There are also contacts for Malinois rescues in Canada listed on the ABMC site. American Belgian Laekenois Association (ABLA) http://www.belgianlaekenoisclub.us/. The web site shows many pictures. Rescue contact: Lara Teresi email: rescue@belgianlaekenoisclub.us Please take time to read over these websites so that you are prepared when and if you see a BSD in need of rescue. There is a wealth of information about BSD s in general on them as well as a realistic picture of what is going on in rescue of our BSDs. GUIDELINES: 1. UBSDA rescue seeks to assist in rescue of purebred BSDs of all varieties. We cannot use the club's funds to help mixed breed dogs, although very often individuals within the clubs will go out of their way to network for such dogs or help privately. 2. UBSDA rescue can assist with paying pull fees and some transport costs if needed as dogs are moved from a pound/shelter. We cannot be responsible for dogs from known breeders except in very rare cases -- we do not do rehomes; again, however, many individuals may individually be willing to network for such dogs privately. 3. UBSDA rescue is unique in that we consider all varieties equally. Of course individual foster homes and volunteers may have variety preferences because of experience or contacts and these are respected. AKC Belgian rescue groups are very specific about which variety they can assist but they are also larger so are the organizations of final disposition in most cases. UBSDA does not officially foster or adopt dogs. 4. UBSDA's budget for rescue is extremely limited when considering our relative number of members and the fact that it must extend to cover all four varieties. Because of this we will work closely with other rescues to make the best use of our money and volunteers. Funds are available through private requests for special medical costs, pull fees and transport assistance. 5. The greatest need cited by all rescuers helping BSDs of all varieties now is for hands on assistance through transport, identification, short or long term fostering, referrals, education and networking. Please contact the appropriate variety contact for the dogs you will work with or contact me for more information on these or to be put to work. Volunteering to help does not obligate you to be "on call". The more volunteers who are available and trained and in contact with each other the more moral support we all will have and the more quickly we will be able to save dogs in need. 4

President s report: None Corresponding Secretary report: I have mailed out the dues renewal notices. This reminded me that we had talked about setting up a PayPal option for taking payments. I know I will be getting requests to take dues payments through PayPal. I believe Dan will be indisposed for a period, but if we are keeping the Chase account, it is something I can set up. I'm pretty sure there is a fee which we should include if used. Included in the mailing is a nomination form for the 2020 UBSDA National judge. I have added Mary Falcone and Sue Mills to the Yahoo group so they can watch how we operate before having to participate. They will have to accept the invitation before receiving any of the emails. Sandy: Good idea. Most do that. Lisa: Another great idea Cindy, let's do it! Ginnie: A great idea! Michael: Thanks, Cindy! You really keep the rest of us on top of everything and it is very much appreciated! Treasurer s report: None NEW BUSINESS: Request for Specialty and Judge Approval: Lisa: This is a letter I received from the Acadia club. I move that we approve Pauline as their judge. From: Pam Date: Tue, Oct 2, 2018, 8:01 AM Subject: Request for Specialty and Judge Approval To: <fastbreak.tervuren@gmail.com> Cc: Deb Catell Dear Lisa, The Acadia Belgian Shepherd Dog Club is busy planning its annual show weekend for 2019. After a long history of putting together small, intimate multi-breed shows to help defray the costs needed to fund our Belgian classes, the UKC in 2017 insisted our shows expand to include groups (2018), and going forward (2019), UKC is requiring us to provide All-Breed shows and provide a breed specialty every two years. These new rules has been concerning to our club officers and membership, because our shows have grown and taken away the intimacy and focus on our Belgians. Our club was founded on the principal of offering AA/Critiques, but with the increased demands from UKC, we have had to balance the needs of adding All-Breed shows, and needing to find judges that would attract and retain other 5

breeds, as well as attract and retain our Belgians. For the first time, we are faced with adding All-Arounder judges to our shows, which we feel takes away from our commitment of offering only AA/Critiques by our esteemed breeder-judges. We are very concerned about the increasing demands and complexities relating to events put on by our club, and are worried about our club s continued sustainability. After a successful but lightly (Belgian) attended 2018 show, the Club took this decline in Belgian attendance seriously, and is looking into ways to address this. After years of cycling quickly through our roster of Belgian breeder judges, we thought it would be worth exploring the possibility of inviting a judge from overseas - not to judge at a specialty, but rather to judge only the classes of Belgians as part of one of our three All-Breed shows. On Aug. 18, Deb Catell, our Show Correspondence Secretary, reached out to you to request advice, and we were advised that the judge must be FCIapproved. Following this, we contacted the UKC to request permission to have Pauline Koning-Stern Hanf as our judge for the Belgian classes, and UKC responded (10/1/2018), accepting Pauline s qualifications and approving that she judge for us. Pauline, in turn, has accepted our invitation. We selected Pauline, in part, because she judged at the only specialty held in Maine - in 1995 for the UBSDA Nationals, and would love for her to come back, and she has expressed interest in doing so. We request UBSDA's approval in allowing Pauline Koning -Stern Hanf to return to Maine to judge our 1st Bi-Annual Regional Specialty. SHOW DATES: July 20-21, 2019 [3 All-Breed UKC shows, and 1 Regional Specialty] LOCATION: Capital Park, Augusta, Maine CLASSES OFFERED: Regular Conformation, Altered Conformation, Novice Puppy, and Veterans. Jr. Showmanship is offered at each of our all-breed UKC shows, therefore will not be offered during the Specialty. EVENT MANAGER: Philip A Tanner, 635 Hancheet St, St. Charles, MI 48655 VOLUNTEERS: Deborah & Scott Catell, Pam Anderson, Lori Koshowski, Donna Mercer, and several volunteers from United Dog Sports of Northern New England [a local UKC club] that have offered to steward for our shows, and several scribes.. We very much appreciate your consideration of our proposal, and look forward to learning your decision so that we can move ahead with the necessary preparations. Warm regards, Pamela V Anderson, Vice-President Acadia Belgian Shepherd Dog Club bowhaus@maine.rr.com Cathi: I second Approval of judging motion: Aye: CF, LK, TM, MH, GP, CB, DP, SS, WSO Nay: None Abstain: None Did not vote: None Approved. Lisa: I will let Acadia know the motion was approved. Idea for Membership Drive Cindy: I have an idea to increase membership. Any member in good standing sponsoring 2 new members successfully in a calendar year gets their next year s membership free. Since an application requires 2 signatures each sponsor gets credit. If sponsor is part of a household membership, unless both sign the application, the fee is reduced by $37 (the amount of a single membership). Lisa: Great idea Cindy! Wende: I think that's an excellent idea Cindy!! Sandy: Super idea, Cindy. Wish it had always been there. I might be able to add a few. Makes a difference when you are retired on limited income. OLD BUSINESS: Nominating Committee: Cindy: I received no nominations from the membership in response to the announcement recently mailed. Nor did I receive any requests for an extension due to the short suspense. The slate stands as nominated and may be announced at the annual meeting. No ballot is necessary. Lisa: New people are Mary Falcone, director and Sue Mills treasurer, correct? Michael Herrin and Sandy Shaw will be serving a 2nd term. Adjournment: October 20 Respectfully submitted by Cathi Blackburn. UBSDA Beacon Facebook Group If you want updates regarding Beacon deadlines, photos, announcements regarding events, etc. please email cathi.blackburn@gmail.com to request joining the group. Cindy: Second the motion 6

JANE ROTHERT Indiana October 28: The UBSDA National was fun with great friends and beautiful dogs. UNIK won her working Sweeps class and then for a great thrill she won Reserve Champion at the regional specialty on Thursday. I was excited when she made the cut, but to get Reserve over beautiful champions, was amazing. JEFF and KAREN SIMCHAK Michigan October 28: Great week at Purina Farms and the UBSDA 2018 National Specialty. 12

JARAH month puppy class (co owned by Patricia Mole and us). ICON'S MANDOLIN RAIN DE L'AURORE received excellent ratings all week with two seconds and a third. And Icon Belgian Shepherds took BEST KENNEL IN SHOW. OWEN and SANDY DEATRICK Michigan September 30 - We entered the UKC BARKC show 1 in the morning and LEGEND was BEST IN SHOW under judge Pennie Jackson. ANN MACKAY Minnesota October 27: MASKI DU VAN LAPPEENRANTA JUMBO was Reserve Male at the 2018 UBSDA National Specialty under Judge Babs Robinson of the UK. BARB BENNER Washington November 4: ZENITH, two days after turning 13, qualified in UKC RO3 (98) and RO2 (96) for the last leg of her URX (United Rally Excellent) title. (10 double Qs, like the RAE in AKC.) Very glad she did it today, as the next UKC opportunity in the area is June 2019 and a lot can happen with an elderly dog in that time. She gets SO wound up in rally that she gets out ahead of me, and getting her to do left turns is really a challenge, especially SWEET with her "I'm an old dog and I'm doing this my way" attitude. On the second day of the UKC trials in Spokane, LINK got her second UCDX leg, and her first URO2 leg (100, second place behind BIJOU). BIJOU didn't bring her brain into the Utility ring this morning, but she found it again for Open and then earned two perfect scores in rally this afternoon. CATHI BLACKBURN Kentucky November 10-11: EDGE and I competed in Novice B at the Evansville Obedience Club obedience trials in Evansville, IN. He earned two legs with two second places. On Sunday he had a 199 going into the last exercise, the recall, and did an automatic finish and ended with a 196. Please send your trial and show news to Cathi Blackburn at cathi.blackburn@gmail.com Photos are appreciated 13
