DOHNE MERINO SOUTH AUSTRALIA Breeding and feeding KEY TO FERTILITY BY CATHERINE MILLER F OR any prime lamb business, the financial equation is quite simple the more lambs born each year the more lambs there are to sell. And South East SA farmers Neville and Celia Kernick are heading in the right direction, lifting their marking percentages at Rangefield, Field, by 14 per cent. Last year for the first time they even had to sell a few of their extra lambs as stores. The enthusiastic couple marked 127pc lambs from close to 400 Dohne ewes, run as a self-replacing flock, and 126pc for each Dohne ewe joined to White Suffolks, from a mob of 480 ewes joined. Mrs Kernick is among more than 1700 sheep producers across Australia who have participated in the Lifetime Ewe Management Program estimated to represent between seven to 7.5 million ewes. The Australian Wool Innovationfunded program delivers six handson training sessions a year to small groups over a two-year period. Mrs Kernick says the knowledge gained from the local group of eight Field farmers has really helped them manage their pregnant ewes to minimise foetal losses. It has emphasised the importance of condition scoring ewes at critical stages of the year and feed assessments post-100 days of gestation, to ensure the nutritional needs of their ewes are being met. Last year we lost 27pc from scanning to weaning but this year the difference was only 9pc, she said. It has really taught me it is about the year-long management of the ewe and making sure your ewes are in the right condition score at the right time of the year. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to finetune their sheep enterprise. Another key to their flock s improved fertility has been through genetics, buying rams with high maternal reproductive rates. Their figures have been supplied since 2006 by their local stud breeder at Coonalpyn and the Kernicks have followed them closely in their ram selection. We keep an eye on all the Australian Sheep Breeding Values but in particular are looking at high eye muscle depth in an attempt to lift our dressing percentages, high weaning weights and the maternal reproductive rates, Mrs Kernick said. Before sale they identify those rams with the desired figures they are interested in and then compare them to the Lambplan percentile tables. Then they assess them visually on sale day. Mrs Kernick said they will continue to push as high as we can with our reproductive rates while still closely managing our ewes. The Kernicks crop 450 hectares but sheep are a major part of the farming business on their 950ha property. In 2006 the couple bought their first Dohne ram and have not looked back, gradually upgrading their Merinos to a pure Dohne flock. They are really pleased with the high fertility, extra growth and carcase attributes of the breed. The top Dohne ewe lambs are retained for breeding purposes and the older Dohne ewes are mated to White Suffolks. The Kernicks have been wet-dry scanning since 2008, and four years ago decided to go the extra step differentiating singles and multiples. This enables them to manage multiple-bearing ewes preferentially to single bearing ewes, and increase the fertility of future selfreplacing ewes. Their lambing season starts in late March and the aim is to have all the lambs sold by the end of October before grass seeds become a problem. We like to start lambing around March 26 so we have lambs to sell early in the season, but if we come forward any earlier we find the ewes are lambing in hot weather, Mr Kernick said. We currently have a six-week joining but intend to reduce this to five weeks so all the lambs are more even for sale. Their aim is to turn off 18- to 24-kilogram carcase weight Dohne and Dohne/White Suffolk lambs at five to six months. At weaning the lambs are split into heavy and lightweight mobs, 1342588DOH2014 Peter Hyland, Dubbo NSW Ph: (02) 6887 7276 Mobile: 0418 410 487 Fax: (02) 6887 7276 Email: p.khyland@bigpond.com Ram Sale 9th September 2014 www.dohnesheep.com Breeding for the Future Rams available anytime 12 July 2014

SOUTH AUSTRALIA DOHNE MERINO with Elders agent Bryan Biddle doing the marketing when they reach their target weight. Due to the higher dressing percentage, we are finding we are getting paid similar money per head for our Dohne lambs as our White Suffolks, Mr Kernick said. He acknowledges their wool cut is slightly lower than when they bought Merinos to breed prime lambs, but believes it is easily compensated for in higher fertility and faster-growing lambs. These ewes are still producing 22- to 22.5-micron fleeces and another real plus of the selfreplacing Dohne flock is the ability of the Kernicks to breed their own replacement ewes and improve biosecurity. Our focus really is prime lamb production but by using Dohnes we can still sell the wool as AAAM which is a nice little earner, Neville said. Neville and Celia Kernick, Field, SA, are pleased with ther results of selecting rams with high maternal reproductive rates. DOHNE MERINO SOUTH AUSTRALIA BY JACINTA ROSE S OUTH Australian farmer Colin Black first introduced Dohne rams to his livestock program about five years ago, and was immediately impressed with the results. He has since completed the transition from Merino to Dohne rams and has reported a 20 per cent increase in lambing rates. Mr Black runs a 1000-hectare mixed sheep and cropping property at Caltowie with his wife Tina and their three young sons. A total of 900 breeding ewes are run on the property, with the two-, three- and four-year-old ewes mated to Dohne rams. Older ewes are mated to White Suffolk rams a practice Mr Black has continued from his time running Merinos. After looking to trial a new breed on his property, Mr Black selected Dohnes and began with a single mob. Five years ago I mated one mob to Dohne rams because I wanted to plain down a bit, he said. I put a different colour tag in the Dohne lambs at tailing so I could tell the difference between them and the Merinos. All the Dohne and Merino lambs were treated the same and run together in the same mob when weaned. When the lambs were crutched before shearing, the Dohne lambs were a lot heavier and were much better doers than the pure Merino lambs. When I pulled out my top 100 wethers to sell in-wool, 70pc of the top 100 were Dohnes, even though just one-third of all the lambs were Dohnes. Mr Black had planned on gradually introducing Dohnes across the property, but the first year results inspired him to make the switch sooner. I was going to do one mob to Dohnes each year and do the change slowly, but after that I decided it d be easier to do it all at Dohnes deliver LAMBING BOOST once and I was confident the results would be there, he said. The next year I mated all the two-, three- and four-year-old ewes to Dohne rams. In doing so I have increased my lambing by 20pc, and they are a more robust and quicker maturing lamb than the Merino. Mr Black said he had still maintained the same quality levels in the wool, with hoggets at 19- to 20-micron and ewes measuring 21-22M. They do cut one to two kilograms less in wool weight but the better lambing percentage more than compensates for this, he said. About 15 Dohne rams are run with the 700 two- to four-year-old ewes each year. I try and run the rams at about 2pc, because while I could go lower, 2pc helps to cut the lambing time because the rams can get over the ewes quicker if there s a few more of them. Lambing last year began in April, and was finished by mid-may. Mr Black said the dry summer meant feed in the paddocks was far from plentiful. Lambing got off to a bit of a rough start because we hadn t had rain, but I m very happy with how they managed, he said. I think that Dohne lambs utilise feed better when things are tough, so our ewes stayed in good condition all summer. Dohne lambs are also definitely stronger at birth I m sure that s what has helped us up our lambing percentage. While the ewe lambs form part of the self-replacing flock each year, wether lambs are sold either over the hooks or through the Jamestown markets, where Mr Black has previously topped the wether market with his Dohnes. I sell the top wether lambs in September with their wool for the top ones I can get just as much for them then without having to shear them, he said. DOHNE MERINO VICTORIA The Pilgrim Brothers operation - pictured scanning ewes in June - made the switch to Dohnes because they offered a range of marketing options. DOHNES DELIVER for Minimay BY CARLA WIESE-SMITH W HEN Ian Pilgrim first saw Dohnes at Hamilton, Vic, he was impressed. Mr Pilgrim who with his three brothers and two nephews farms 1780 hectares across three properties at Minimay, Vic had been breeding prime lambs from his cast-for-age Poll Merino ewes, but saw another alternative. I saw these Dohnes and thought they had a clean face, good body shape and looked like the ideal easy-care sheep, he said. My mate went to NSW to buy Dohne rams in 2005 and when he got them, I liked the look; I waited 12 months until he had half-bred Dohnes and I thought the purebred Dohnes were meatier, so I decided to change as quickly as I could. That was in 2006, and Mr Pilgrim quickly scrapped the idea of joining his CFA ewes to terminal sires I figured I could get just as good returns from the Dohnes. He now runs about 2400 breeding ewes, mostly third- and fourth-cross Dohnes, in a self-replacing flock and last year, shore just over 5000 lambs, ewes and replacement ewes. Additionally, the Pilgrims crop about 810ha and run fallow deer. The results from the Dohne infusion were immediately obvious to Mr Pilgrim. In 2010, which was a wet year, we got 129 per cent lambing from the Dohnes, and averaged 116pc across all the ewes that was with everything mated and none of the dry ewes taken off, he said. The best we had out of Poll Merinos was 126pc. Because they have been trying to build numbers up, Mr Pilgrim said they had been keeping as many ewes as they could and not culling as hard. We always culled on the short wool Merino, he said. Now we re just getting to the fourth-cross and then we ll cull heavily. They breed so well, we have a lot more surplus sheep now. Moving from the traditional Merino base, Mr Pilgrim said the wool micron hadn t changed. The wool is good, the micron hasn t changed at all, in fact this year it was a bit finer, he said. It s never over 21-micron, but this year it was 18M. Fleece weights had gone down a bit, however the sale of wether lambs compensated for this. We get the extra wool off the lambs, and last year they averaged $130.10 when we sold them. Generally, lambs sold overthe-hooks to Tatiara Meats at Bordertown, SA. Initially, Mr Pilgrim joined his ewes at a ratio of one to just under 100 because he said the rams were a bit expensive. However, having now seen the results and established a higher percentage Dohne flock, he now joined ewes at 1:75 and had also bought some stud Dohne ewes to add to his self-replacing flock.
