The Lost Coast H O W L E R April 2018 Editor: Tina Moulton www.lostcoastkc.org www.facebook.com/lostcoastkennelclub PO Box 6808, Eureka, CA 95502-6808 LCKC BOARD OF DIRECTORS Officers: LINDA BERGSTROM President JILL OTTO Vice President KRIS SMITH Secretary PATTY MENDES Treasurer Members of the Board: Sara Borok Cathy Wright Debbie Tull Next meeting: Tuesday, April 17th at the The Clubhouse at The Meadows (Address is at bottom of page) Join Us! Everyone is welcome! BOARD MEETING 6:30 PM REGULAR MEETING 7:OO PM Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month, alternating between the Adorni Center in Eureka 1011 Waterfront Drive, in odd numbered months and at The Clubhouse at The Meadows, 2520-90 Hubbard Lane, Eureka in even numbered months. No meeting in December. President s Corner Oh, hi, your President is not entirely sane at the moment. Turns out sleep deprivation takes a greater toll as you get older. Who knew? I am crazy over the moon delighted to report that I am dogless no longer, and a merciless fluffy little tyrant has entirely stolen my heart and taken over my life. I promise to be more effective at, you know, pretty much everything once I'm sleeping through the night again or at least mostly through or at least most of the nights. (That does happen eventually, right? I remember that correctly, yes? One lives on faith and puppy snuggles. Fortunately they both have great power.) Carrying an item over from last month: We still have some tasks for the summer show that need volunteers. If you can spare a bit of time between now and the show and most especially during the show and the days immediately surrounding it we would love to hear from you! To find out more, come to any club meeting, or to any Event Team meeting; or you can contact Show Chair Cathy Wright (cathlynwright@hotmail.com) or myself (lcbergstrom@gmail.com) and we'll hook you up. Many thanks to everyone who stepped forward with award sponsorships! Y'all rock. As always, keep an eye on LCKC e-mails as they roll into your Inbox for more information and specific updates and requests. Linda LCKC_Apr_2018 1

Have you heard? From Linda Bergstrom: I am thrilled and delighted beyond measure by the addition to my household of Captain Wigglebutt on Monument Mountain, a Miniature American Shepherd puppy bred by LCKC member Beverly Chang who will co-own him with me. Captain is destined not only for the conformation ring but also scent work, rally, obedience, barn hunt, tracking, and if all works out well, eventually certification as my diabetic alert Service Dog. He is an energetic, intrepid ball of mischief and joy, ready to make friends with the world and explore every corner of it. Socialization opportunities welcome! From Marilyn Cottrell: Bayley my silly goose got her Novice Tricks Title at HumDogs on April 16 th. Yay! LCKC_Apr_2018 2

Have you heard? From Sara Borok: April 7-8, Chris Irvin and I went up to Sisters, Oregon to compete in the Pacific Sled Dog and Skijor Association s, Mush With Out Slush fun run ( sled races but on wheels). Chris with her Neon and Chablis came in 4th in the 2 dog 2 mile race on scooters and I didn t come in last with the 4 mile 2 dog on scooter race! Happy 14 th birthday, Wizard!!! LCKC_Apr_2018 3

MINUTES OF THE LOST COAST KENNEL CLUB March 20, 2018, The Adorni Center, Eureka BOARD MEETING: Called to order by President Linda Bergstrom at 6:37 pm. Present: Linda Bergstrom, Sara Borok, Beverly Chang, Cheryle Davis, Patty Mendes, Beverly Morgan Lewis, Tina Moulton, Jill Otto, Kris Smith, Debbie Tull, Cathy Wright, and guest, Joan Carpenter. Minutes of the Last Meeting: MSAC to approve as published. Report of the Treasurer: Patty distributed the profit and loss statement and reported on our bank balance. Discussion of income/expenses for the January obedience/rally trials, and for the Scent Work trials in February. Firm numbers next month. She is getting the accountant information from Chris Irvin for the IRS tax filing. Unfinished Business: Agility trailer maintenance Beverly Chang will co-ordinate the effort to identify problems and get them addressed. New Business: It s time for a new club laptop. Linda will consult with a knowledgeable friend regarding the best options. Discussion of our needs. The scent work secretary has her own software; if we get scent work software, we should work with her. The Board meeting was adjourned at 7:05 pm. REGULAR MEETING: Called to order by President Linda Bergstrom at 7:05 pm. Present: All of the above plus Marilyn Cottrell, Suzi Martin. Minutes of the Last Meeting: Tina tried to distribute the minutes via email, but they didn t attach, so people have not had time to read them. They will be approved at the next meeting. Report of the President: Nothing specific we are in transition between events. Report of the Secretary: Kris said the mail was mostly checks, which were distributed to the appropriate officers and committee chairs. Report of the Treasurer: Patty reported on our bank balance, and said we have enough to get started on show expenses. Report of Committees: Practice: Scent Work on March 10 was well attended, lots of new people. The first regular practice for conformation, obedience, and rally will be April 15, followed by May 6 and 20, June 3, 10, 17, and 24. Scent Work practice will follow each regular practice. Newsletter: Tina said it will be coming out soon, and she can accept contributions for a few more days. Website: Tina will add a tour guide for people coming for the show weekend, or other events. Yahoo Group: It is updated as of last month. People who are not signed up for it can request via lostcoastkc@gmail.com. Membership: Will be updating the list soon. Event Team: Last meeting was March 10. Waiting for the show premium list to come back for corrections. Discussion about having a Judges Liaison, and what is needed for the Judge Selection process. We need someone who is a good communicator to keep the Board in the loop. We could put a hold on new hires until we can discuss how to go forward. Contact Linda with suggestions for improvements. Linda will be the Judges Liaison at the shows. January Rally/Obedience Trials: Sara said the last financials are not in yet, but we probably didn t make much. Discussion of some questions regarding identifying income and expenses. Scent Work Trials: Cathy read an email from the trial secretary, Debi Best. She will be sending LCKC about $4200 (we have some expenses coming out of that, but will have about $3000 in profit). Debby is changing her software to make things more streamlined. She was very complimentary, and called the LCKC members an incredible team. Discussion of what went well and what could improve. We discussed the possibilities of having another scent work trial this year, in the fall. There is a need for more trials in the West. MSAC (Deb S/Jill) to form a committee to look into a Fall 2018 Scent Work Trial. B-OB Shows: Beverly Chang went over the trophy sponsor list. Toy and Non Sporting each need one Group sponsor, plus some smaller ones. Suggestion to include the amounts of the sponsorships on the request letter. It would be nice to include a photo of the winner on the thank-you letters. Patty had a suggestion of using a pony cart to bring in the BIS judges, and she passed around a photo of a pinto pony and a nice cart. The owners would do it free, but would need lodging. Thanks to Marilyn Cottrell, who gathered and assembled information for a travel guide, which will go on the website. Deb T will do some editing. The Coos Bay club will also have one for our website, for people who will be going on to those shows. Cathy introduced a Judges letter and questionnaire for Linda to use as Liaison. Vendors Tina said we have 6 or 7 so far. Dart Dog will not be there. Savvy Dog will be the general. We will invite another portrait photographer. No coffee vendor as yet, she will try some locals. A repro vet will be there, Bulldoggies, Lions Club. Publicity Tina will do a poster again, also a new club brochure. Discussion of marketing ideas, such as finding local artists who might want to design a logo for the show, for the exposure. It was pointed out that artists get tired of doing LCKC_Apr_2018 4

things for free for the exposure. Cathy showed the pens which she ordered. She will order medallions for the Pee Wees. Agility Trial and Barn Hunt: The application will be approved soon, waiting for some club info. Beverly is all set with judges, applications, grounds, caterer, and ribbons. Need someone to help with raffle and judges hospitality. Patty will order the dumpster, Beverly will order the porta potties. She still needs to order the new jumps which were approved by the club, and she needs a publicity person. Discussion of having a Puppy Play Land on Thursday, which introduces young dogs to basic equipment. It would be in a separate ring, and people can go in and practice, we would sell tickets for a specified amount of time each. MSAC to have a Puppy Play Land on Thursday of the Agility Trial weekend. Election of New Members: Sandy Svendsen, of McKinleyville, and Joan Carpenter, of Eureka, were unanimously elected to membership. Unfinished Business: Donations: Tabled. Bark for Life: Tabled New Business: none Announcements: none The regular meeting was adjourned at 9:05 pm. Respectfully submitted by Kris Smith, LCKC Secretary LCKC_Apr_2018 5
