MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN To each and every member, their families, friends and interested parties It gives me great pleasure in writing this message for the forthcoming 2015 National Championship Show to be held in Bloemfontein on the 25th July 2015. There has been a great emphasis on socializing at the National and we will be honoured to have as many of the country s breeders attending this show, not only to see wonderful birds, but also to meet old and new friends that makes up this exciting hobby of ours. Many fanciers do not know how much time, effort and money goes into the organisation of a show and even more so to make sure that the annual National Championship Show is a success. The only way that we can show our appreciation is to make sure that we load the staging with great numbers of our birds. We also want to express our appreciation towards those members who put in a lot of hard work and gave up a lot of their valuable time to make this show the success we are certain it is going to be. Thank you to the Judges for accepting the invitation to judge the National Championship Show. Best wishes with the task ahead. To the long distance haulers we would like to say BE PATIENT on the roads, allow for frequent stops and refreshments for yourselves as well as for the birds. Yours sincerely Albert Olivier

MEET OUR JUDGES (in alphabetical order) Deon Davie (RSA) It is a great a privilege to be invited to judge my 9 th South African National Championship Show in 2015. I always enjoy judging Deon started breeding Show Budgies in 1982. He has filled all positions on Club level, Chairman, Secretary, Show Manager and Show Secretary and also on National Level, from BSSA President, BSSA Chairman, Administrator, Judges Chairman and Judges Secretary. Deon is a keen exhibitor, attending 3 to 5 shows per year. He breeds most colours and currently uses 50 breeding pairs. Although he likes exhibiting he also love judging and has judged abroad as well. He also enjoys the genetic side of this wonderful hobby. His aim is to breed quality budgies in all varieties. Deon will judge the following colours: Dark & Olive Green, Skyblue, Cinnamon Green Series, Cinnamon Blue Series, Opaline Green Series (Exlcl Grey Green), Opaline Grey, Lutino, Albino, Lacewing Senior Steward Dot Steward : Stuart Cracknell : Bob Cracknell Andre Scholtz started breeding show budgies in 2000. He loved breeding and keeping animals especially birds from a very early age on. He joined BSSA as a member in 2001. He is an active club member holding positions from Secretary to Club Chairman of the Free State Budgie Club and is currently serving on BSSA Management Committee since August 2013. He is also Secretary of the Judges Committee. Andre Scholtz (RSA) As a keen exhibitor regularly participating on shows he is currently focusing more on the breeding side of the hobby. Andre breeds most colours. But his favourite colour to judge is Cobalt, Grey & Grey Green. During the early years in the hobby, his breeding stock originated mainly from Molkentin and Albert Olivier. In 2006 he won Best Bird on Show at the Rare and Spangle show held in Welkom with a Light Green Spangle Cock. During the 2009 / 2010 season he lost his stud due to megabacteria and had to start from scratch building a new stud. He enjoys judging, showing and interacting with fellow fanciers and hopes to win the National one day. Says Andre: I am privileged to be asked to judge my first S A National Show in 2015 and would like to encourage as many exhibitors as possible to participate in this show. Best wishes and success to the exhibitors in Bloemfontein. Andre will judge the following colours: Cobalt & Mauve, Grey, Spangle Green Series, Spangle Blue Series, Opaline Cinnamon Green Series, Opaline Cinnamon Blue Series, Recessive Pied, Any Other Colour or Variety Senior Steward Dot Steward : Japie Nel : Russel Clements My name is Dino Pocecco, I live in Trieste near Venice. I am53 years old. I breed budgerigars for more than 25 years. I became an Italian judge of budgerigars and parrots in 2007. In 2012I passed the exam for Italian judge expert of budgerigars. I became W.B.O judge from 2013. I am the Italian delegate for the WBO for4 years. I have been secretary of the Italian budgerigar club (C.A.D.O.) for 4 years. In Italy I judged the Italian Championship and numerous specialist exhibitions on budgerigars. Dino Pocecco (Italy) The last year I judged in France and the club championship in Portugal (W.B.O.) I am very honored and very happy to judge in South Africa Dino Pocecco will judge the following colours: Light Green, Grey Green, Violet, Double Factor Spangle, Opaline Grey Green, Opaline Blue Series (Exl Grey), Yellowface, Greywing, Clearwing, Yellow &White Senior Steward Dot Steward : Steven Botoulas : Bakkies Cronje

THE BUDGERIGAR SOCIETY OF SOUTH AFRICA GUIDELINES TO BE READ IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SHOW SCHEDULE When entering birds in their respective classes, the schedule is very specific in that the colour or variety indicated is the colour or variety allowed in that class. This is particularly so in respect of the popular colours and varieties. The same cannot be said for the composites ; which means that they combine a number of mutant varieties all in one bird. The more common ones e.g. Opaline Cinnamon, have their own classes but the problem arises when the exhibitor is confronted with, for instance, a Spangle Yellowface. Does it go in the Spangle class or the Yellowface class? This has always been a problem for exhibitors and officials alike. To try and alleviate the problem, a form of hierarchy was suggested and this was approved at the judges seminar held in Orkney in 1997. This action was subsequently approved by Management Committee at a meeting held on Monday 24 th November 1997. The hierarchy order of merit is: SPANGLE (INCLUDING DOUBLE FACTOR) DOMINANT PIED RECESSIVE PIED YELLOWFACE GREYWING, CLEARWING, YELLOW & WHITE A.O.C. or V. What this means in reality is that any bird that carries the Spangle factor and also the variety below it i.e. Dominant Pied, must be entered in the Spangle class. Thus the following will all be entered in the Spangle class, either Green or Blue series, or Double Factor: NORMAL SPANGLE CINNAMON SPANGLE OPALINE SPANGLE OPALINE CINNAMON SPANGLE DOMINANT PIED SPANGLE YELLOWFACE SPANGLE YELLOWFACE DOUBLE FACTOR SPANGLE (In the Double Factor Spangle class) A.O.C. or V. Ranked second on the hierarchy is Dominant Pied and therefore the following must be entered in the Dominant Pied class: NORMAL DOMINANT PIED CINNAMON DOMINANT PIED OPALINE CINNAMON DOMINANT PIED YELLOWFACE DOMINANT PIED ALL CLEARFLIGHTS Next on the ranking is the Recessive Pied. The only composite we can have here is the Yellowface and as Yellowface is below Recessive Pied, the bird must be entered as a Recessive Pied. Please note that the so called odd eyed Pieds, those having one normal eye and one plum coloured eye without the iris ring, must be entered in the Dominant Pied class. Fourth on the list is the Yellowface which means that all varieties in the Blue series that carry the Yellowface factor, must be entered in the Yellowface class, unless they are combined with Spangle, Dominant or Recessive Pied varieties in which case they must be entered in the respective Spangle, Dominant and Recessive Pied classes. Birds known as Australian Goldenface, both single or double factor, must be entered in the Yellowface class. Birds known as Rainbows, which is actually a composite Opaline Whitewing Yellowface/Goldenface Blue, must be entered in the A.O.C. or V. class. Please remember that should you have difficulty in deciding in which class a particular bird should be entered, do not hesitate to ask a more experienced member for advice.
