Show. Puppy in Breed is awarded after the Best of Breed, Opposite and Winners ribbons are given out. If your puppy has placed Best Puppy in Breed but it has won no points, if you wish you may choose not to compete in the Best Puppy in Group judging. If your puppy has placed Best Puppy in Breed and it has won points you will not loose your points if you choose not to compete in the Best Puppy in Group judging. You are obligated to stay for Group judging if your dog wins Best of Breed. Points are awarded at the Group level for those who need them and the number of points awarded is based on the number of breeds represented in the ring. I you miss the group judging you will lose any points your dog was awarded at the breed level. To achieve a Canadian Championship your dog must be awarded a total of 10 points under at least 3 different judges and one 2-point "major". What's required to Enter In order to have your points officially awarded, your dog must either be registered with CKC (http://www.ckc.ca) have an ERN which is an Event Registration Number (http://www.ckc.ca/aspweb/http/forms/pdf/150-14-50.pdf). This number must be applied for within 30 days of obtaining points or awards, in order to avoid cancellation. To apply for your ERN, submit a photocopy of your dog's U.S. registration certificate and the appropriate fee (which a this time is $58.85 Canadian Funds), along with a letter of request to the CKC. This information is included in all the Canadian premium lists you will receive. If your dog doesn't already have an ERN you will need to pay "listing fee" of about $8.56 per day until your dog has one. All this is explained on the entry form as well. Entry fees are payable in Canadian dollars. If you use a personal America cheque it must be made out for the full amount of the entry and no exchange will be refunded. You are urged to purchase bank drafts or money order payable in Canadian funds or use the charge card option offered on the premiums. CKC rules forbid unentered dogs in the show premises so if you need to bring unentered dogs to the show, enter them in "exhibition only". It will only cost $10.00 or so. Junior Handling In accordance with Canadian Kennel Club Rules, the Junior Handler does NOT have to own the dog being shown. Bringing U.S. Dog Food Pet food that contains beef, lamb, goat or mutton is not allowed entry due to BSE. Canada Customs does not allow opened packages of pet food containing chicken, turkey, pork or seafood to enter. Call Canada Customs at 1-800-461-9999 or 1-867-862-7230 to check on requirements for dog food crossing the border. www.pwdcc.org/national-specialty-2018 2018 PWDCC 10th National Specialty 7
