EDUCATION SUBJECTS: An Ethogram, or Behavior Catalog of the Dog An ethogram is an inventory of behaviors common to a species. In this case, the ethogram of the domestic dog, created by Sue after observing and filming hundreds of dogs and hours upon thousands of hours of dog behavior. This workshop is the basis for anyone who evaluates behavior and temperament in dogs, whether at the shelter or in private training consultations. Behaviors are broken down into small units, and multiple examples of each behavior are given, both in normal speed and in slow motion. Learning to read these subtle and small behaviors are the key to truly understanding and being able to observe dogs. Assessing Dog-to-Dog Aggression A four-step procedure for evaluating dogs on leash as a way to determine whether or not they are suitable for interactions off-leash. We will look at dog-dog introductions, appropriate and inappropriate greetings, frustration, aggression, on-leash displays, matchmaking and compatibility. Off-Leash Dog Interaction--What is PLAY? This workshop will detail all the behaviors (from healthy to slightly risky to downright dangerous) a dog engages in when interacting off-leash with other dogs. We will also cover how to set up a play group to maximize benefits and lower risks. How to set up appropriate play groups that benefit all the dogs, how many dogs to have in a healthy play group, and what behaviors indicate when and if dog-play should be interrupted, plus how to interrupt, will be explained. A Peek at Public Dog Parks This workshop takes the participants on a tour of dog parks around the country. How much actual PLAY occurs? How much social conflict does a dog have to navigate in order to relax? What makes a good Dog Park? What makes a Dog Park particularly risky? Through extensive video footage of interactions, fights, and owner behavior, this workshop will define whether or not a dog is safe and/or appropriate for group dog play.
