A solution for current veterinary challenges

Introduction The current disease challenge in veterinary practices is increasingly coming from pathogens that are resistant to both anti-bacterial pharmaceutical products and certain classes of disinfectant. The aims of a practice hygiene scheme should be; A reduction in the risk of cross infection. To improve staff and patient safety. To facilitate a rational approach to antibiotic use. To achieve this; A hygiene protocol must be designed, adopted and monitored. Disinfectant chemistry must be selected on the grounds of independent data. Products used must be capable in inactivating pathogens of concern at a normal in use dilution, taking into account a range of temperatures and with a rapid contact time. 01347 878697 3

Virkon Professional 30 years of worldwide use and no acquired resistance Virkon Professional remains one of the key scientific breakthrough uses of oxidative chemistry to inactivate a wide range of pathogens in a variety of conditions, at a single standard dilution, more rapidly than counterparts. It has remained the benchmark product for disinfectant performance receiving global registrations and is incorporated into schemes such as AUSVET and listed in the DEFRA Approved Disinfectants schedule. To date it has been independently proven effective against; Over 100 strains of viruses in 22 virus families. Over 400 strains of bacteria. Over 60 strains of fungi. Despite constant use since its introduction in 1986 there has been no report of any acquired resistance. Virkon Professional proven to be effective in 60 seconds In tests carried out by Accuratus Laboratories in the USA in 2016, Virkon when tested was proven effective against pathogenic avian influenza and infectious bronchitis virus within 60 seconds. The tests carried out at a diluted strength of 1:200, at room temperature, in the presence of 5% organic soiling, which proves, again, the high level of efficacy of Virkon Professional. (Data on file) Virkon Professional active against ESBL bacteria New strains of bacteria emitting the ESBL (extended spectrum beta-lactamase) enzyme have been shown to be resistant to certain antibiotics. These bacteria include strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. Work carried out recently (data on file) has shown that Virkon was effective against these strains within 10 minutes at a temperature of 10 C. 4 www.jakmarketing.co.uk

Virkon Professional and the environment Virkon Professional is not considered persistent in the environment according to standard European test data; it contains simple organic salts and organic acids and will not pose a threat to sewerage treatment facilities. Virkon Professional potential impact on antibacterial therapy usage Virkon Professional is required in all veterinary practices as routine use will: Control the development of resistant pathogen strains. Correct use will reduce premise contamination reducing patient cross infection. Reduce the risk of zoonotic organisms being transmitted to staff. This will aid the review of antibacterial therapy protocols. Virkon Professional as part of a biocide rotation scheme Concern has been raised that biocidal usage could select for antibiotic resistant organisms such as methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), methicillin-resistant staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) or various gram negative bacilli and that these bacteria may have increased insusceptibility to biocides. Therefore alternating (rotating) biocides may help prevent not only the development of biocide resistance but also the selection of antibiotic resistant bacteria ¹. UR TU AT SA DAY RD SUN ND DA AY In order to implement a viable rotation of biocide use different products with dissimilar chemistries and mechanisms should be used. Virkon Professional is an oxidising system and can be rotated with a quaternary ammonium compound based product such as Sanivet 2 to achieve best results. It is recommended that, in normal circumstances Virkon Professional should be used throughout the practice on at least one day per week (more regularly in high risk/clinical areas) unless there is a specific disease challenge. Sanivet 2 is an ideal disinfectant to use routinely on all practice surfaces, floors, cages and tables on the days when Virkon Professional is not used. J.A.K Practice Hygiene Dipslide Kit In order to confirm the effectiveness of a hygiene protocol it is necessary for practices to have a programme of regularly checking the level of bacterial contamination. This can be achieved by using the J.A.K Practice Hygiene Dipslide Kit. It consists of a pack containing 5 dipslides to test different practice surfaces for biological contamination. Test indicates aerobic bacterial, enterobacteria and E.coli viable organism count. Easy to perform test, results within days. Test should be carried out regularly (at least once every three months) to establish trends and improve biosecurity levels. Introductory kit is provided with sample of Virkon Professional Tablets, Sanivet 2, a hygiene protocol booklet and wallchart. Aseptically remove slide from container without handling orange or cream rectangular pads. Hold against surface for 5 seconds ensuring maximum contact. Return immediately to tube and dispatch. Virkon Professional best use guidelines and staff safety Virkon Professional is available as readily soluble pink powder or tablet. Bulk packs and sachets of powder are available to make up larger quantities of solution or as tablets to ensure dosing accuracy when making smaller amounts. Virkon Professional - a typical 1:100 (1%) has been shown to be non-irritating to skin and eyes, and does not contain sensitising ingredients. Always add Virkon Professional to a measured amount of warm water. Always wear household gloves and eye protection when handling professional standard disinfectants. Avoid atomising disinfectant chemicals, even when diluted, unless required for misting, in which case wear a face mask. It is preferable to squirt and wipe to prevent inhalation. Ensure sufficient disinfectant is used and left to dry naturally, as a guideline approximately 250-300ml of solution per 1 metre square. When using on exposed metal surfaces it is advisable to wipe the area dry after 10 minutes. Virkon Professional (unlike certain types of disinfectant) can be used whilst animals are present. Always refer to the MSDS sheet for advice about handling powder and tablets. Keep solution away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Virkon Professional does not contain any carcinogenic ingredients. 6 www.jakmarketing.co.uk

Using Virkon Professional Remove visible waste, if necessary pre-clean area with reliable detergent. Use Virkon Professional at a standard dilution rate of 1:100 and leave to dry for 10 minutes. Virkon Professional Powder (lemon scented) available as 2.5kg tub/50g sachet. Mix at a rate of 10g per litre of warm water. Make up sufficient for 1 days use. Virkon Professional Tablets (non-scented) available as 50x5g or 50x 50g packs. Mix at a rate of one 5g tablets per 500ml hand held spray or one 50g tablets per 5 litre bucket container. It is recommended to be used daily prior to or after periods of patient traffic or in the event of a contaminating event. Use especially in all areas of where clinical activity may result in contamination e.g. consulting room tables, operating tables, recovery kennels etc. Can be used as a rotation product to break any resistance of some chemistries employed in the practice at least one day per week to effect deep clean throughout the practice. Virkon Professional can be used in all areas of the practice including: Hard surfaces and furniture. Equipment. Vehicles. As a foot bath additive. Aerial disinfection in kennels/stabling. Further information For individual Virkon Professional test data results contact J.A.K Marketing on 01347 878697 or at sales@jakmarketing.co.uk Also available: Sanivet 2 a new double chain quaternary ammonium chloride compound and alkylamine mixture for cost effective, routine disinfection of practice premises. Sanivet 2 is available in drums containing 5 or 20 litres and contains a pleasant apple fragrance. Ref1 Biocide rotation in healthcare settings: Is there a case for implementation? Mutough et. al.
