A Letter from our Club President Well, spring is somewhere and with a New Year beginning, I am hoping that our upcoming year and activities will be productive and accommodating for all that takes part in our sponsored events. Our club has had several successful events since the first of the year. I would like to thank everyone who volunteered and participated in our recent club events. Our Specialty was held during the Tarheel Circuit on March 22. Although we have been partnering with the Raleigh Kennel Club for a long time, it was disappointing that our entries were not as vibrant as has been in the past, but I think that there might be some type of change in the near future that may boost the entries. We held two meeting since the first of the year, and we appreciate those who were able to attend. I would like to encourage more membership attendance at these meetings in the future because that is one thing that will keep our club growing and our membership is what makes the TWC exist and be successful. There are some upcoming events and meetings in the next few months that you might want to consider and the club would appreciate your support. There will be a retrieving practice in April, in May there will be retrieving ratings, pigpicking, and in July there will be an agility trial. Please read your newsletter for details of our upcoming events and feel free to contact the appropriate individual for volunteering with any of these events. Thanks for your support, and thanks for your membership. Jack Sappenfield II A Letter from our Rescue President It has been another busy month in rescue, with a number of shelter rescues needing special attention. Happily, we have added a few more foster homes to our approved list which has allowed us to accept additional owner surrenders as well as critical shelter situations. We will also have an Expo, which starts at 10AM, so that you can learn how to introduce your dog to a variety of dog sports. A Club meeting will be held around 1PM in the cabin. Agility Trials July 18-20 Our main fundraiser will be held Friday through Sunday, July 18-20 at the Bon- Clyde Learning Center at 3030 Lee Ave. in Sanford, NC. We need to have at least 5 club members there all during the show hours (8AM through around 4PM). Contact Helen if you can help. Letter from the TWR President Continued We held our annual Fun Hunt at Rosi and Ross Adams' farm this past month and it was very well attended. Many rescues had their first experience with birds and all had a wonderful time. There is definitely some bird dog talent out there and you may see some of them pursuing it further. You could just see the smiles on the dogs faces after they returned from the field. Many had not been able to run freely in a large field, much less find birds, so they were in doggy heaven. Please continue to keep our rescues in mind as you are talking to admirers about potential Weimaraner adoption as we have a number of wonderful dogs seeking their forever home and, of course, we are always in need of loving foster homes. Zeus s Story: We want to thank those of you who helped in our urgent plea for financial sponsorship of Zeus, a young male in a Piedmont area shelter who had a huge tumor on his back leg and is HW positive. We are happy to report that our fund raising successfully covered his tumor removal and the start of HW treatment and he is doing very very well. Pre-Op Post-Op Toni Sweetland President Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue The Tarheel Weimaraner Newsletter March 2014 2

Rescue Report: During the months of February and March, TWR took in 8 new dogs and placed a total of 11 those are good placement rates for this period! Always happy and thankful when more go out than come into the program! We were fortunate to find homes for some long-time residents: Trola was fostered for 3 years and 2 weeks she s 11 years old now in her forever home in South Dakota! Casper was fostered for 1 year she s 10 ½ years old now in her forever home in Virginia! A prime example of the joyful nature of some of these dogs Casper s grin - She s home!!!! Thanks for your continued good thoughts and support! Christine Flock, TWR Secretary Rescue Wine!!! Check it out your choice of red or white wine, with proceeds to benefit Tarheel Rescue! Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue is offering our very own, trademarked Amazing Grays wine. It will be sold for $16.00 per bottle and for a discounted price of $14.00 per bottle if a case of 12 bottles is ordered. The case can also be mixed half red and half white. All proceeds will go to Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue. The wine is available in red and white and usually retails for $20.00 per bottle. Meritage : This wine has a medium-bodied flavor profile with dark berry and plum that blends with hints of spice and mocha. A pleasant smoky component is also noticeable on the nose and makes this wine the perfect companion to grilled meats, game bird, and heavy cheeses White Blend Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are blended to create this medium-bodied wine offering notes of lemon, citrus and peach with melon and subtle oak flavors. Enjoy chilled on its own or with grilled vegetables, fish or chicken. Riesling Meet our newest addition. For those that enjoy a wine with a little more sweetness we added a Riesling. This slightly sweet Riesling has loads of fruit with tropical notes, peach, pear with a nice smooth finish. Perfect by itself or try it with sushi, shellfish or lighter fare. Contact Rosi Adams if you would like to buy some of this wine! The Tarheel Weimaraner Newsletter March 2014 3

TWR License Plate Frame The cost is $10. To order, contact Christine at cmflock@roadrunner.com as they are not on the TWR website yet. The Tarheel Weimaraner Club meeting of March 22, 2014 was called to order by President Jack Sappenfield at 7:35 pm. The dinner meeting was held at the Backyard Bistro in Raleigh. Present were members: Carol and Charles Parron, Cindi Caravati, Eric, Stacy and Jamie Libow, Lucy and Jack Sappenfield, Helen Sanderford, Kathy Page, Rusty Jenrette, Sally Feltner, Barbara and Rick Yates, and Betta Breuhaus. Guests: Betsy and Buddy Amos, Tammi Byers, Mark, Robin and Ashley Stowell and Heidi Warren. The minutes of the Jan. 5, 2014 were presented for comment. Motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes as published in the TWC newsletter and carried. The President welcomed the members and guests and expressed his desire to inspire members to service to the club and success in their activities with their Weimaraners. The Secretary Rusty Jenrette reported letters from AKC that the results of the recent hunt tests had been recorded. The Treasurer Helen Sanderford reported that the club had a balance of $16,986.44. Dues notices will be sent out in April and are due July 1. Please pay yours on time. The Show Committee reported that the Specialty was held today with the Raleigh Kennel Club. A financial report cannot be made until the figures are reported to TWC by Raleigh Kennel Club. There was discussion of the possibilities of changing our Specialty from the classes of the Raleigh Kennel Club to another kennel club vs. going back to holding an independent Specialty vs. other possibilities. The Committee will report back after investigation. The Ratings Committee reported that retrieving practice will be held at the Parrons on April 25 and 26 and May 3. Retrieving ratings test will be given on May 4, same location. The Tracking Committee Chair Cindi Caravati reported that the February tracking tests had been successful. Discussion focused on the possibility of finding alternate grounds in a time where it is not easy to find both adequate grounds and owners willing to allow the use of their land. The Snow Hill location is unique in that a fox hunting group cooperates in allowing the individually owned parcels to be used so these owners are already used to the idea of allowing use of their land together. The Hunt Test Committee Chair Betta Breuhaus reported that the TWC Hunt Tests in February were filled and some had to be turned away. There was discussion of possible over working of judges and The Tarheel Weimaraner Newsletter March 2014 4

also of their horses, of helping the Charleston club hold a hunt test, of TWC s holding two hunt tests, and possible alternate grounds. There were no completed membership applications to be read. Kathy Page reported for Rescue that for the calendar year 2013 Rescue had taken in 103 dogs including 10 mixed breed pups and had 90 adoptions. In calendar year 2014 through 3/22, 14 Weims have been taken in by Rescue and there have been 15 adoptions with one more expected in the next couple of days. There was no old business and no new business. A vote was held on the membership applications read at the November meeting. Paula and Joe Adkins, Tammi Byers, Robin and Mark Stowell and Ashley Stowell were voted into membership. The next meeting will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Parron s at about 1 pm. There will be an Expo in the morning, schedule to be announced. The BBQ will be served about 3 pm. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 pm. Despite an early starting time, all of our competitors were in excellent form. We had a small Sweepstakes showing, but our judge, Lonnie Schwab challenged the 4 exhibitors. He had them do a down and back AND an L before having winners do a down and back together. Our breed judge did a great job as well. This show would not have been possible without the assistance of Cindi Caravati for organizing and trophy distribution, Lucy Sappenfield for dinner/meeting arrangements, Eric &Jamie Libow for creating the unique BOS & BOW trophies. And an extra shout out to Jack Sappenfield for designing the oneof-a-kind Best of Breed trophy. The Tarheel Weimaraner Club acknowledges and thanks the following for their generosity for providing Trophies, Rosettes and prizes for our Specialty Show, Sweepstakes and Obedience classes: Ross & Rosi Adams, Betsy & Buddy Amos, Cindi Caravati, Sally Feltner, Mary Lee Garfield, Rusty Jenrette, Eric, Stacy, & Jamie Libow, Carol & Charles Parron, Jack & Lucy Sappenfield, Linda & Gene Schilling, Gretchen & Stewart Stevenson.
