President s Blog June 2017 Hi everyone! This month I had planned to tell you what I learned at the Dogs NZ Domestic Dog Training Conference but, due a a flight cancellation, I wasn t able to get to Wellington. If anyone is interested in reading the conference presentation materials, you can find them here: http://www.dogsnz.org.nz/pdfs/ddt-presentations.pdf I can t even talk about how any insights I have had with my dogs as I have done little competitive training over the last month. Oscar has been recovering from his surgery and life has been busy. And, you know, I am okay with not doing much training. Like human sports, I am sure that it does my dogs (and me) good to take a break and just hang out Though, with our club show just 11 days away, I really need to start doing something. Hope is not a strategy - the Miracle Method doesn t work. Actually, it is not strictly true that I have not been doing any dog training. Three weeks ago, we welcomed Enzo into our family. Enzo is a 4 month old Australian Koolie and is, I am sure, one of the naughtiest puppies around. After a big trip from Australia and not liking outside New Zealand at all, he is now settling in and working out where he fits in our family. He has learnt not to mess with Oscar and that Maisie will play with him as long as he doesn t get over excited but he is a bit of a pest with Monty, our geriatric canine. Not surprisingly, he is spending a fair bit of time in his crate where he can t be a nuisance or destroy anything. For those who are interested, I am trying to follow Susan Garrett s Ruff Love programme with Enzo: http://susangarrettdogagility. com/2011/04/what-is-ruff-love-really/. While getting another puppy wasn t in the short term plan, we are enjoying him. Wishing you all a great month. Cheers, Jo

Unless you are actually working your dog, they must be on a lead held by a capable adult or shut securely in a vehicle or crate so that the dog cannot get its head out. Remember, there are kennels available for use at the back of the hall. BLUE RIBBON POLICY The Southland Dog Training Club has a Blue Ribbon Policy. If your dog does not enjoy the attention of other dogs or people, please tie a blue ribbon to its collar. The ribbon will identify your dog as needing a large personal space. It does NOT mean that your dog is aggressive. If you are the owner or handler of a very friendly dog, please respect other people and dogs and do not let your dog invade the personal space of any dog or person without invitation. Blue ribbons are available from any committee member REMEMBER! To toilet your dog BEFORE coming into the club building. If your dog messes inside it is YOUR responsibility to clean it up!

Ziggy did well winning many races and gained his FD title. Congratulations to him and his mum Karen Turner. Mac, Elsa, Basil, Banjo and even the crazy Chief all got a point or two at our Southland held tournament. With the weather having been so bad the last few weeks, I m thinking of cancelling training until after the August Jumpers show, to save damage to the grounds and also overtraining the dogs. NOTICES Fundraising Report We have had two very sucsessfull BBQ s at Animates and Mitre 10 and wish to thank those members who gave up their own time and training to help. It is a fantastic way to get out in the public eye to interact and promote our club as well as raising some all important finances for the club. Scratchy boards are a little slow at selling as these days I am not out and about, if any one of our members is keen to help out please feel free to get intouch with me. Also any suggestions of fundraising would be welcome. Hope all of you and your fur babies are staying warm I think you will all agree we are lucky to live in Southland given the weather the rest of the country is being dished with recently.
