2018 NGSPA National Championships and Futurity The ruling factors in the 2018 NGSPA National Championships were flooding and mud! When my wife Diane and I arrived on the trial grounds on Tuesday before our scheduled Saturday start, the grounds were in the best condition we had seen for several years. The Arkansas Game and Fish staff Brad Wells and Clyde Red Bailey had obviously put the Summer and Fall mild weather to good use mowing, clearing brush and clearing fire breaks Great job Brad and Red! However, the skies opened up Thursday and heavy rain continued all of Friday. By Friday afternoon, Lick Creek had risen to the point only the upper crossing was usable and heavy rain was still in the forecast. Red, Board of Trustees members Dan DiMambro, Chris Streitenberger and I took a drive around the grounds and it was clear course two was completely flooded and unusable as were the lower parts of courses one and three. We were able to use the remaining parts of courses one and three (and the upper Lick Creek crossing) to lay out one course that was suitable and probably would not be made unusable by anticipated rising water. Further discussions, with Red, about how much higher the water could be expected to rise resulted in the decision to delay the start of the National Championships from Saturday to Sunday because of predicted heavy rain and thunder storms all day Saturday. As the Nationals progressed, the water continued to creep up and at times there were spots where the water was nearly to the horses bellies. Upon conclusion of the National Championship (All Age), serious consideration was given to cancelling the National Open Shooting Dog Championship due to deteriorating course conditions. In the end, the decision was made to continue based on favorable long range weather forecasts. The decision proved fortunate and we were able to finish the Nationals without further delays. Despite the less than favorable course conditions, everything went pretty smoothly. Everyone rolled with the punches and complaints were few and far between! We were fortunate to have Terry Trzcinski from Purina join us during the Amateur Championship and be present for our annual Purina Steak BBQ. His presence allowed us to express our appreciation for Nestle -Purina s continued support of sporting dog activities and field trialing in particular! Good seeing you Terry! Also joining us for his annual visit was Jim Morehouse Sportdog s field representative. Jim s visit provided all in attendance with the opportunity to see what new products Sportdog has added to its great line of dog training gear and allowed them to get help with technical issues. Thank you Jim! For the third year in a row, the City of Booneville made our lives easier by providing a Kawasaki Mule for bird planting and a surplus Humvee with driver to tow the dog wagon. We really appreciate their generosity! Booneville area merchants again made us all feel welcome and we appreciate their support! 2018 NGSPA Futurity & National Championships excellent preparation of the grounds and help during the trial and my wife Diane for her patience and coordination of the dog wagon! 2018 NGSPA National Amateur Championship By official scribe: Chris Streitenberger The National Amateur kicked off the 2018 NGSPA National Field Trial. The original starting date was delayed from Saturday February 24th until Sunday 25th because of hard rain and flooding on the grounds at Blue Mountain WLA. Normally three one hour courses are used for all of the stakes. The rain let up but the flooding continued to take over the trial grounds. A combination of courses one and three were cobbled together to provide a one hour figure eight type course. A decision was also made to run the trial as a continuous course rather than a defined one hour single course. This may not have been an ideal situation, but all competitors competed under the same difficult circumstances. A friend of mine once said, the only two guaranteed winners in life are Father Time and Mother Nature. Mother won this go round. The Amateur Championship was extremely competitive with 51 dogs drawn for the stake and 50 dogs going to the line. Our judges for this stake were Chuck Cooper from Pennsylvania and Jim Michaletz from Missouri. 2018 NGSPA National Amateur Championship (L-R) Judge Jim Michaletz, Hank Lewis, Brandon Blum with Hi-N s Hasty Matilda, Judge Chuck Cooper, Mike Patrick with Lambourn s Slick Shot, Robin Lambourn, and Chris Streitenberge Both are long time field trial competitors and trainers of high quality dogs. Their attention to every dog was greatly appreciated. In the end, they found several dogs they felt could have won on any given day but only two could win this week. The winner Hi-N s Hasty Matilda (Matte) owned and handled by Hank Lewis came out of brace 10 on the second afternoon of the stake. Matte is not new to the winners circle, but this was her first National title. From the first whistle it was apparent Matte came to hunt. As the course twisted and turned, Matte consistently showed to the front with no scouting required except to look for her on point. At the end of the hour, her score card showed bird work with exceptional style and manners at 10, 17, 23, 26, and 35. She also backed her brace mate at 13. Her run was at moderate shooting dog range and her ability to search out likely bird cover and to navigate the course as if on a rope gave her the nod over her competitors. Congrats Hank. The runner up Lambourn s Slick Shot (Buckshot) owned and handled by Robin Lambourn came out of brace 11. For those keeping score, Buckshot was the 2017 winner of this stake. Buckshot was described as a power shooting dog that required slightly more scouting to keep his hunting effort to the front. He and his brace mate were found standing at 12, 31, and 47 with a divided find being credited to Page 4

2018 NGSPA Futurity & National Championships each. Buckshot finished his hour standing on his own at 59. All manners around game were polished as you would expect from a now twice national champion. Congrats Robin. THE RUNNING Brace #1 Hi-N s Feed Jake (Jake), Hank Lewis, Owner/Handler and Riden High Rudy (Rudy), Ray Nelson, Owner/Handler left the starting line shorty after 8:30 on Sunday the 25th of February. Jake is a past winner here in Booneville. On this day he scored one find but was a little out of the pocket for most of his hour. To his credit, he did finish the hour hunting strong to the front. Rudy handled easy for Ray at medium shooting dog range and scored 4 finds evenly spaced through the hour. Brace #2 Tulli s Excess (Lexy), Joe Amatulli, Owner/Handler and Orlando s Oswald von Grief (Oswald), Bill Orlando, Owner/Handler were next up. Lexy had a find at 47 and a back at 53. On this day her hunting effort was not what Joe was looking for and chose to pick up early. Oswald hunted hard and had solid game work at 45 and 53. He did finish the hour but occasional lateral moves brought him to the front from behind. Brace #3 Chicoree s Country Fan (Fanny), Fred Ryan, Owner/Handler and Hi-N s Bodacious (Bo), Hank Lewis, Owner/Handler finished off the morning session. Fanny came to compete and in the big picture was considered a contender. She stayed to the front making life easy for her handler, Fred Ryan on his first trip to Booneville. She scored finished manor finds at 17, 25, 32 and 41. She did have a non-productive at 22. She finished the hour strong. Bo had bird work at 17, 25 and 32. He also was awarded a non-productive at 22. Bo is a hard driving dog and on this day a little rougher in his handle than what our judges were looking for. Brace #4 Prairie Winds Jim Kath s Kate (Kate), Keith Richardson, Owner/ Handler and All N s Double Down (Booby), Joe Orndorff, Owner/ Handler started us off for the afternoon session. Kate was gone a good bit of her time down and Keith chose to pick up at 40. Dooby is a young dog and on this day a little out of his comfort zone. He did score on game at 7, 29, and 41. To his credit, he did finish the hour. Brace #5 Slick s Slump Buster (Sadie), Matt Smith, Owner/Handler and Prairie Wind s Razor s Edge (Mickey), Keith Richardson, Owner/Handler were down next. Sadie was a little slower in her gait and slightly off in the direction of her hunt. She did make game contact at 8, 37 and 49. Mickey was not seen under official judgement after break-away and Keith pulled the tracker at 15. Brace #6 Quijano s Queen Isabella (Belle), Carla Quijano, Owner/Handler and Chicoree s Cuttin Loose (Lucy), Fred Ryan, Owner/Handler finished off day one of our trial. Bella hunted at a shorter range but was productive in her effort scoring finds at 5, 16 and 50. Lucy was another of the dogs in this stake that made the short list of contenders. On this day, she showed plenty of power with several bigger cast that took her to the front. Like other contenders she made the hour with limited scouting except to look for her on game. She recorded excellent style and mature manners on game at 5, 16, 27, 41 and 50. Brace #7 PW Extraordinaire (Airee), Keith Richardson, Owner/Handler and Llano s Snowbird (Feather), Chad Inderman, Owner/Handler were first up for day two. Day two started on time but came to a screeching halt 3 minutes into the brace. A fog bank moved into the lower areas of the course and time was called. Dogs were rounded up and after about a 45 minute delay, the clock was reset and the brace was released for a second time. Airie and Keith were not on the same page and Keith pulled the tracker at 17. Feather likewise was not observed under judgement after break-a-way and Chad too pulled the tracker. Brace #8 BMB s High Character (Carrick), Terry Zygalinski, Owner/ Handler and Snowy River s Full Strut ( Strut ), Chase Verdoorn, Owner/Handler were unleashed Page 5

2018 NGSPA Futurity & National Championships just beyond Lick Creek. Carrick choose a different direction than we had planned and Ziggy pulled the tracker to locate him. Strut has captured numerous wins in his career but on this day his gait was a little slow and he chose a little too much easy footing as he hunted to challenge the leaders. He did record finds at 2, 12, 31 and 58. Brace#9 PW Mya s Clean the Slate (Slate), Keith Richardson, Owner/Handler was drawn but scratched. BDK s Texas Hold Em (Tex), Clark Linn, Owner/Handler ran as a bye. Tex ran at a shorter range than our contenders but scored on game at 15 and 27 with finished manners. He did record a non-productive at 33. Brace #10 Monday afternoon brought Windjammer s Gemma (Gemma), Terry Zygalinski, Owner/Handler and Hi s Hasty Matilda (Matte), Hank Lewis, Owner/Handler to the line. Matte was previously scribed. Gemma located birds at 13 and 18 but her heart just wasn t in it today and Terry picked up at 35. Brace #11 PW Flirt She s A Keeper (Keeper), Keith Richardson, Owner/Handler and Lambourn s Slick Shot (Buckshot), Robin Lambourn, Owner/Handler were cast off mid-afternoon. Buckshot was scribed earlier. Keeper started like she could be a contender. Divided finds were recorded at 12, 31, and 47. Another find was recorded at 36. Unfortunately after the find at 47 she lost contact with Keith and was not under judgement at time. Brace #12 BDK s PW Annie Oakley (Annie), Keith Richardson, Owner/Handler and Tejas Bandit s Southern Belle (Belle), Kenneth Tomlinson, Owner/Handler rounded out our second day. Annie had limited contact with Keith from the first whistle and was picked up at 26. Belle recorded game contact at 13 and 39. She hunted well but as she moved forward spent a little more time on the roads than desired. Brace #13 Day three brought a one hour fog delay. Finally the air cleared and Quijano s Jax of Diamonds (Doc), David Quijano, Owner/Handler and Orlando s Oscar von Brief (Oscar), Bill Orlando, Owner/ Handler were released. Doc was a little rough in his handle but scored finds at 24 and 59. He was also credited with backing his brace mate at 28, 39 and 49. Oscar hunted hard with definite purpose and limited scouting for Bill. He showed polish around game at 11, 28,39 and 49. The find at 39 required a beautifully executed relocation. He finished the hour strong. Brace #14 Snowy River s Ivy Itch (Ivy), Chase Verdoorn, Owner/Handler and BDK S All That Jazz (Jazz), Terry Bomer, Owner/Handler completed the morning slate of dogs. Ivy recorded a single find at 16. She was credited with backs at 11 and 26. Nonproductive at 31 and 36 unfortunately ended her day. Jazz started like a dogs to watch. She has the speed and animation to make you set up in the saddle. She scored game at 11, 17 and 26. Unfortunately she released herself early as Terry was flushing the stand at 26. Brace #15 PW Mya s Feather Duster (Kirbie), Keith Richardson, Owner/ Handler and Uodibar s Day Money (Cash), Mike Aldrich, Owner/ Handler came to the line to finish our morning. Kirbie scored at 5 and 10 but his handler was not happy and picked up at 27. Cash is young and was just not in the game on this day. Mike picked up at 20. Brace #16 PW BDK s Dot On The Horizon (Dot), Keith Richardson, Owner/ Handler and Sixxem s A Cut Above (Sadie), Keith Bryant, Owner/Handler started our third afternoon. Dot is a bird dog and came to hunt on this day. She scored at 3, 13, 18, 29, 48, and 54. All bird work was at an upper level of polish and style. Unfortunately when released from her last find at 54 she could not be returned to judgement at time. Sadie like Dot showed up with her A game. She is a power shooting dog and on this day handled kindly always reaching for the front and completing her cast. She recorded bird work at 19, 25, 31 and 46. She also backed her brace mate at 13. A nice brace of dogs to ride behind! Brace #17 Page 6

2018 NGSPA Futurity & National Championships Snowy River s White Out (Willie), Chase Verdoorn, Owner/Handler and Dezasterous Here We Go (Jake), Matt Smith, Owner/Handler cast off in brace 17. Willie brought his all age shoes with him today and was gone for the first 22 minutes. Upon returning to the front he scored a find at 25. Chase chose to pick up after the flush. Jake was credited with a non-productive at 6 and a find at 29. He did finish the hour but seemed off on this day being limited in speed and range. Brace #18 Llano s Hot Tamale (Molly), Chad Inderman, Owner/Handler and PW Mya s Contender (Connie), Keith Richardson, Owner/Handler were up next. Molly scored at 8 with all in order. Released she did not return to official judgement and the tracker was called for. Point was called for Connie at 37. On the flush she had a breach of manners and was picked up. Brace #19 An extra brace was run this afternoon to assist one of our judges and his travel plans. Snowy River s Bankin on Boz (Boz), Chase Verdoorn, Owner/ Handler and Maverick s Big Bully (Bull), Clark Linn, Owner/Handler finished off day three. Boz is a bird dog and scored at 3, 7, 15, 19 and 34. At the end of the hour Chase did not have Boz and judges asked him to produce him. Boz was rounded up and brought to official judgement in the allotted time but came to us from behind. This may have cost him serious consideration. Bull had game contact at 5, 50 and 53. Bull finished the hour but several extended absences detracted from his hunt. Brace #20 Our last morning brought Cuttin Wild s Space Cowgirl (Lena), Mike Patrick, Owner/Handler and Chicoree s Sparkle in Her Eye (Sparkle), Fred Ryan, Owner/ Handler to the line. Lena started well scoring at 5, 18 and 25. Unfortunately she checked out early and Mike pulled the tracker to locate her. Sparkle was found standing at 7 but when released she also was not returned to judgement and the tracker was called for. Brace #21 Rio s Rising Renegade (Ace), Ray Larrondo, Owner/Handler and MSR S Lord of Dragonstone (Stan), James Messer, Owner/ Handler were next to compete. Ace is a strong forward running dog. He recorded game at 23, 32 and 37. His handle was acceptable but the run maybe a little bigger than needed for this stake. Stan was found standing at 19, all in order. After release he was not returned to judgement. Brace #22 Tulli s Shot to the Heart (Cupid), Joe Amatulli, Owner/Handler and Uodibar s Texas Moon AKA Pete (Pete), David O Brien, Owner/ Handler finished our last morning of the amateur. Cupid scored at 6, 31,33 39 and 49. Her hunt was a nice honest effort. Pete handled game with mature manners at 17 and 27 but handler was not happy with his hunt and picked up early. Brace #23 Quijano s Cutter (Willie), David Quijano, Owner/Handler and Snowy River s Cuttin Country (Dozer), Chase Verdoorn, Owner/ Handler were cast off on a rainy afternoon. Willie backed his brace mate at 4. Willie was not pleasing his handler and was picked up early. Dozer came to hunt. He scored first at 18 then again at 25, 27, 36, 37, 44 and 57. Dozer was a little slower a foot and the frequent down pours may have hampered his range to be a contender. Brace #24 BMB Madison Avenue (Madison), Brandon Blum, Owner/Handler and Dezasterous Jax the Ripper (Jax), Matt Smith, Owner/ Handler were up next. It was at this point my notes got washed and my memory cannot recall all of the details. Madison was up early and did not finish the hour. Jax did a nice job with numerous finds. Brace #25 Cajun s Firecracker Kadie (Kadie), Keith Bryant, Owner/ Handler and She s Got Legs (Ziva), Terry Bomer, Owner/Handler were released as brace 25. Sorry but I lost all of these notes to the rain. Brace #26 Our final brace of the stake brought BMB s Samsquaunch (Sam), Brandon Blum, Owner/ Handler and Chicoree s Jake s Bonnie (Bonnie), Fred Ryan, Owner/Handler to the line. Sam Page 7

2018 NGSPA Futurity & National Championships found standing by herself and at 29 she scored another divided find. All bird work was solid broke to wing and shot. Her race demonstrated speed and All Age potential. Dr. Reynolds recently retired and I m guessing Janie will occupy quite a bit of his time for the next several years. 2018 NGSPA Futurity Winners L to R: Chris Goegan, Dr. Robert Reynolds, Judge John Russell, Steve Stefaniak with In- Country s Hurricane Jane, Judge Mike Jackson, Hank Lewis with Rock River s You Can t Handle This, James Messer, Dr. Fred Ryan with Chicoree s Sparkling Ruby and Dan DiMambro Rock River s You Can t Handle It Dually owned by Rick Heller and handled by Dan DiMambro was second in the futurity and came from the same brace as our winner. At 17 he backed his brace mate in mature finished dog fashion. At 21 and 29 he shared divided finds with his brace mate. All bird work was broke dog worthy. Like our winner, Dually exhibited All Age potential in an animated forward fashion. was lost early and tracker called for. Bonnie finished the hour with 2 finds. Sorry for the lost information. 2018 NGSPA Futurity 2018 was easily the largest entry for our futurity in recent years. Thirty-six dogs were drawn with 35 coming to the line. Our judges for the stake were Mike Jackson from Indiana and John Russell from Kentucky. Both men are well known and respected in the American Field world. The futurity is a 30 minute stake and was run as a continuous course on the same figure 8 course laid out earlier for the Amateur. Six braces were run in the morning with another 6 braces run after lunch. Your 2018 winner was In-Country s Hurricane Jane owned by Dr. Robert Reynolds and handled by Chris Goegan. Janie has had an interesting early life, in that she changed hands three times because no one could see the potential in her until she landed at the Reynolds house. Bob doesn t say a lot but has a great eye and knows dogs. Janie was turned loose on the first afternoon of the futurity. She was braced with the eventual runner up which made for a great brace to ride and watch. Janie scored her first find at 17. Her style was 12 o clock and manners polished like a dog much her senior. Her second stand came at 21 as a divided find. At 26, she was Third place this year went to Chicoree s Sparkling Ruby owned by Fred Ryan and handled by Dan DiMambro. Ruby showed speed of foot and great style on her one find at 28. Like our other two places, she exhibited broke dog manners. Her ground race was very desirable and could be described as more in line with that of a shooting dog. Congratulations to all the owners and handlers of these great potential champions. THE RUNNING Brace #1 The first brace of the futurity came to the line on Thursday morning March 1st. Page 8

2018 NGSPA Futurity & National Championships PW Race to the Front (Racey) owned by Keith Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sale plus Evergreen s Jed Clampet (Jed) owned by Lance Olsen and handled by Dan DiMambro kicked off this event.. Racey was observed standing at 3. She assisted with the flush and was ordered up. Jed hunted at medium range early, then shorten toward the end of her time. She did handle three finds with broke manners. Brace #2 PW Evolution s Re-Creation (Spike) owned by Keith Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sale and Boschuit s Rowdy Rooster (Rowdy) owned by Curtis Boschuit and handled by Art Armbrust came to the line next. Spike was not in the game early and handler chose to pick up. Rowdy had bird contact but was ordered up due to immature manners. Brace #3 PWK Lonewolf s BJ (BJ) owned by Dean Crabbs/Diane Goracke and handled by Ronnie Sale came to the line with Dezasterous Final Justice ( Magic ) owner Reese Smith and handled by Dan DiMambro. BJ scored one find at 17. His range was conservative but he did finish the half hour. Magic had bird work at 9 and 12 but was also credited with two nonproductive at 18 and 28. Brace #4 Hickory Acres All Out Blitz (Blitz) owned by Scott Weslow and handled by Chris Goegan and Snowy River s No Limits Lyla (Lyla) owned and handled by Chase Verdoorn were unleashed next. Blitz went with a bird at 17 and was ordered up. Nyla suffered the same fate at 10. Brace #5 Covey Up s Wicked Witch (Hazel) owned by John Kadavy handled by Josh Nieman and MSR s Pretty Little Psycho (Harlie) owned and handled by James Messer were in brace 5. Hazel pointed at 11 but stand proved to be unproductive. Hazel and Harlie stood on a divided find at 19. At flush both went with the bird and were ordered up. Brace #6 PW Golden Ring (Ring) owned by Jamie Edwards and handled by Ronnie Sale and Cuttin Wild s Hidden Gem (Gem) owned by Mike Patrick handled by Josh Nieman were the last brace of the first morning of the futurity. Ring was not into the hunt on this day and handler picked up at 13. Gemma ran a great All Age type race but came up bird less at time. Brace #7 Autry s The Jokes On You (Crazy) owned by Heath Autry and handled by Josh Nieman plus PW The Real Deal (Deal) owned by Keith Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sale kicked off the first afternoon of the futurity. Unfortunately both were lost early and trackers called for. Brace #8 MSR s Rowdy Rhonda (Rhonda) owned by James Messer and handled by Chris Goegan and Tibercreeks Two Paws Up ( Koda ) owned by Mark Calder and handled by Joe Amatulli were up next. Rhonda hunted hard early and had one find but was immature for this stake. Koda went bird less. Brace #9 AK Veroom The Chase Is On (Veroom) owned and handled by Art Armbrust and Orlando s Otis von Grief (Otis) owned and handled by Bill Orlando were unleashed mid-afternoon. Veroom could not get started and Art picked up at 10. Otis seemed to use more road than necessary to get to the front. No bird work had been recorded and handler chose to pick up at 20. Brace #10 RSK s Wildfire Marshall (Marshall) owned by Gary Herald and handled by Chris Goegan and Sixxem s Californication (Callie) owned by Keith Bryant and handled by Josh Nieman were next to the line. Kodi and Mayda were both standing at 8. Mayda encouraged the bird to fly which proved too much temptation for Kodi and he also went with the bird. Both were ordered up. Brace #17 AO Tripps To Win (Tripp) owned by Alan Davidson and handled by Josh Nieman plus Tulli s Shot To The Heart (Cupid) owned and handled by Joe Amatulli made up brace 17. Tripp hunted at shooting dog range and scored several times on game. His first came as a stop to flush at 5. At 11 Tripp was found standing with all in order at flush. At 21 he backed his brace mate and rounded out his time with a solid piece of bird work as a divided find at 27. Cupid first made game at 5. Her manners were that of a seasoned broke dog. At 11 she stood again with the same results at flush. Game contact was also made at 21 and she finished her half hour with a divided find at 27. Her bird work was polished for her age and her over all hunt was that of a big shooting dog. He scored finds at 12 and 26 with broke dog manners. Ace was limited in his run and went bird-less. Brace #19 MSR Charles Little Angel (Addison) owned by Chuck Gonzalez and handled by Chris Goegan plus Autry s Natural Chromoly Steel (Molly) owned by Heath Autry and handled by Josh Nieman were the last brace of the futurity. Addison was not pleasing her handler and was picked up at 11. Molly was standing at 5 but moved up as handler approach and was ordered up. 2018 NGSPA National Championship By Official Scribe: Chris Streitenberger The 2018 National Championship drew our largest entry in recent years. Thirty-six dogs were drawn for the stake and 35 went to the line. Our judges were Mike Jackson from Indiana and John Russell from Kentucky. Both men are long time competitors in the American Field pointer and setter circles. Their years of experience were obvious in our just completed futurity which they judged. Like the previous two stakes, we used a modified single course, combining parts of course one and three. We appreciate this was not an ideal situation but, our hands were tied due to the expanding flood waters. The first brace in the National Championship was cast off on Saturday morning the 3rd of March. The weather had improved slightly but high water and mud were still in abundant supply. I think it is fair to say the scouts more than earned their pay in this go round. The winner came out of brace two on the first morning of the stake. Rio s Rising Renegade (Ace) owned by Ray and Tami Larrondo and was handled by Ray Larrondo. Tami drew the short straw and was the scout. Ace has notched multiple wins across the country. One of his signature trait is the ability to find game. This time down was no exception. Ace was locked up on his first find at 7. Birds well located with mature polished manors at flush. Sent on, Ace scored additional finds at 13, 37, 50 and 57. Tami may have drawn the short straw as scout, but her day was more relaxed than one would expect in an All Age stake. Ace showed great ground speed and powered to the front, showing consistently when needed. Our judges used that power with natural forward movement to separate Ace from the other competitors. Congrats Ray and Tami. The runner up, Texas Tuff (Tuff) owned by Terry and Kirk Bomer and handled by Keith Gulledge came out of brace 4 on the first afternoon of running. Like Ray, Keith utilized his better half ( Robbi ) to scout for him. Tuff proved to be a bird finding machine. His first contact came at 12. Tuff is a beautiful dog on point, staunch as a rock clear through the flush and shot. He exhibited this same style and manors on game at 17, 28, 30, 41, 43, and 49. He was also credited with a back of his brace mate at 22. The multiple finds did not detract from Tuff s desire to reach to the front. His speed simply got him from point to point in the blink of an eye. Congrats Terry, Kirk, Keith and Robbi. THE RUNNING Brace #1 PW Teton Aroma of Sage (Roma) owned by Keith Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sale plus Blue Rivers Cruisin Carla (Carlos) owned by Ann Peterson and handled by Josh Nieman were the first brace of the 2018 National Championship. Roma was not seen under judgement after the first whistle and handler asked for tracker at 30. Carlos was found standing to the front at 13. The bird work was all in order, but this was the last Carlos was seen under judgement. Tracker was called for at 47. Brace #2 Rio s Rising Renegade was previously scribed. His brace mate was PW I Con (Ike) owned by Keith Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sales. Ike was not seen after the break-a-way and tracker was called for at 35. Brace #3 BMB High Character (Carrrick) owned and handled by Terry Page 11

2018 NGSPA Futurity & National Championships Zygalinski plus Texas Tuff made up the last brace of the morning. Tuff was previously scribed. Carrick recorded divided finds at 12 and 23. He was also credited with a back at 17 and a find at 30. The bird work was more than acceptable but his run was a little unorganized. Brace #4 Woodland Trail LL Cool J (Woody) owned by Robert Reynolds and handled by Chris Goegan along with Llano s Hot Tamale (Molly) owned by Chad Inderman and handled by Josh Nieman kicked off the first afternoon of competition. Woody failed to back at 15 and was ordered up. Molly showed power to the front and scored at 4, 15, 17 and 52. She was also found standing at 17. After a flushing effort, a relocation proved unproductive. Molly is a beautiful dog on point and showed all of the power necessary to be an All Age contender at a high level of competition. Brace #5 MSR Quail Commando s Bunker Buster (Buster) owned by John Glover and handled by Chris Goegan plus BDK Gold Mine Claim Jumper (Bandit). Buster was found standing at 17 and with all in order he was sent on. Buster failed to negotiate a right turn and was not returned to judgement. Tracker was called for at 37. Bandit was away well navigating the course for the entire hour scoring multiple find with superb style and intensity. He finished going away. Brace #6 Snowy River s Full Strut (Strut) owned and handled by Chase Verdoorn came to the line to start day two with MSR s Storms End owned and handled by James Messer. The soft ground and over all tuff conditions seemed to take a toll on Strut. He did located game at 27, 37 and 46. His manors around game were polished. As the hour ground on, Strut slowed and fell behind but he did finish the hour. Renle scored and game but his race was not up to par. Brace #7 Chicoree s Elvis A Airing Felty (Elvis) owned by Lance Felty and handled by Chris Goegan and PW Penny for Your Thoughts (Thor) owned by Keith Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sales were cast off mid-morning. Elvis made game at 37 but handler chose to pick up at 45. Thor was found standing at 6 and with all in order he was sent on. He was last observed at 11 and tracker was called for at 45. Brace #8 HK s Topcat Kitty (Kitty) owned by Hayley and David Killam and handled by Eldon Hongo plus Sunny Fields Vega Rumor (Rumor) owned and handled by Art Terstage completed the second morning. Kitty did not make game contact while under judgement and was picked up at 57. Rumor was found standing at 17 and with all in order she was sent on. She also had a non-productive at 35. Handler chose to pick up at 57. Brace #9 Chicoree s Country Fan (Fanny) owned by Fred Ryan and handled by Dan DiMambro and BMB Free Ride (Lewey) owned and handled by Brandon Blum kicked off the second afternoon. Fanny made game at 17 and 22 but failed to negotiate the pavilion turn and tracker was called for. Lewey was found standing at 12, 23 and 41. Finished dog manors were in place. Handler pushed Lewey hard which seemed to detract from his ability to hunt cover. Brace #10 HK s Prime Cut (Henry) owned by Hayley and David Killam handled by Eldon Hongo and Kimber Tactical (Tac) owned by John Kadavy and handled by Josh Nieman came to the line next. Henry was found standing at 28 and 38. Both stands were non-productive and his day was over. Tac was not seen after break-a-way and handler called for tracker. Brace #11 Hi-N s Feed Jake (Jake) owned by Hank Lewis and handled by Dan DiMambro plus BMB Smasquanch (Sam) owned and handled by Brandon Blum were the last brace of day two. Jake is a previous winner in the stake but has been off for about a year recovering from a torn ligament. He finished the hour but may not have been quite on the top of his game. He did record finds at 33, 50 and 56. His style is still 12 o clock. Sam took a different route than was laid out and Page 12

Snowy River s White Out (Willie) was drawn but scratched. Bob made game at 21. Handler attempted a flush, then asked Bob to relocate. Effort resulted in a non-productive. Handler picked up at 28 Brace #13 DG s Lil Miss Memorial (Missy) owned by David Gangle and handled by Chris Goegan plus Llano s Game On Dude (Dude) owned by Chad Inderman and handled by Josh Nieman were our second brace of morning three. Missy scored on game at 19 and 43. Handler chose to end day early and picked up at 56. Dude recorded finds at 3 and 19 with finished manors. On an additional find at 48, Dude chose to release himself early and was ordered up. Brace #14 PW Bert s Joke on US (Bart) owned by Keith Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sale and MSR s Motorollin (Moto) owned and handled by James Messer were the last brace of morning three. Bart was not observed under judgement after being released and tracker was called for at 21. Moto recorded a find at 10 but was not making his handler any money and was picked up at 21. Brace #15 Chicoree s Sparkle in her Eye (Sparkle) owned by Fred Ryan and handled by Dan DiMambro and Jokes on You (Buddy) owned by Steve Erickson and handled by Chris Goegan came to the line on the final afternoon of this stake. Sparkle was last year s runner up and for the majority of her time down proved she was still a contender. Her first stand came at 25 and a second at 29. Her style and attitude around game are that of a champion. She also backed her brace mate at 19. Unfortunately she got hung up in heavy cover on the back side of the course and did not return to the front. Handler called for tracker at 49. Buddy first stood at 19. After a relocation birds were produced. Additional finds were recorded at 37, 49, 51 and 58. On finds 51 and 58, Buddy was slightly guilty of happy feet. Handler chose to pick up at 58. Brace #16 Orlando s Oswald von Grief (Oz) owned by Bill Oswald and handled by Dan DiMambro plus Slick s Cuttin Wild (Joker) owned by Mike Patrick and handled by Josh Nieman cast off midafternoon on the final day of the stake. Oz dug into the course and located game at 6, 42, and 58 displaying polished manors on game. Oz was also found standing at 29. After a relocation attempt, Oz was charged with an unproductive. Joker has multiple wins to his credit and has been one of our breeds most prolific producers of quality young dogs. On this day he checked out early and the tracker was called for at 26. Brace #17 Hi-N s Bodacious (Bo) owned by Hank Lewis and handled by Dan DiMambro and Texas Sharp Dressed Man (Glade) owned by Terry & Kirk Bomer and handled by Keith Gulledge were the last hopefuls to come to the line. Bo came to show he was to be taken seriously. He recorded finds at 3, 11, 18 and 46. Bo is a picture of style on game. He was also credited with a stop to flush at 43. The bird work at 18 was a divided find. It was called the find of the stake, as no other dogs had even ventured into this area. Unfortunately at 52 Bo was found standing for a 5th time. On flush he had a mental flash back to his youth and his day was over. You can only roll all of this around in your head and say - what if? Glade started well with finds at 11, 18 and 21. Again, the find at 18 was a high light of the stake. This is a beautiful intense dog on point. At 21 his youth showed and he released himself after the flush. The judges were complimentary of the overall quality in the stake and indicated they were very comfortable naming a National Champion and Runner Up. 2018 NGSPA National Shooting Dog Championship The Open Shooting Dog drew 49 entries with 48 dogs going to the line. The weather had finally moderated at this point and at least the horse path around the course started to dry. The Page 13

2018 NGSPA Futurity & National Championships grounds as a whole were still wet so the same figure eight course was still in play. Our judges for this portion of our National trial were Harold Woodward from Arkansas and Greg Sand from Kansas. Harold has judged for us twice before. His opinion is always respected. Greg describes himself as a retired school teacher and full time field trailer. In fact, at the completion of our trial he pulled out and drove all night to compete with his beloved Setters. That s dedication! The 2018 Open Shooting Dog Champion, Hi N s Hasty Matilda (Mattie) owned by Hank Lewis and handled by Dan DiMambro came out of brace 21, on the final day of competition. If you do not recognize the name, Mattie was also our 2018 Amateur Champion. I went back into our records and found the last time the same dog won both stakes at the same trial was in 1992. The dog was Picken s Diamond Lil handled by Dale Pickens. To further add to how difficult this can be, the amateur and open were judged by two different sets of judges. In my mind, that puts Mattie in a very elite group. From the get go, Mattie dug into the cover and swept the course to the front. Her attitude was all business. Her first find came at 8, with additional finds at 16, 22, 25, 37, 42, 47, 50, 53 and 57. The birds at 37 required a relocation which she accomplished flawlessly. The birds at 47 were located in an area of the course where no other dog in this stake had ventured. To save you from breaking out your calculator, that 2018 National Open Shooting Dog Championship (L-R) April Raber with Hi-N s Hasty Matilda, Judge Harold Woodward, Dan DiMambo, Eldon Hongo, Terry Hongo with HK s Trilogy, Judge Greg Sand and Dean Crabbs was 10 perfectly handled pieces of bird work. Her style on point is that of a painting. Twelve o clock head and tail and staunch as a stone statue. The amount of bird work would lead you to think she lacked range. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Her foot speed and single focus of locating game took her to the front at very acceptable shooting dog range from the first whistle to the call, pick them up. An impressive performance to say the least. Congrats Hank and Dan. The Runner-up was HK s Trilogy (Trio) owned by Hayley and David Killam and handled by Eldon Hongo. Trio ran in the first brace on the second morning of the stake. Eldon s wife Terri scouts for him, but in this brace she was given time off to simply watch and enjoy. Trio, like our winner, exhibited great ground speed and stayed in that proverbial 10 to 2 pocket constantly reaching to the front. She scored 9 perfectly handled finds with style and polish at 8,14, 21, 30, 39, 42, 49, 52, and 59. The magic number of finds to win this stake was not 9 or 10, but when you combine great ground races with a large number of finds, the bar gets set really high for the competitors. Congratulations Hayley, David, Eldon and Terri. THE RUNNING Brace #1 Lambourn s Slick Shot (Buckshot) owned by Robin Lambourn and handled by Josh Nieman and Tejas Bandit s Southern Belle (Belle) owned by Ken Page 14

Buckshot had a non-productive at 7 and was not pleasing his handler which ended his day at 27. Belle located birds at 20 but again she seemed to not have her heart in the game and was leashed at 38. Brace #2 Uodibar s Morass (Mo) owned by Ben Collier and handled by Dan DiMambro plus Cuttin Wild s Space Cowgirl (Lena) owned by Mike Patrick and handled by Josh Nieman were up next. Mo scored twice. Once at 25 and again at 53. All was in order around game and he finished the hour. Lena covered a lot of ground and recorded finds at 12, 50 and 58. Her style and attitude around game very acceptable. Brace #3 Chicoree s Jake s Bonnie (Bonnie) owned by Fred Ryan and handled by Dan DiMambro and Fly n F s Rocco Round the World (Rocco) owned by Charles Gonzales and handled by Chris Goegan were the last brace of the morning. Bonnie recorded bird work at 21 and 33 exhibiting the style and polish of a potential champion. Her ground game was strong to the front. She was carried on a short list by our judges till the last day of the stake. Rocco proved to be a bird dog. He scored at 16, 31, 34, 46, 53 and 57. The finds at 34 and 46 required relocation which he executed in a mature fashion. Brace #4 Riden High Rudy (Rudy) owned by Ray Nelson and handled by Dan DiMambro plus Texas She s Got Legs ( Ziva ) owned by Terry and Kirk Bomer and handled by Keith Gulledge were first up after lunch. Rudy although not extreme in range hunted hard and scored 5 finds at 21, 36, 44, 56 and 59. Ziva started well scoring finds at 25 and 48. Unfortunately her day ended at 56 when she failed to back her brace mate. Brace #5 Windjammer s Gem (Gem) owned and handled by Terry Zygalinski and Chicoree s Elvis A Airing Felty (Elvis) owned by Lance Felty and handled by Chris Goegan were next to compete. Gem locked up at 20 but became impatient with her handlers flushing attempt and self-relocated ending her day. Elvis scored at 4 but handler chose to pick up at 31. Brace #6 PW Flirt She s A Keeper (Keeper) owned by Keith and Roberta Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sale and Rio s Rising Renegade ( Ace ) owned by Ray and Tami Larrondo and handled by Ray, finished off day one. Jazz scored at 11 and 42 but was not pleasing handlers and her day ended early. Carrick backed his brace mate at 4. He also scored finds of his own at 8 and 14. His ground game was not making any money so handler picked up at 20. Thor likewise was kind of on his own program and his day ended at 20. Brace #12 Chicoree s Cuttin Loose (Lucy) owned by Fred Ryan and handled by Dan DiMambro and HK s Just Enuf (Cleo) owned by Hayley and David Killam and handled by Eldon Hongo were next. Lucy backed her brace mate at 2 but was not into hunting on this day and was picked up at 12. Cleo stood at 2 and again at 24. Both finds well located and all in order. She tired about half way through the brace and was picked up at 49. Brace #13 HK s Passing Lane (Laney) owned by Hayley and David Killam handled by Eldon Hongo ran as a bye to end the day. Laney did score a find at 10 but her hunting pattern was a little misdirected and handler picked up early. Brace #14 Prairie Wind Jim Kath s Kate (Kate) owned by Keith and Roberta Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sale and Windswept Last Chance Missy (Missy) owned by Robert Perlin and handled by Chris Goegan were the first brace of day three. Kate was credited with a divided find at 27 but had been out of judgement the first 26 minutes and was picked up. Missy suffered the same fate as Kate. Credited with a divided find at 27 but picked up due to extended lack of contact. Brace #15 PW Razor s Edge (Mickey) owned by Keith and Roberta Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sale and BDK s Texas Hold Em (Tex) owned by Clark Linn and handled by Keith Gulledge were next to the line. Mickey was gone at the break-a-way and tracker called for at 21. Tex scored at 20 but handler was not happy and called it a day. Brace #16 PW I Con (Ike) owned by Keith and Roberta Richardson and handled by Ronnie Sale plus Llano s Hot Tamale (Molly) owned by Joe Inderman and handled by Josh Nieman were the last brace before lunch. Ike recorded finds at 11 and 15 but got misdirected and tracker was called for. Molly came to hunt with her A game. This was one of those sit up in your saddle and take it all in kind of runs. Molly scored at 4, 10, 21, 28, 34 and 48. Her style and intensity around game are beyond reproach. Then the what if moment happened. Prior to crossing Lick Creek time was called. Josh did not have her at time. Both Josh and scout rode hard looking mostly behind us as we had not seen her since the find at 48. The feeling was she was on point and buried up as that area offers a lot of thick cover to hide a dog. After a generous amount of time, the judges had to offer up the tracker. She was found on point but 500 yards to the front. Nice dog. Brace #17 PW BDK s Dot on the Horizon (Dot) owned by Keith and Roberta Richardson and handled by Keith and Robbi Gulledge and All-N s Double Down (Dooby) owned Joe Orndorff and handled by Chris Goegan were first up after lunch. Dot went bird hunting when unleashed. She recorded finds at 20, 24, 31, 42, 48, 52 and 58. She dung into the cover and for the most part stayed to the front. Near the end of her hour, she got behind for a few minutes which in this caliber of trial sometimes makes a big difference. Dooby encouraged a bird to fly at 9 and ended his day. Brace #18 Jim Kath s Pandamonium (Panda) owned by Jim Yates and handled by Dan DiMambro plus Hi Points You Don t Know Jack (Jack) owned by Steve Stefanick and handled by Chris Goegan were unleashed mid-afternoon. Panda scored at 3 but recorded nonproductives at 9 and 18 and her day was over. Jack stood at Page 16

Kirbee recorded bird work at 8, 15, 25 and 30. Sparkle scored at 8, 25 and 31. At this point the wheels came off as we approached the turn around on the back end off the course. Both handlers and scouts were riding hard to produce their charges, but in the end both trackers were called for and the day ended. Brace #20 Rummel s Augie Dogie (Augie) handled by Dam DiMambro and All N s Green with Envy (Jade) owned by Robert Reynolds and handled by Chris Goegan kicked off the last morning. 2018 NGSPA Quail Championships The 2018 NGSPA Quail Championship was held again tis year at the Lake Murray Field Trial Grounds in Ardmore Oklahoma, starting on January 16 and finishing on the 26th. Thanks to the Lone Star German Shorthaired Pointer Club and it s members for helping and making my job a lot easier. The trial kicked off this year with Kevin Temple as our Open Shooting Dog stakes manager, along with the help of Tony Miller and his wife, Jennifer, who had the duties of planting birds, cooking and everything else that goes into a day at a field trial - not to mention Robbi Gulledge and Terry Bomer helping with the drawings. This year was met with brutal cold weather dipping down into the single digits, but, at least, there was no precipitation. I know you guys from up north are laughing but to the dogs and people who ran their braces, it was cold! This year was the largest number of dogs ever run during the trial (127) and we are grateful for all the professionals and amateurs who show up every year to make the Quail one of the largest Championships in the NGSPA circuit. This years Open Shooting Dog comprised of 45 starters, was judged by Bob Rankin and Ray Nowell. The Amateur All Age had 16 starters this year and was judged by Xavier Harvey Franco and Mike Aldrich. The Amateur Shooting Dog had 34 starters this year and was judged by Xavier Franco and Bob Rankin. The Open All-Age, like the Amateur All-Age had 16 starters with Mike Aldrich and Tim Hidalgo sitting in the saddle judging. We finished up the trial with our Open Derby comprised of 16 up and coming young dogs, judged by Tim Hidalgo and Tom Milam. Once again, I would like to give a big Thank You to all of our judges for the many hard hours riding in the cold weather, and always being flexible with riding the course to be able to maximize the hours so that the club was able to accommodate all of the entries in the limited number of days that we have available due to the heavy number of trials at Lake Murray trial Will Barbee and David O Brien grounds. We all were treated hors d oeuvres and drinks, thanks to Andy Gerdes and Pantera Construction, one of our sponsors nightly as well as a wonderful smoked prime rib dinners masterfully prepared by Keith Traphagen along with burgers for lunch on Saturday. Runner-Up BDK s All That Jazz Jazz 2018 NGSPA Quail Open Shooting Dog Keith Gulledge, Terry Bomer, Robert Reynolds judge, Ronnie Sale, Robbi Gulledge with BDK s All That Jazz (Runner-Up) and Keith Richardson with Prairie Wind s Mya s Contender (Champion) Jazz who also ran on Tuesday in the bitter cold, came from the third brace, handled by Keith Gulledge and scouted by his wife, Robbi. Jazz, who also had great range and handled well under the windy conditions, making it hard to hear her handler, was on course, also, always to the front and found standing at 29 with great class and manners. Jazz was off to the front, hunting hard, but was only rewarded with the solo find and finished her hour with bas left in the tank. Jazz is owned by Kirk & Terry Bomer. fast burritos and warm cookies on the course. Thanks to Andy Gerdes and Keith Traphagen for providing and installing the new oven in the clubhouse and the various dog wagon drivers for delivering them. This trial would not be able to flow as easily and smoothly if it were not for the help of the Lone Star GSP club members who helped with whatever chores were asked of them. I was able to make it in Thursday evening to run the Amateur All- Age and The Amateur Shooting Dog stakes and Andy Gerdes finished up running the trial with the Open All Age and Open derby. The Quail Championship is a dual sanctioned trial with the American Kennel Club with the stakes being AKC Grand Champion point stakes. OPEN SHOOTING DOG Champion Prairie Wind s Mya s Contender Connie Connie who ran on Tuesday, in Brace #5, rose to the top of the board with a very hard running, always forward race with excellent range for a shooting dog. Having finds at 5, 10, and a stop to flush at 15 and then finds again at 38, 45 and 50 was a truly bird finding machine. On three occasions, Connie was gone to the front and found standing her birds with very good style and manners in order on all of her finds. Her efforts paid off for AMATEUR ALL-AGE Champion BDK s Gold Mine Claim Jumper Bandit Owner/Handler: David O Brien Bandit was away strong to the front and continued his forward race for the entire hour. He was found standing on point three times displaying excellent style and intensity and remaining rigid until moved on by his handler and owner, David O Brien. Scout Terry Bomer was required very little as the dog stayed forward when released after his bird work. At the end of his hour, he was still reaching for the front. Page 20

AMATEUR SHOOTING DOG Champion Snowy River s Full Strut Strut Owner: Mark Verdoorn Handler: Chase Verdoorn 2018 NGSPA Quail Amateur All Age Winners Peggy O Brien, David O Brien, Mike Aldrich (judge), Harvey Franco (judge), Mike Patrick and his mother, Gail Patrick, Terry Bomer with BDK s Gold Mine Claim Jumper (Champion) and Keith Bryant with Slicks Cuttin Wild (Runner-Up) Runner-Up Slick s Cuttin Wild Joker Owner/Handler: Mike Patrick Joker who is not new to the Winner s Circle at the Quail or anywhere in his illustrious career, who was running in his second to last field trial, displayed why he has been one of the top winners for years, was off displaying a strong searching race never in sight for long, but appearing when needed. He scored his first find at 4, with brace mate sharing the find. Manners all in order, Joker immediately went to the cover. He scored his second find later in the brace with the same results. Scout Keith Bryant kept the dog forward finishing still moving through the brush. He was high and tight on his game with manners all in order. 3rd Place - AKC MSR s Motorollin Moto Owner/Handler: James Messer Moto was away with a big move to the front before breaking off into cover. She located quail three times during the hour each time having difficulty getting the birds pinned before tightening up. Manners all in order Moto continued to finish to the front. 4th Place - AKC Snowy River White Out Willy Willie was strong to the front on breakaway immediately taking to cover. His race was not as big as our winners but his gait was attractive with plenty of power. He made a few big moves but basically, his race was a shooting dog in proportions. He had Strut was off and strong to the front with a forward race the entire hour. With good Shooting Dog range, he handled and flowed effortlessly for Chase around the course. Strut was rewarded with a find at 12 to the front with manners in good order. As the hour continued, Strut was needing very little guidance as he continued to show to the front and was found standing again at 29. Strut was displaying solid stamina, and a great hunting desire when found for his third find at 34 with classy tail and staunch solid point his manners were all in order. Strut continued to stretch out forward into and out of the different pastures on the course along lake Murray shore lines, giving the judges a solid Shooting Dog Championship performance that they were looking for. As time was called, Strut was to the front out of site and was found standing tall on his fourth find. Runner-Up Texas She s Got Legs Owner: Kirk & Terry Bomer Handler: Terry Bomer Ziva was off to the front with a solid Shooting Dog race with nice manners and a willingness to go with her handler. 2018 NGSPA Quail Championships was found standing to the front on point with manners all good through the flush and shot at 27 minutes. She was released and with a nice race going forward with style hunting, covering a lot of ground and hunting the objectives, was again found backing her brace mate, at 35, she had a non-productive on a pile of feathers on a fresh hawk kill and was released. She was found again at 45 standing to the front with manners in order. Diva was sent on and continued to hunt always moving forward and was found at 51 minutes. Her race was very clean with stamina, and exhibited good hunting ability while producing game in the appropriate objectives with very little need from her scout. OPEN ALL AGE by Mike Aldrich Champion Texas Tuff Tuff Owner: Kirk & Terry Bomer Handler: Keith Gulledge Wednesday 8am. Tuff broke strong into the rising sun and was only seen sparingly for the first 30 minutes, but showed on occasion always to the front. His long stride and flowing gait helped him cover the ground without getting caught up investigating old scent. Heading for the Bear trap, Tuff was quickly rounded up and sent on his way from the hole of little return, a fate his brace mate fell victim to. At 42, he styled up on a likely quail hangout and after a short relocation effort, the bird was pinned. Runner-Up MSR s Storms End Renly Owner: James & Sara Messer Handler: James Messer Renly was part of the third brace, Tuesday morning. The skies were clear with little wind and rising temperatures. He was away smartly with little on his mind other than finding birds. For the next hour, Renly would cover the Lake Murray grounds with strong casts showing when needed scoring twice on game. His style and manners were impeccable and when released, he reached to the front and out of sight. As the hour wore on, Renly would shorten some which was the difference between first and second. Also considered for placement was BDK s Gold Mine Claim Jumper, who took third in the AKC side of the trial. Bandit recently named Quail Amateur All-Age Champion and is owned by David O Brien and handled by Keith Gulledge. He had a strong race of all age proportions covering the ground with huge strides. Bandit s only bird work came at 57 when a bird was seen leaving a wooded edge. Bandit was spotted standing with manners all in order, however what actually happened was undefinable. Despite the lack of a creditable find, this was a fine effort. Page 22

2018 NGSPA Region 5 Championships By Gailen Copper and Ken Chenoweth The championship began after the conclusion of the National German Pointing Dog Association Championship at Pyramid State Park (Denmark Site) near Pinckneyville, Illinois. A big thank you to our judges / scribes Gailen Cooper and Ken Chenoweth. Thanks also goes out to Purina, Jim Morehouse and Sport Dog and Alan Davison from Dogs Unlimited for their continued support of this field trial. Thank you to Tom Davis for driving the dog wagon and for everyone who helped to make this a successful trial. All Age and Derby were canceled due to lack of entries. The championship began with the Amateur Shooting Dog. It was capably judged by Gailen Cooper and Ken Chenoweth. The judges were presented with six braces of quality dogs to watch. The judges named Chicoree s Sparkle in her Eye, handled and owned by Fred Ryan, DMV, the Champion. Sparkle was scouted by Hank Lewis. Sparkle s first find was on course one at 13 in the grove of trees before the first road crossing. Handler relocated her and birds were located 10 feet in front of her. She pointed at 10 which was a dead bird. At 38 she pointed in the grove of trees next to the lake. Sparkle then went past the corral fencing to Amateur Shooting Dog Winners Rich Barber, Judge Gailen Cooper, Fred Ryan with Chicoree s Sparkle in Her Eye, Tom Davis, Hank Lewis with Hi-N s Hasty Matilda, Dan DiMambro and Judge Ken Chenoweth the left out of sight where she was found on point with a stylish find. At time she was found to the front after the big cast on point. Runner-Up was awarded to Hi N s Matilda who is owned and handled by Hank Lewis. Fred Ryan was the scout. Matte was turned loose in the creek bottom field. She was found to the front of the breakaway. Just before the lake, she went on point with birds right in front of her. Matte s was wide at times. Her second find was in the grove of trees before the lake at 41. Her third find was at 57. Nice finish. In the Open Shooting Dog Championship, the judges were again Gailen and Ken. They watched the performances of eight braces of dogs. Several dogs caught the judge s eye with the Championship being awarded to Dezasterous Jax The Ripper, owned by Matt Smith and handled by Dan DiMambro. Jax made a strong move off the cast off and was found at 6 on point. He continued moving deep into the country with a nice find at 55. Then finished the hour by riming the final field and found on point at time. Earning Runner up was Riden High Rudy owner By Ray Nelson, and handled by Dan DiMambro. April Raber was the trusted scout for both dogs. Rudy had a strong forward race with a find at 5. He was found backing at 17 and 32. Rudy then was found on point at 48 with a long flush. His final find was at 58 with a very strong finish to the front. Page 30

2018 NGSPA Region 17 Championships ran a strong forward race, scoring 3 evenly spaced finds during her effort. 2018 NGSPA Region 17 Amateur Shooting Dog Winners (L-R front row) Kirk Loftin with Lexi, David Quijano with Babe (standing) Lance Shultz (judge), Larry Loftin, Meghan Renee, Mike Patrick, Chuck Parietti (judge) Submitted by Randy Rathman Jr, III Dog Championship. The Open Shooting Dog Championship had Lance Shultz and Jon Small from Pleasant Hill, MO judging the efforts. From a field of 20 starters, they named Murphy s Babe the Champion. Drawn in the 8th brace, handler Josh Nieman and scout David Quijano showed Babe on 4 finds. All strong to the front. Heath Kooima is the proud owner. The Runner-Up came from the 5th brace. BDK s Prairie Wind Annie Oakley, handled by Keith Gulledge and scouted by Robbi Gulledge for owners Keith & Bobbi Richardson, scored 3 good finds during her effort. Overall a very nice job. The Ringneck GSPC ran its annual field trial March 23-28, 2018 at the Branched Oaks Field Trial Area near Raymond, Nebraska. The weekend trial ran March 23 & 24, with the NGSPA Region 17 Championships starting March 25. Overall the weather was windy, chilly, and wet. In other words, just another field trial in the early spring in the Midwest. First off, I would like to thank all the judges that put in hours in the saddle, a thankless job. Big thanks goes to Karen Wagner for the hot meals. 2018 Eastern German Shorthaired Pointer Club Field Trial (Dual Sanctioned) On April 14, 2018, the Eastern German Shorthaired Pointer Club ran our Spring horseback field trial at the English Setter Club of America, in Medford, NJ. Usually a full 3 day trial had to be condensed to one full day due to last minute date changes. Handlers, dogs and horses were not prepared for the heat as we had our first 80+ degree day in New Jersey. We had a great team of volunteers assisting and everything ran smoothly.
