SECTION A Read Text A and answer questions 1 7. Text A You are interested in unusual pets and read this leaflet in a pet shop. Have you ever thought of keeping a pet snake? Meet the corn snake Have you ever thought of keeping a snake? Snakes have become increasingly popular as pets in the past ten years because they are fascinating creatures and, if treated with respect, will trust their owners. There are many types of snakes, for example California kingsnakes, that can become very tame and are remarkably hygienic. Responsible pet shops will only sell snakes that are bred in captivity because snakes like adders, which are caught in the wild, can be unhappy and stressed if kept at home and are also prone to illnesses and diseases. Many people think that corn snakes are an excellent choice for absolute beginners. Corn snakes are usually dark yellow and originally came from south east USA, where grain farmers store corn which attracts vermin such as rats. These rats attract corn snakes that are active during the night when the temperature cools down. Corn snakes are not poisonous and are usually very calm. Although they live on the ground, they are also excellent climbers and will always try to escape. Housing them is easy: they must be kept in secure glass tanks with a heat pad and a water bowl. They will need a hide, for example a paper towel roll, and do not need special lighting but they do like small logs in their tanks. They are small when born but can grow up to six feet long and can live for more than twenty years. They are easy to breed and become used to being handled. Every few days corn snakes should be fed highly nutritious food that can be specially bought from pet shops. Beginners should never try to keep large snakes like boa constrictors, as these need special feeding and housing as well as expert handling. Water snakes are also not suitable for beginners. 2 *P58645A0212*

SECTION B Read Text B and answer questions 8 13. Text B You read this email. lucy37@yourmail.web evonne1988@yourmail.web Sid Good afternoon Lucy, Many thanks for offering to look after my snake Sid whilst I visit Mexico and Venezuela for six months. It s extraordinarily generous of you. Any problems, text me. Sid is a Columbian boa constrictor. He is very laid-back, always curious and he enjoys human company. He delights in exploring so I'd keep him in his tank but if you decide to allow him out, watch him closely. Originally constrictors lived in South America. Sid is about 5 feet long which makes him a little small for a constrictor in the wild sometimes males can be 7 feet and females even longer. They are excellent climbers and live for between 20 and 30 years, though my next door neighbour Ken boasts that his Costa Rican boa is now 37. I ve taken Ken s advice and kept Sid s accommodation simple just a large, tough plastic box with one side warmer than the other. It s important that you check these using the thermostats the hot side should be 30 degrees Celsius and the cool side 25 degrees. There is a heat pad in the middle which you need to check it should be 32 degrees and is where Sid likes to coil up. You do need to turn the lighting on and off every day and when you clean the box, do make sure you put fresh newspaper on the floor. Feeding is no problem. There are some tasty delicacies in the freezer. Make sure these are completely thawed out before you give them to Sid. Feed him once every fortnight he must not become obese and ensure his water bowl is topped up. You ll enjoy Sid s company he s a great guy and really friendly. If there is a catastrophe, ask Ken or go to Snakes R Usss on Eden Street. Enormous thanks, Evonne 6 *P58645A0612*
