What Is Berner Garde And How Does It Benefit Companion Owners? Berner Garde is a non profit organization that was formed to gather and disseminate health and other information related to the Bernese Mountain Dog. This information is stored in a database that is accessible online at www.bernergarde.org by anyone that is interested in learning more about: specific dogs breeders litters kennels vets and more Information is submitted by individual owners and breeders on a voluntary basis, reviewed for accuracy by a Berner Garde Data Operator and added to the database to be used by breeders, owners and others interested in the breed. When you access the website you will see a screen similar to the one below. In this hand out we will cover Submit Data this is where you would enter information about yourself or your dog and the Database itself, which can be used to see the information you are interested in. The database menu will always be on the left.
How Can Berner Garde Benefit Companion Owners And Those Considering The Breed? Research the pedigree of your dog. Are there any known health issues in the line? What is the average life of the dogs in the line is it above or below the average for the breed? Check out breeders you are considering getting a puppy or dog from. Do they provide information to Berner Garde so it can be reviewed by people interested in their dogs such as, current owners, potential owners and other breeders? Do they routinely do health screenings appropriate for the breed? Is the health testing information they have provided you accurate and complete? (Note: all health screenings reflected on Berner Garde have been confirmed prior to being added to Berner Garde) Eyes Hips/Elbows Heart Von Willebrand Disease (Like hemophilia in people where the blood doesn t clot) Reports from Veterinarians Do they provide other health, behavior/temperament, food related or any additional information? How frequently do they breed their dogs? Do they seem more interested in volume breeding rather than bettering the breed? Do the dogs they ve bred have good longevity? Other areas of interest such as: Who may have a Bernese Mountain Dog in your area? Who may have dogs that are related to your dog? Are there photos of the parents and their relatives that may give an idea of what the puppies in a litter could look like? Who has other rescued Bernese Mountain Dogs? What activities are other owners doing with their dogs? Are there Veterinarians in your area that have other Berner clients? How Can Companion Owners Help Improve The Breed? As companion owners we can also help improve the breed and actually have the MOST information to share! By taking a few moments to submit information on health, behavior/temperament, food issues/special diets, and date/cause of death you can help others to make more informed choices of their own.
Submitting information on your dog: (Submit Data) Entering information on you and your dog for the first time will only take about 15 minutes!!! It is done by clicking the Individual Dog Submission Form Link shown below. This is the link you will also use to submit information to the database about you as the owner, and also to enter or update information about your dog including: the information your vet provides on health issues, anecdotal information on behavior and temperament, what you are feeding (Raw food for example), the results of health testing done on your dog, titles earned, or any other information that you wish to share. Just complete the boxes that you have information for and click submit! If there are any questions related to the submission you will be contacted for the clarification prior to the data being added to the database. Also, if you realize after the fact that you left out information, for example you didn t check the box for rescue or you when you have more information to add at a later date, you can simply enter in the information you wish you update and click submit again and the additions will be made.

Submitting information on yourself as owner (Personal Submission Form): The Personal Information Submission Form, shown below, is where you will update the information related to yourself as the owner of your dog or dogs. When you are setting up a dog for the very first time this information is collected on the Individual Dog Submission form.
Doing Research In Berner Garde: (click on database on menu and then on the guest botton) You can find the information you are looking for by accessing the actual database. Everyone accessing this information is considered to be a guest. Once you have entered the database you will see a screen like the one shown here. This will activate the menu buttons on the left : People, Litters, Dogs, Vets, Reports, and Photos.
Below you will find many of the online search screens that you can use to find the information that you are looking for. These screens will pull up information shortly after you submit the search. For user convenience, many of the search results will also let you view other related data so that you don t need to keep going to the main search screen or report menus. For example, from the people search you can find information on the dogs that individual owns. As you use the search screens you will see that they are all intended to be very user friendly and will walk you through the information needed for the search. You will also note that they are very flexible in the information you need to provide in order to get at the information you are looking for. Just provide whatever information you have to narrow down the search and then click submit search! Note: People Search is Owners and Breeders
