Tails Waggin. A Newsletter for BOTC Members and Friends January 2013 President s Message JoAnne Rowles It doesn t seem possible that 2012 is in our rear view mirror and 2013 is already barreling down the road ahead of us. At the January meeting members were asked to write down the goals for their dogs and themselves with strategies to accomplish those goals. In July we review our goals and have an opportunity to revise them. I am a firm believer that without goals we never accomplish anything. This year for fun we also wrote down a bucket list of things our dogs would like to do go camping, learn a new sport, play dates with friends etc. I will bring the goal sheets and bucket lists to the next meeting for those who missed the January meeting. We set some dates for upcoming events including the Hot Dog Mock Trial and Mardi Gras and the Sun, Fun, Stay, Play Match to be held March 29 th prior to the KC Kennel Club Trials. This is an approved AKC Sanctioned Obedience and Rally C Match. The holiday dinner was held at Too Fat s this year. The food was great as usual. Thanks to Kim for setting it up for us. I know I had a good time and from the comments I received everyone else did too, except one who felt the space was too small. HOT DOG MOCK TRIAL SUNDAY JANUARY 27 th @ 1PM WINDSOR PARK GO WEST ON HOWELL OFF OLD RIVER ROAD between State Farm & Mercy Southwest Hosp. The Hot Dog Mock Trial is a great opportunity to test and/or proof your dog in the obedience/rally ring. It s also an opportunity to get together with others interested in obedience training and competition. The event starts with barbecued hot dogs and fixins. If you plan to attend, bring a salad or dessert or something appropriate. Bring your own drinks. We will set up rings for obedience and rally obedience. See you there weather permitting!! If it s cold we ll be there. Heavy rain no mock trial. No February Meeting Plan to attend Mardi Gras Sunday February 17, 2013 Windsor Park @ 1pm Annual Animal Shelter Collection For the 4 th year BOTC members have generously donated blankets, towels, bedding, shoe boxes, newspapers, collars, leashes, toys and more to make life better for the animals at the shelter during these cold winter months. This year we also purchased a kurunda bed. Over 200 of these beds were donated enough for each kennel. They are durable and get the dogs up off the cold concrete floors. 1

2. The greatest wealth is family and friends. Enjoy their love and support. 3. Every day is special. Make it the best it can be. 4. No is unacceptable. Don t stop there. Go for yes. 5. Celebrate excellence. Make people feel important. I had the opportunity to meet the new director Jen Woodard. She was very pleasant and brings a new perspective to the shelter. Animal Control Commission Meeting The Commission meets the third Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. on the First Floor of the Public Health Department, 1800 Mount Vernon. The next meeting is: Wednesday Feb 20 th. With the appointment of a new Animal Control Director and a newly appointed Commissioner, it s important that we continue to watch the work of the commission and to provide input that is important to all dog owners. Joan really needs some members to attend the meetings with her. It s that time again. Time to come up with the new year s resolutions. Why not resolve to spend more quality training time with your dog and make a plan to earn a title? I double dog dare you. JoAnne Rowles If you accept my challenge here is a recipe for success from Debbi Fields of Mrs. Fields Cookies. Her recipe can help everyone no matter whether you are selling cookies or training dogs. 1. Be passionate. Love what you do. 6. The greatest failure is not to try. When you dream, wake up and do. Now mix in her special success ingredients: Philosophy of excellence: Good enough never is. Attitude of excellence. When things are bad, it means that good is close by. Report card of excellence: Get wows. The formula is so simple anyone could do it. True enough. Why then did Debbi succeed so well with her recipe while others did not. Debbi added a secret ingredient ---passion!! Club Practice Obedience: Club practice for obedience and rally is at Jastro Park on Tuesdays other than meeting nights at 7:00pm. Come on out, bring your dog and join the fun. See you there! Agility: Practice times Thursdays 4:30pm and Saturdays at 9:00am at the agility field. It is best to call to verify times. For info call Kathy @ 399-0161. The agility field is for club members only. Dogs must be obedience trained, under control and with waivers & evaluations completed before using the field. 2

At the time of the trials she had lymphoma. This was a special victory for her. Unfortunately Miss Bingo passed 3

away November 30 th after a valiant fight with her cancer. If you want your brags published in Tails Waggin fill out form at meeting, mail to BOTC, PO Box 82522, Bakersfield CA 93380-2522 or email jrowles@bak.rr.com Tribute to Miss Bingo Rhelda Hughes I don't know if you, or many people know this, but it is such a bittersweet story and has so touched my heart I thought I would pass it along just in case. Pam Mercer & "Miss Bingo" (Pam and Tom's Dalmatian) attended our just completed rally class with Samantha instructing. Watching Pam & Bingo working together on those class nights, it was immediately obvious of the love between them and the bond they shared with each other, and how much Bingo loved doing what she was doing. Tom also attended when he was physically able. Several months previous Bingo had been diagnosed with cancer, and after doing all they could, and when the prognosis became obvious, Pam & Tom made the difficult decision to keep her comfortable and happy for her remaining days. As the rally class progressed, the jumps were lowered for Bingo, but she did everything with such happy compliance, never once taking her loving eyes off Pam the entire time unless Tom was there, and then she did give him a glance once in awhile. She was doing what she loved. On graduation night she uncharacteristically refused the first jump, so the bars were laid on the ground so she could complete the course, which she did, taking 1st place AND, High in Mock Rally Trial on that graduation night. Pam &Tom lost Bingo the very next day... Thanks to Pam & Tom, Bingo got to do what she loved until her very last day. What a wonderful example of the love and respect between us humans and our beloved critters! Condolences and kudos to Pam & Tom for their efforts and love. The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation has approved more than $1.7 million for 17 research projects, ranging from the causes of periodontitis and the prevention of tick-born diseases to the treatment of urinary incontinence. The foundation awarded the grants to 13 institutions and universities for studies intended to benefit all dogs. 5

The research could result in improved diagnoses and treatments, and a greater understanding of the causes of diseases in areas including oncology, cardiology and infectious disease. Research on cranial cruciate ligament disease will approach it from multiple angles, the CHF says providing options for treatment, such as stem cell and platelet rich plasma therapies, as well as new evaluation systems, including conformation scores and D computer evaluations of the knees. Another project will test a treatment for brain tumors with the goal of translating it to human health care. The foundation is supported by the AKC, Nestle Purina PetCare and Pfizer Animal Health, among others. (DOG Watch Jan 13) who donated. Your generous donations filled his living room and beyond.
