AKC Delegate: Judi Roller judi002@centurytel.net President s Message There are still many openings for working at the Dairyland Classic Dog Show on May 4 & 6. This event is one of our biggest fund raisers of the year and it is expected that all members participate at least 2 hours, even if you are not involved in conformation. (if you are in the hospital, we'll let you have a pass - thanks!) We have spots for people who need to sit and for those who can stand and get around. Friday especially needs helpers.particularly important are people at the entry gates collecting parking for each vehicle. Selling catalogs, raffle tickets, steward at ringside for your favorite breeds. Most positions train on the spot, no experience required. Free meal for workers. And not to mention getting to see over 1000 dogs in a huge variety of breeds on each day. Sign ups are at BKC on the front table or on the facebook page using SignUpGenius. Or email Terry bkcshowchair@gmail.com and she can sign you up. https://www.facebook.com/dairylandclassicdogshowbkc/ Lynda Nelson BKC President Treasurer s Report Please see the attached sheets provided by Ann Koski. **MEMO** To: BKC Committee and Special Event Chairs From: BKC Board Re: Vouchers and Other Volunteer Benefits Date: April 25 2018 For your reference, this Memo outlines the Board s position regarding vouchers and other volunteer benefits. Vouchers and Door Prizes (sometimes erroneously called Raffles ) can no longer be offered free to volunteers. Doing so, violates IRS rules and puts our BKC taxexempt status at risk. The Badger Kennel Club is a 501(c)4 organization under IRS rules. The paragraph below is taken from the IRS website - please note the second sentence which says that the earnings of the organization may not inure to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual. "To be tax-exempt as a social welfare organization described in Internal Revenue Code (IRC) section 501(c)(4), an organization must not be organized for profit and must be operated exclusively to promote social welfare. The earnings of a section 501(c)(4) organization may not inure to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual. According to both a tax accountant and lawyer who were consulted about free vouchers, door prizes, and raffles, such actions are in violation of the IRS directives noted above. Both professionals said that a volunteer recognition event (as part of a structured, Board and Membership approved volunteer program) to recognize all BKC volunteers, no matter what event or activity they worked for, would be appropriate. The BKC Board is now working to implementing this option. Any expenditure for any type of compensation or volunteer benefit(s) must be preapproved by the Board.
