More than just a market MARKET NEWS FOR TUESDAY 21 ST MARCH Manager s Mutterings Today s numbers; 575 cattle, 2,682 sheep and 136 pigs. In the prime cattle department today we had mainly first quality cattle forward, again highlighted by 10 Continental x Steers from Shortwood Estates, Lamport averaging over 205p/kg for his strong cattle and topping at 216p/kg. Top price was for David Madge of Sproxton with a Limouisn x Heifer realising 225p/kg. Considering the deadweight outlets dropped there prices 2-3p on the week and indicating further drops these are good results. Ben experienced another busy day, firstly having 226 weaned calves forward and topping at 1,070 for Bill Sim of Nether Broughton with quality Limousin yearling Steers and 870 for his Heifers. Bill was over the moon when he collected his cheque, within minutes of being sold. Harrison s of Coleorton, the best among the 110 strong store beasts with 21 month old Blonde x Steers to 1,175. We are now taking entries for our forthcoming 2nd Spring Store Cattle Catalogue Sale on the 4th April which coincides with the National Bazadaise Society Sale on the same day. Entry forms for both are available on the website www.meltonmowbraymarket.co.uk or give the office a call to book your pens. Tom reports a larger entry of sheep with some nice hoggs on offer, in particular. As numbers marketed nationally increase, there is a very large number of 50kg+ hoggs on the market and trade for these is becoming difficult. Ewes and lambs are starting to become more of a feature with some lovely sheep on offer this week meeting keen demand. Barrie had another busy day, first selling the 136 pigs forward then straight on to sell 147 baby calves, the biggest entry of the season so far. One or two of you may have seen me on the ITV Central News last week talking about the Avian Bird Flu, which shows no signs of going away. As a result we have had to reschedule our Rare Breed Poultry Sale on the 8th April and move it to the 6th May and hopefully this will go ahead. We will make announcements as soon as DEFRA update us. Slaughter Cattle CATTLE Auctioneer: Tim Webster on 07949 173180 Many deadweight outlets dropped there prices again by 2-3p on the week, whereas our trade increased by 5p on the liveweight.
