Lambing Planner Time of Joining/Lambing Choosing the optimum time to lamb relies on many factors. Production per hectare is maximised when lactation (peak feed demand) matches the time of the peak supply of cheap green feed but there are other important considerations. Having ewes in good condition at joining lambing percentage increases with increasing Condition Score (CS) to a maximum of CS 3.5. Using the natural breeding season (Feb-April) to gain higher fertility. Meeting a specific market for lamb turnoff. The risk of poor weather at lambing Timing of mulesing and flystrike risk in spring. Being able to feed weaners to grow. Minimising wool quality faults such as VM and to fit in with other farming operations. Merinos do respond to teasing out of the natural breeding season. Ram Preparation and Joining Percentage At least 8 weeks prior to joining, inspect for faults, particularly testes and penis. Sick rams need 8 weeks after recovery to produce healthy sperm. Cull any rams with abnormal genitals, feet or teeth. Don t crutch or shear rams during this time as infections from cuts especially to the scrotum can stop sperm production. Rams need maximum, testes size to work effectively. To ensure this, feed lupins at up to 750 g/h/d for the 8 weeks up to joining (feeding rates may be lower if paddock nutrition is very good). Ensure you have adequate numbers of rams for joining. Fit, healthy rams should be used at a minimum of 1% (with a minimum 4 rams per mob). Join mature rams to maiden ewes. Immature rams tend to have smaller testes size and therefore lower sperm production so a minimum of 2% should be used. With a highly synchronized joining or out of breeding season joining it is safer to use 3%.
Use of Teasers Sheep cycle spontaneously in late summer. If joining before 1 st February, use teasers to ensure that ewes are ready to conceive at the beginning of joining. Teasers also stimulate more ewes to come into oestrus. This produces a closer lambing and makes managing the ewes and lambs easier. Teasing for 14 days followed by a 35 day joining is recommended. Teasers can be testosterone treated wethers (or ewes) or vasectomised rams. If using vasectomised rams, they must be removed at the start of joining; wethers can be left in the mob until the rams are removed (unless they are large and aggressive and likely to compete with rams for ewes). Inject teasers with testosterone 7 days prior to being used. Teasers should be used at 1% for 14 days before entire rams go in (day 14). Teasers must be introduced directly to the mob to ensure that all ewes make contact as soon as possible. Ewe Preparation for Joining Condition score/live weight at joining has a major effect on ovulation rate and early embryo mortality. Ewes in poor condition and maidens below 40kg may not cycle. Best results have been obtained with ewes in CS 3 at joining. Flocks at or below CS 2 will have a low reproductive rate. Both fertility and twinning increase dramatically as the average CS increases to 3 (there is little further benefit for flocks fatter than average CS 3.5). Other methods to stimulate the ovulation rate are; the use of Ovastim injections or to feed ewes 500g/h lupins daily from 7 days prior to rams going in and continue for no more than 7 days after (note ewes are more likely to respond to lupin feeding if they are less than CS 3 and it is suggested that ewes be fed daily rather than twice weekly) or join on ungrazed lupin stubbles. Be prepared to manage the extra twins generated twinning ewes will need higher nutrition in pregnancy and lactation. Nutrition of Pregnant and Lactating Ewes The ewe has an increasing feed demand, especially twin bearing ewes, in the last 6 weeks before birth. Ewes that are pregnant while green feed is available need 700-1000kg DM/ha of pasture (FOO) during late pregnancy and 1500-2500kg DM/ha FOO during lactation otherwise they will need supplementary feeding. Feeding barley for 7 days prior to birth can lift colostrum levels which can aid lamb survival in a tightly synchronized joining. Feed 100g/h/d from day -10 of lambing and then by day -5 feed 600g/h/d and continue for 2 weeks after the 1 st lamb is born. Lactating ewes appetite and feed demand increases immediately after birth and ewes require at least 2.5 times that of a dry sheep for maximum milk production. Definitions for Ram Sale Catalogue S.D is the standard deviation of fibre diameter. It is a measure of the fibre diameter variation within the sample. The smaller the S.D value, the more evenly sized the fibres are. Good S.D values are lower than 4.0. C.V this is the co-efficient of variation of fibre diameter. As a guideline, in mature good nutritionally fed wools the C.V of good test results should be lower than 20% whilst poor tests greater than 23%. C.F is Comfort Factor as a processing guide, expressed in %, the comfort factor is associated with wools that have their fibres less than 30 microns. BWT is the body weight taken on 13/9/17 FAT is the actual fat depth taken on 13/6/17 EMD is the actual Eye Muscle Depth taken on 13/6/17 ASBV s Definitions Australian Sheep Breeding Value s (ASBV) are an estimate of the genetic potential a sheep will pass onto it s progeny and are designed to be used in conjunction with a visual assessment. YCFW Yearling Fleece Weight (%) FW Estimates the genetic difference between animals for clean fleece weight at 360 days of age. Rams with higher figures for YCFW will produce progeny that will cut more wool. YFD Fibre Diameter micron, estimates the genetic difference in fibre diameter at 360 days of age. Rams with more negative figures will produce progeny with a finer micron. YWT Yearling Weight, estimates the genetic difference in yearling weight at 360 days of age. The higher the YWT figure, the more likely rams are to produce progeny that grow more quickly and are heavier at a certain age.
New Indexes There have been changes to the standard index on Merino Select. Where the index names have a plus+ after them they include more traits and the fertility figures are taken from actual lambing figures rather than estimates from measurements such as scrotal and body weight. Studs not gathering accurate lambing and ewe pedigree information will not have indexes with a plus +. Index MP+ Merino Production This index ranks animals on their ability to produce progeny for a wool operation that s income is a balance of both surplus sheep sales and wool. After 10 years of using the production Indexes you would be likely to get the following gains. POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN LOOKING AFTER YOUR VALUABLE INVESTMENTS 1. YEAR ROUND MANAGEMENT Look after your rams and keep them in score 3 condition all year round. Shearing rams twice a year may need to be considered. Semen takes about six weeks to form and mature and for this reason it is not advisable to do anything to rams that can effect semen quality within 6 weeks of mating. Practices such as shearing, horn cutting and foot trimming should be done more than 6 weeks before mating. This includes any handling of rams in such a way that they are tonguing as this may cause semen damage. Do not run young rams with older rams until after their first joining. This will reduce the risk of injury to your young rams. 2. PREMATING MANAGEMENT Research has shown that lupin feeding prior to mating has a marked effect on semen quality and volume. Approximately 500g/1kg head/day after a breaking in period is plenty to achieve a result. It is needed for at least 4 weeks leading up to mating and possibly 4-6 weeks depending on the season. All rams should pass a physical examination prior to mating to ensure there are no problems with testicles, penis and scrotum. 3. MATING LOADS The optimum joining period is for two cycles; that is five-six weeks. If possible, do not mate old rams and young rams together because of domination. 4. RAM HEALTH Ensure rams are drenched at strategic times along with the rest of the flock. Before and after joining may be beneficial as this is the time of stress. In addition give all rams an annual 6 in 1 booster irrespective of age. Keep rams feet trimmed if necessary to reduce the risk of foot abscess. Keep rams clicked on the poll and round horns during the fly season to avoid strike and losses.
