PART 3 WIERINGERLAND SHOW NOVEMBER 2006 Text: Jan Willem Hondelink. Photos: Rob van der Steen The traditional Wieringerland Show took place in Holland last November. Besides a selection of rabbits, cavies, rodents, poultry, pigeons and ornamental fowl, there were also many geese and ducks. The reason for this: the Wieringerland Show has a unique concept for penning waterfowl, which is certainly worthy of imitation. All ducks and geese are showed in spacious pens and on grass sods. (see picture above). Birds of the same breed and of the same owner are housed together in the same pen. Still they are judged one by one. At penning, each bird gets an extra leg ring in a different colour and the colour of that extra ring is noted in the judge report, so the public can recognise the described bird. On the basis of some photos, made by Rob van der Steen, one of the organisers of this Show, we will walk you through the penned waterfowl: There were Pomeranian geese in grey (photo right) as well as some splendid pied (foto next page).
Left: Pied Pomeranian geese Ten Toulouse were entered. The photo (right) shows what an imposing birds they are. Chinese Geese are smaller than African Geese. They were shown in the grey variety (photo right above) and the white variety. In my humble opinion the white Chinese are the most elegant. (Photo above left)
We admired the blue Steinbacher geese. (Photo left) A Steinbacher always has a black bill bean, as you can see in the picture. This as different from another blue goose that I breed, the Frankish goose, which has a horncoloured bill bean. Czeg geese are compact birds with a short, firm neck. (Photo left) The African goose is very imposing due to its lenght and posture. (Photo below right) Sebastopol are not often seen at the Dutch shows. This is because it is hard to keep them clean and in show condition. There are two main feather types; the curly feathered Sebastopol and the smoothbreasted geese, with non-frilled breast feathers. (photo left)
The American Pekin is only slightly upright. (Photo left) This as opposed to the German Pekin, which showes an almost upright carriage. The Rouen also comes in two types; the heavy English type (photo right) and the French type called Rouen Clair with a slightly upright carriage and paler groud colour. The Orpington Buff drake has the characterestic dark brown head. The ducks are singlecoloured buff. (Photo links) Mees colour Indian Runner is a rather new colour variety in Holland (Photo below)
Hook Bill ducks are very rare, even in Holland. (Photo above) Finally a white Call Duck drake that was Best in Show with Excellent/97 points.
