Research is necessary to assure a sustainable development of this business. Fish are vertebrate animals that should been given the same considerations to welfare and protection from harm as all other research animals. Anesthesia in fish can seem complicated as the fish live in water and they are poikiloterm with more complex metabolism adapted to surrounding temperature. We do not recognize facial or body expressions of pain as easily as in land living animals and their perception of pain can be difficult to evaluate. THE FONDAZIONE GUIDO BERNARDINI TRAINING COURSES AND EVENTS Course Microbiota and gnotobiotic rodents Milan, Italy - April 12-13, 2018 Course Pathology of fish Leiden, NL - June 5-7, 2018 This two-day course is designed to provide the participants with the most recent information on the microbiota of laboratory rodents and on the use of gnotobiotic animals as experimental models. The programme of the course includes also topics related to the organization and management of facilities that breed and use such animals for research. The lectures of the renowned speakers will cover the interactions of microbiota with the host organism and, in particular, the impact on numerous aspects of animal normal physiology and on the development of many diseases. Cutting-edge information on breeding, maintenance and care of gnotobiotic rodent strains will be provided, including strategies to maintain and monitor the defined microbiota. In addition, the technological solutions available and the state of the art and prospective applications of gnotobiotic animals in research will be illustrated. Course The management of genetically altered rodent colonies Milan, Italy - May 24-25, 2018 The course introduces important aspects of managing genetically altered (GA) strains of rodents for breeding and experimental usage. The distinguished speakers will provide the participants with theoretical and practical information on the maintenance of GA strains, breeding strategies, colony management, husbandry best practices and methods to securing genetic material according to the latest views. Animal welfare and ethical aspects will also be considered. The generation of GA rodents is not a prime subject of this course. A session of the scientific programme offers the participants the opportunity to present one or more cases from their practice; the interaction between speakers and attendees encourages the sharing of information and practical experiences from which the attendees can benefit to improve their competence in the daily work. Module 2: Pathology of fish The Fondazione Guido Bernardini (FGB) and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) are proud to present the international workshop on fish pathology. The workshop is primarily addressed to veterinary and medical pathologists, PhDs and laboratory animal veterinarians. Scientists aiming to obtain a broader and deeper knowledge on fish pathology will benefit from the workshop. The programme will cover fish diseases (viral, bacterial and parasitic) and toxicologic pathology of selected tissues. The participants will be able to present and discuss cases with renewed fish pathologists from leading research institutions. Gross pathology and histopathology sessions dedicated to veterinarians preparing for the ECLAM and ECVP boards will be included. Registration fee: 700 euro Course Microbiological monitoring of rodents: traditional and innovative approaches Milan, Italy - October 11-12, 2018 During this two-day course the participants are guided by expert instructors through the traditional, as well more innovative procedures (e.g., sentinels-free approach) for health monitoring, the interpretation of results and action plans in case of confirmed infection. The content of the course includes: traditional and emerging agents, relevant international guidelines, selection of laboratory techniques for health monitoring, including innovative techniques such as EAD-PCR, screening of incoming animals and biological samples, control of the macro- and micro-environment, disaster plan in case of confirmed infection. The influence of microbiota on animal models and monitoring techniques will also be discussed. Simulation of health monitoring schemes will be delivered through interactive theoretical sessions; a workshop will present a hypothetical scenario, with needs and limitations, providing the participants with the opportunity to developed their own programme with the support of the trainers Recipients: Facility managers and supervisors, veterinarians, senior technologists, laboratory technicians, quality assurance managers, persons responsible for overseeing the welfare and care of animals.
