GETTING READY It s time to have babies! Different animals do different things. For teachers' Polar bears make a den in the ice. It s nice and warm in there! Spiders make a sac for their babies. They put the sac on their web. Then, they go away. Mother spiders don t see their babies again. 4

For teachers' Birds make a nest, ready to lay their eggs. The male and female birds both look after the eggs. Hippos go to the river when it is time to have a baby. The baby is born underwater. It can swim straight away! 5 Go to The cuckoo lays its eggs in another bird s nest. Activities p.18, My Portfolio 1 p.25

For teachers' THE BIG DAY The BIG day is here! For many animals it s a wonderful time. Some crocodiles are getting ready to hatch. The first baby crocodile comes out of its egg and squeaks. This tells the other babies to come out, too! An ostrich mother helps her babies. She pecks at the egg so the baby can get out. 6

For teachers' Gorillas have their babies at night. The gorilla family all come to see the baby. They all help look after the baby, too! Baby gorillas drink their mother s milk for 3 and a half years. 7 Go to Activities p.19, My Portfolio 2 p.26

16 For teachers' The Lion and the Ostrich One day, a lion is sitting in a tree. She is on her own. She doesn t have any babies. She is lonely. She sees an ostrich mother with her four chicks. I want those chicks! she says. She jumps down and scares the ostrich mother away. Then, she takes the chicks to her den. The ostrich is very sad. She asks a jackal to help her. He goes to the lion s den and says, Those are not your chicks. You have got four legs, but the chicks have got two! I don t care. Go away! says the lion.

For teachers' So, the ostrich mother asks a mongoose for help. The mongoose goes to the den. He teases the lion and says, You are a very silly lion! You can t catch me! The lion is angry and chases the mongoose. She leaves the chicks on their own. The mongoose goes into his hole to hide. The lion can t catch the mongoose. She waits by the hole for the mongoose to come out. The mongoose comes out of another hole and runs away. The lion doesn t see him! She waits a long time. So, the mother ostrich goes to the lion s den and takes her babies. Clever mongoose! Clever ostrich! 17 Go to Activities p.24
