Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California Minutes of the General Meeting November 17, 2018 Location: Round Table Pizza on 46600 Mission Blvd., Fremont, California. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Halina Christie at 11:35 pm. President Johanna Primeaux took over shortly thereafter. The following members were present: Marianne Dub Kim Strassner Yvonne Samuelson Nancy Rynewicz The following board members were present: Rebecca Logsdon Trudy Kerr Halina Christie Patsi Nelson Anita Rasmussen Kathy Coon Johanna Primeaux Kathy Rosdail We had the following guests: No guests. Minutes: There was one correction: The sentence regarding the Raffle in the Treasury Report was removed and a new Ways and Means section was added. The wording was changed to show that Win and Olivia sold tickets and did not run the raffle. Otherwise, the minutes of the October meeting were approved. *Since we did not have a quorum at this meeting, voting on the pending membership applications was tabled until the December meeting. President s Report: We had a great year! Correspondence: Trudy said that she received a notice from the AKC closing out our October Rally Trial. We received a thank you for our donation to the ASSA Foundation. We will be getting the Sheltie pin soon, hopefully in time for the Holiday Party. Trudy received two letters from members regarding their membership status. These will be discussed during the Board meeting. Treasurer: We have money. Kathy R. brought the books for inspection for any member who wishes to review them. We made a nice profit at the Match and broke even on the handling seminar. We are showing a profit for the Specialty so far, but there are a lot of items outstanding. It is likely that we will break even, which is good news (the February show lost money).
We recently discovered that SSCNC s corporate status is listed as suspended and that it needs to be reinstated. This issue is being worked on. Rebecca said that this is a common occurrence. It involves a bi-annual maintenance filing that many corporations miss. The problem should be easily fixed. Membership: We will vote on Ann Baillet s application at the December meeting because there aren t enough members at the current meeting. Anita said that we need to have new members sign the Code of Ethics. Patsi volunteered to type out the Code of Ethics and the Bylaws. At the moment, they just appear as pictures/scanned images on the website. We need word documents. Kathy R. said that when you pay your dues you are confirming that you will continue to abide by SSCNC s Code of Ethics. We should put a sentence to that effect on the membership renewal form. Bulletin: As always, Rebecca is looking for input and submissions. If you have any photos from the Specialty, especially from Conformation, please send them for posting in the Bulletin. Patsi sent photos of the winners from Obedience and Rally for posting in the December Bulletin. Website: The website needs to be updated. The pictures and events posted on the site are very old. Kathy C. said that she hasn t been able to edit events. Alicia needs to be contacted. Alicia says that if people send her photos, she will update the website. Rebecca will send the photos that Patsi took of the Obedience and Rally qualifiers at the Specialty to Alicia. Alicia suggested adding AKC Scent Work and Barn Hunt photos, to show off the versatility of Shelties. May 2019 Specialties: We need to send in the paperwork by the end of November (it may need to be sent in as a hardcopy, not emailed). We need the contract from Gavilan. We won t be able to set up until Friday morning, the day of the stand-alone Specialty (May 3 rd ), so we may not be able to start the show until 11 am or noon. The Obedience and Rally Trial will need to start sooner than that. We will need to hire someone to help set up. We need to see how much it will cost. We need to let everyone know that they cannot set up until Friday. Overnight parking will not be allowed on Thursday night. There are nearby areas and store parking lots where you can park on Thursday. At the conclusion of the Friday show, we will need to take one ring down (we don t need an Obedience / Rally ring on Saturday). On Friday, May 3 rd, we will have Conformation, Sweeps, Juniors, Obedience and Rally, plus a raffle and a potluck. On Saturday, May 4 th, we will have Conformation. We may have Juniors (likely it will just be on Friday). The meeting will probably take place on Saturday. Diane Boross will be the Show Chair for Friday. Yvonne Samuelson will be the Show Chair for Saturday. We will need an Obedience & Rally Chair for May. The closing date will take place after the Nationals. We don t know who Gavilan s judges are yet. Gavilan will have Barn Hunt at their show.
Lots of moving parts and coordination going on. At least, having the double Specialty in May instead of February gives us some breathing room. October 2018 Specialty: Kudos to Julie Guttman for putting together the Conformation show (especially having never before competed in Conformation). Kudos to Patsi Nelson for handling the October and Rally Trials. Everything went like clockwork, as usual. Trophies: The trophies for the October 2018 Specialty were fantastic. We still need a few payments. Ribbons: The ribbons were lovely. Breeder Referral: Kathy C. said that we have a few ads. She was recently contacted by someone from San Francisco looking for a Sheltie between 2 and 8 years of age. Kathy C. turned him down because he takes his dogs to unfenced parks, but he may be a good prospective owner for someone else. Education: Yvonne called Brenda Miramon. She can t do a seminar until July. We need to look at the calendar and select a date. There is some interest in this seminar in the Collie community. Yvonne said that she got emails from directors of the Collie Club who seem to be very interested. Structure/ Function seminar this would probably just attract Sheltie owners. Agility Trial: The next agility trial takes place March 22 24, 2019 at Robertson Park in Livermore. The June agility trial takes place in Manzanita Park in Prunedale. Both shows have been OK d by the AKC. Special Awards: Lynn Azzopardi has sent the performance awards plaques to Larry. November 26 th is the deadline for the Challenge Trophies. Please bring any Challenge Trophies from 2017 to the Holiday Party so that they can be handed out to the 2018 winners. Library: The library holdings are currently sitting in Kathy R. s basement, except for the tapes (Halina has those). Some of the magazines got wet and had to be discarded due to mold. Halina urged all new Sheltie fanciers to look through the items in the library to get a feel for how the breed has changed. The list of items in the library is on the website. Ways and Means: We need donations to the raffle at the Holiday Party The members discussed the donation to the Gavilan raffle. Kathy C. said that she would get a wagon and fill it up with donations from the Club. Match and Workshop: The Match and Workshop take place in August, probably the 2 nd weekend (August 10 th ).
We will eventually need to start looking for judges (too early yet). Patsi volunteered to chair Obedience and Rally again. Hospitality: Diane Boross is the Hospitality Chair. Holiday Party: Kathy R. reminded everyone to send in their reservations for the Holiday Party. The party takes place Saturday, December 8 th at the Cattlemen s Restaurant in Livermore. It s the same room as before. Party starts at 11 am, service starts at 11:30. There will be a gift exchange and a raffle. There will be a short meeting to elect new members. A request from Cattlemen s and its staff regarding personal gift exchanges: Do not bring personal gifts to exchange to the party. Last year, there was such a pile of gifts on the floor that it was dangerous to the servers. If you bring personal gifts, leave them in the car. Old Business: Sheltie Rescue: This issue is still being investigated. The Board will discuss it at the following meeting. New Business: Show Chair Plaque: Kathy R. proposed that the Club purchase a small plaque to present to Julie Guttman at the Holiday Party to acknowledge a job well done. This is something that we used to do. Good Sportsmanship Award: This award is chosen by the members. We need some consensus on the nominee. Good of the Order: Butte County Fires: o Patsi said that she got an email from Nancy Gyes that was sent to Bay Team. The email has a list of ways to donate. She will try to send it to the Club. o Trudy said that one of the founding vets of Bishop Ranch is up in Butte County right now treating animals. o Patsi made a motion that the Club donate $100 to North Valley Rescue. Seconded and approved by the membership. o Club members may also want to make individual donations. Health Status of Members: o Amy Brastad: As many are aware, Amy has been ill recently. Trudy sent her flowers (a dog made of white flowers). o Leanne Buckler: She had a stroke. Trudy sent her a fruit basket. o Inge Skinner: She has been very ill. The Club will send her something. Golden Gate KC Show at the Cow Palace: o Who is going? Are there any volunteers to coordinate the bench? o Kathy R. recommended bringing the benching form to the Holiday Party.
Next Meetings: December 8 th SSCNC Holiday Party at the Cattlemen s Restaurant in Livermore. We need to call the meeting to order immediately. Adjourned: 1:10 pm Submitted by: Rebecca Logsdon, SSCNC Secretary Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California
