CONSULTANCES OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008: Training in milk hygiene, marketing and processing for SPDD staff of VSF Germany and line Ministry Staff in Puntland, Somalia. The training, conducted in the Department of Public Health, Pharmacology & Toxicology in collaboration with the Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Technology, was designed to improve skills and enhance capabilities of the staff in conducting TOTs and handling of challenges in milk hygiene, marketing and processing within the livestock dairy subsector. 4

MAY 2009: Investigation of the blackening of canned beef at KMC factory, Athi River. Investigation of the cause(s) of blackening of canned beef from drought off-take cattle during the severe devastating drought of 2009 was carried out for KMC Athi River to find out the cause(s) of the problem and stem the losses. NOVEMBER, 1992. Isiolo Meat Project Feasibility Study This study was carried out by SURTECH Consulting Engineers for GTZ. Isiolo is one of the arid and semi arid Counties of northern Kenya where most of the livestock is reared. The objective of the study was to establish whether building a modern slaughterhouse at Isiolo would be a viable investment. The study team included Engineers, Agriculturists, Range Management Specialists, Economists and Veterinarians among others. My part, as one of the veterinarians, was to look at the public health aspects regarding establishment of the slaughterhouse. In 1992 I also participated in the following study:- The ALFA-LAVAL TETRA-PACK dairy industry privatization package in Kenya, an innovative proposal aiming at a complete package of milk production from the farm level to marketing and which would involve veterinary services, artificial insemination services, credit facilities to farmers, collection and cooling of milk, transportation and marketing. NOVEMBER 1991 East Pokot Baseline Data Survey for Monitoring and Evaluation This study was done by Semi Arid Lands Training and Livestock Improvement Centre of Kenya (SALTLICK) for the Freedom from Hunger Council of Kenya. Objectives were to gather economic and social data of pastoral Pokot people. The consultancy team comprised of experts in the following areas: Animal Production, (Team Leader); Range Management; Social Economist; water Resources; Livestock Marketing and Pastoral Development; Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health; Human Nutrition. I was incharge of animal health and veterinary public health. A number of problems were identified and recommendations given. OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 1991 evaluation of Katadyn water filter as a water purifier under Kenyan conditions. One-month field and laboratory tests were carried out on behalf of New Tech. Company to evaluate the ability of their katadyn water filter equipment to remove pathogenic bacteria, protozoa and parasites from water to render it safe for human consumption. The filter equipment was evaluated using tap, river, stream, pond, dam, well and borehole waters. The equipment was found to satisfactorily clarify and purify all the waters tested. The work was done by a three-man team of microbiologists and public health technicians and I was the team leader. 5

OCTOBER 1990 FAO Seminars and workshops for field Agricultural Officers responsible for extension and education of farmers in the rural areas. The workshop covered such areas as animal production and housing, food storage and preservation, extension, slaughterhouses which included construction, equipment, operations and waste disposal.
