THE COURSING ABILITY TEST (CAT) The Coursing Ability Test (CAT) is a pass/fail event. Dogs run singularly. In order to pass, the dog must complete the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within the maximum amount of time for the course length. The judge keeps the official time and decides the merits of the dog s performance. Dogs can run with or without a collar. Collars should be buckle without tags, and should not interfere with breathing or movement. For the safety of the dog and as a courtesy to others, your dog should have a reliable recall. Lure coursing is a physically demanding sport so please be sure your dog is in good condition for such activity. Dogs that are old, have breathing or heart problems, are overweight, or are out of condition may be at greater risk for injury and exhaustion. If you are not sure, make an appointment with a veterinarian to get an opinion. Handlers should wear comfortable, sturdy shoes (no sandals or flip flops, please!) and be physically able to hold and release their dogs, as well as catch them. 3. This is an outdoor event. Please have all the items for protection from sun and weather for you and your dog, for all possible weather conditions we may experience at that time of year. 4. There is a $10 fine for dogs loose on the field but not in that course. Please have suitable containment for your dog. It is advised to keep dogs and children away from the course to reduce risk of any incident. 5. Handlers may carry toys or whistle, etc but not food on their persons to assist with retrieving their dog at the completion of their run. 6. Dogs will be brought to the start line on leash and released only upon a verbal signal ( Tally-Ho! ) from the Hunt Master. Dogs may be released by hand, folded leash, or using a traditional lure coursing slip lead. 7. The Hunt Master will instruct the handler to Retrieve your dog upon completion of the run. The handler is expected to promptly secure the dog and leave the field with the dog on leash. 8. Handlers are advised to warm up their dogs prior to their run and walk them for about 10 minutes afterwards. 9. Dogs may wear a collar except for a choke collar, a collar with prongs or an electronic training collar. The collar should be fit properly to minimize the chances of getting hung up on something during the run. Tags hanging from a collar could become entangled on something during a run. Owners may use clips or rubber bands to hold the dog s hair. The owner assumes the responsibility for the safety of the dog with regard to the dog s collar and paraphernalia on the dog.
