"Admaration" seems to continue his d omination of the Scottie ring (as well as against a ll breeds) in Great Britain, a dding still another CC and BOB at Edinburgh under Fred Dempster, who found his Bitch CC in Archie Maclaren's Viewpark CH. EASTERN NEWS by Robert A. Marshall 329 Newtown Road Wyckoff, New Jersey So much has been written about the relative value of the title Champion as it is conferred on British dogs versus our requirements that a stock-taking comparison might be in order. The AKC registers about 4500 Scottish Terriers every year and about 75 finish their title, a ratio of 1 for each 60 d ogs registered. LETTS WYNNE KENNELS, Reg. 17911 S. LaSalle Ave., Gardena, California Agent-Handler EDDIE BOYES 4916 Encinita Avenue Temple City, Calif. 91780 The British Kennel Club registers slightly under 200 Scotties per year and an average of 6 or 7 Champions are made up. This ratio comes to about 1 in 200 plus. However, I would suspect that the number of ~errtllanb 1Sennds QUALITY SCOTTISH TERRIERS Owner: MARTHA MERRILL 5339 Cartwright Avenue No. Hollywood, California 9\601 Phone : 213-TR 7-7407 Handler: GORKY VROOM PRESENTS AT STUD CH. unregistered pure bred Scotties is large in England and this ratio might be somewhat reduced. There are less than 30 Championship Shows held each year in Britain, over 600 in the United States, a logical disparity w h en you realize that the 600 shows serve an area of 3,500,000 square miles versus less than 100,000 square miles in Britain. The entries (actual number of dogs present) is greater a t most British shows, a lthough in recent years CC' s have been awarded a t shows with fewer thar1 20 Scotties competing, and our Fall STCA Specialty Shows draw comparatively the same number of Scots as the STCE Shows. The procedure of judging and the fact that a CC winner must defeat all members of his sex competing a t that show, Champions included, favor the American system in terms of ease in achieving a title. In addition, with fewer shows the selection of judges can be more keenly accomplished in Britain and the quality of the judging should be much better, so that few er undeserving dogs would be made up. There are, of course, many other factors involved in this question but I believe that it is safe to say that the American title can be acquired with greater ease, the opportunity to show is most certainly greater, and often the competition that a given dog is required to defeat in the pursuit of his title is not as keen. This, however, does not reflect upon the relative merits of our top w inners as opposed to those in Britain. I believe that the individual quality of the "good ones" on either side of the water is such that their title a nd show records are justly comparable. The title Champion is a meaningful one and serves to establish a mark of quality relative to the other dogs shown in competition. It cannot be u sed as a statistic for comparative purposes to "prove" tha t the breed is better off in one p lace than another, nor does it individually grade or rank one particular Scottie against another, that is, it may be incorrect to assume that a dog with his title is better than one without, or vice versa. The relative ease or difficulty with which the owner achieves the title for one of his Scotties is of course important to him, but is not reflected in the record books, since one "Ch." prefix looks just a s good as any other.
