We run, do agility, farm, & more Our Club Shines... Club s President on TV Lincolnwood Training Club's President Bobby Stevens shared what our Club is all about with Phil Flynn of FOX Business News during an interview televised on Ch. 32 in early September. Bobby said that the Club, founded in 1939, originated at a small Near North park. It later moved to Bobby and Lili its current, 2 1/2- acre, home in Glenview in 1965. Bobby said that the Club's mission is to encourage a bond and companionship between a dog and its owner and to dispel rumors of "protection dog" negativity about the breed. "One of our biggest programs is one that trains our dogs to be therapy dogs," he added. " Many of our members and their Shepherds now visit hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, and schools. "Our Club also raises money to buy protective vests for police dogs. So far, we've vested 15 police dogs." Ghost is Best Running Partner Ever Jessica Nellis is training for her THIRD half marathon (13.1 miles) with her running partner, a white German Shepherd named Ghost. She had this to say: "We just started a 12-week training program with an "easy" (ha!) run of 2 miles. "While dogs are not allowed to run the course, you can bet that my Ghost will be there cheering me on! "Every 2 weeks we'll add more distance. I believe our longest run is 9 miles. "Ghost is a lot better runner than I am. "In fact, she's the best running partner EVER!!" Jessica and Ghost Nohea s Tail a Prize-winner!! Our German Shepherds are famous for excelling in a wide range of activities, but Patti Barra's Nohea did one better. Nohea earned a first place for having the longest tail (21 inches) at a Deerfield Family Days dog show event held in July. There were many categories and prizes (ie. tallest and shortest dog, most obedient/ tricks, and owner-dog look-alike). City Slicker Cassidy passes Farm Dog Test Nohea Congratulations, Nohea. Wave that prize tail proudly! Cassidy Look who just passed AKC's newest program, the Farm Dog Certified (FDC) test. It's city slicker Wendy Israel's Cassidy. Cassidy also earned her Scentwork Container Advanced (SCA) and Scentwork Exterior Advanced (SCA) titles. "She's maybe a little grayer, but Cassidy's still going strong at 10," Wendy says. Lincolnwood Training Club member and agility legend Anne Riba retires from AKC agility judging. Anne Riba "So many adventures and so little time! "This weekend (July 29, 2018) wraps up my AKC judging career! "It is bittersweet as I have always enjoyed being an AKC agility judge and all the wonderful people I have met on this 16-year journey. "I have been able to watch some of the best handlers and dogs as well as the thousands of us who love to run and play with our dogs. I've made so many friends across the country and overseas thanks to judging. "I've had the opportunity to judge in almost 30 states as well as the AKC Nationals, World Team tryouts, European Open tryouts, and the Westminster Kennel Club Show. "It's been an amazing journey that would not have been possible without the support of my Apex friends, especilly Liz Balderstone, Ashlee Trotter, and JoAnn Bergquist. Thank you Carrie Elks DeYoung for all your support. "Hoping to see everyone somewhere along the way in the future. Time to run my dogs!" --- Anne Riba (Photos, top to bottom) Anne, a beloved malinois, and a retirement cake. Nyx I 3.

TRAINING CORNER... Distractions Training: Be the Squirrel The thing about dog training is getting your dog to pay attention to you and your cues rather than ecstatically sniffing the butt of the dog next to him. You may have seen the t-shirt sold at dog shows that says, MY DOG CAN DO A 200 (a perfect score) IN MY BACK YARD (where the two of you presumably are peacefully alone with no disturbances). Better to consider another slogan championed by wise dog trainers far and wide that says, BE THE SQUIRREL. Join Lincolnwood training instructor Dave Perry s 9:00 a.m. Sunday class on distractions and you indeed can learn to be that pesky, attention-grabbing rodent and ultimately have a more attentive dog. Another Lincolnwood training instructor, Stu Unger, also understands the value of distractions while dog training and likes to start his canine pupils young. He s added distractions to his 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Advanced Puppy class for some time now. Whether this all means somebody riding a bike past you as you encourage your dog s undivided attention with a high-value treat, or playing your way past distractions, come take advantage of Club training. --- The Editor Guest dog trainer Paul Strubbe (photo above, left), rides a bike as a distraction while students like Jane Eastman (photo above, right) and her pup, Vlad, and another student (photo top right) try for undivided attention. HEALTH CORNER...... Report on Research Strategies to Treat Canine Hemangiosarcomas (Editor s Note: For those of us who have lost a dog to hemangiosarcoma - and we are legion - the only heartening thing about this incurable cancer is that research continues for new ways of treatment and improving the long-term prognosis in affected dogs. Hemangiosarcoma (HGS) is a drugresistant cancer of the cells lining the blood vessels that is very aggressive and has nearly always spread by the time it is diagnosed. The tumors often grow quickly, with half of all dogs dying within six months of diagnosis, even with surgical and chemotherapy treatment. Certain breeds considered to be highrisk for this common cancer in dogs include the German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, and Boxer. Virtually no improvements in outcome for affected dogs have occurred in the past 30 years despite multiple clinical trials and research efforts. However, this failure is not for lack of continued trying. To date, the American German Shepherd Dog Charitable Foundation, the Morris Animal Foundation, and the AKC Canine Canine Health Foundation have funded research grants for researchers to gain a better understanding of the biology and progression of this disease. The goal is to design new and effective approaches to treatment. The following is a brief synopsis of a few of the current research efforts sponsored by the above foundations.) THE AMERICAN GERMAN SHEP- HERD DOG CHARITABLE FOUNDATION sponsored a study titled A Novel Mechanism to Regulate the Growth of Canine Hemangiosarcoma. We found that hemangiosarcoma cells appear to rely on the metabolism of lipids (fatty acids) to supply some of the energy and essential building blocks needed for tumor growth, says researcher Erin Dickerson, PhD, University of Minnesota. We also found that propranolol, a common drug used to treat heart disease in both dogs and people, limits the uptake of lipids into cells and blocks the cell s ability to process these compounds. Because propranolol can block the use of lipids by tumor cells, propranolol may be able to reverse the cancer-imposed metabolic reprogramming on normal cells, limiting tumor growth. Future studies, Dickerson says, will be directed toward further assessing the metabolic programs of HGS and determining whether drugs like propranolol can reduce tumor growth and invasion. THE MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION sponsored a study s final report titled Testing Strategies to Treat Drug-resistant Hemangiosarcomas. The researchers targets, according to the study, were cells important in tumor growth, spread, and drug responses. The research team successfully identified a drug-resistant cell population within HGS tumors that may be an important player in chemotherapy resistance. The study identified a key mechanism In chemotherapy resistance in HGS tumors. Understanding how cancer cells hijack and block drugs from reaching their targets will help researchers develop more effective treatments for this difficult-to-treat cancer in dogs. THE AKC CANINE HEALTH FOUNDATION sponsored a study titled Identification of Novel Synthetic Lethal Partners to optimize P13K Targeted Therapies in Canine Hemangiosarcoma. Principal investigator was Cheryl London, DVM, PhD, Tufts Medical Center. Investigators generated data showing that a subset of canine HGS tumors possess genetic mutations in P13K known to activate the pathway in cancer cells. The information will be leveraged to identify new ways to block this pathway using a combination of small molecule inhibitors that are most effective at killing tumor cells. These data will then be used to design future clinical trials in dogs with HGS. (Sources: agsdcf.com/what-agsdcf-does; www.morrisanimalfoundation.org/study; www.akcchf.org/research) 8.
