President s Corner Surprise! We are back to having communication within the club! This special issue of Gold Diggings is compliments of new member, Cynthia Schmidt, who is very long on the computer skills I lack. After this edition, Kathy Bourland has kindly listened to our plaintive pleas and will serve as editor of our club newsletter. Thanks to both of these talented ladies for stepping up when we need help! On August 4, Steve and Chris Johnson invited the club to their corner of paradise for a picnic. The people had fun and ate well but the DOGS had the best time! It always thrills me to see many goldens running and playing with no signs of aggression or unease. We probably had 25 dogs of all ages and persuasions and they had a wonderful time swimming and diving and running and retrieving. I ll bet they all slept well and had great doggie dreams. Thanks Steve and Chris for an enjoyable day! At the picnic, arms were twisted and Maureen Murphy and Kathy Winch volunteered to assemble a Colorado club basket for the host club to auction at the National. If you have any Colorado themed items you would like to donate, notify Maureen or Kathy. Not to be outdone by his volunteering bride, Keith Winch has agreed to fill the Board vacancy as Field Rep. Our thanks go to Keith for stepping in at almost the last minute to rescue this year s Hunt Test. Just the sound of his name has inspired another huge entry at the Master level of our Hunt Test. Ah, the magic of Keith!!! During the picnic, we held a brief business meeting primarily for the purpose of discussing/explaining the concept of back-to-back specialties (2 days in a row for the uninitiated). Barb sent out the report of the Committee that was formed to investigate this issue. Club members have been bitching (dare I say it that way?) about our Independent Specialty show being held on a Monday after the Flatirons shows in June. The Committee explored various options and the one that appeared to be most workable was for MHGRC to hold their shows before the August Greeley KC shows. Anne and Barb have made several trips to Island Grove to meet with GKC show people to discuss the facilities. After deliberation, it was our recommendation that we combine with Greeley for a year or two to see if this meets with greater approval (less bitching) from our membership. After discussion, the members present voted to approve this plan of action. So, MHGRC will talk again with GKC to firm up plans for next August. We will have volunteers to serve as Show Chairs but, for 2013 only, Anne and Barb will select the judges for these two shows to avoid any appearance of partiality. MHGRC should, in the near future, form a task force to establish the ground rules for Judges Selection for MHGRC events. 2

President s Corner- continued In the past, the Show Chair has always selected the conformation judge for the event but this approach hasn t been without controversy. After some particularly unpleasant snarking at our last specialty, it is time to re-examine the methods used! But for now it seems to me (personal comment) that if you don t trust the integrity and knowledge of the judges selected, don t enter! Save me the pain of listening to your petty concerns! While we have expended considerable effort in listening to member thoughts on the concept of back-to-back shows, I want to point out in advance that unless people begin stepping up to serve as MHGRC Officers and Board Members, all these discussions are for nothing. This year Barb Branstad is stepping down as V-P and the NC is going to try to find someone to serve in that capacity for the next year and then take over as President the following year. It appears that we will also need a Secretary and Conformation Representative for the coming year. These are important positions and the club needs help. Otherwise, if there are no officers then there is no club and that means no shows, agility trials or hunt events in the name of MHGRC. My term ends in 2013 and if there are no volunteers, the club goes away. This is when you will figure out that Anne and Barb have taken the treasury and gone to pursue their dream - being rhythmic gymnasts in Belarus. Our next club meeting will be Friday, September 21 at Training with Grace Center located at the Meadowlark Hills Shopping Center, W. 6 th and Garrison St, in Lakewood. This beautiful facility is next to the Szechuan Chinese Restaurant SE corner of the intersection. We have the use of the building from 5 until whenever we quit talking! If you would like to bring dogs and train prior to the meeting, just let me know. All types of equipment will be available. Between the training session and the meeting which will start at 7, the club will bring in some Chinese munchies from the restaurant next door. Training, eating and talking will be the order of the evening. Our program will be FitPAWS - stressing exercises for conditioning any canine with an emphasis on our performance dogs! I must apologize for the non-existence of the newsletter for the past couple of months. The fault is mine for not acting more quickly to remedy a situation and then the attached articles sat in my computer for a few additional weeks while I dithered hopelessly. Those of you who know Kathy Bourland are aware that she will rescue us from this unfortunate situation. Anne Shannon 3

Meeting Minutes Selected Notes In lieu of official Meeting Minutes, below are selected notes from various meetings Maureen Murphy and Kathy Winch volunteered to assemble a Colorado club basket for the host club to auction at the National. If you have any Colorado themed items you would like to donate, notify Maureen or Kathy. Keith Winch has agreed to fill the Board vacancy as Field Rep. The membership voted on the issue of holding of back-to-back specialties. It was agreed by vote that MHGRC will hold their shows before the August Greeley KC shows. Going forward, we will combine with Greeley for a year or two and evaluate if this meets our club needs. It was recommended that MHGRC should, in the near future, form a task force to establish the ground rules for Judges Selection for MHGRC events. It was announced that Barb Branstad will be stepping down as Vice President of MHGRC at the end of her term this year. Thanks Barb, for all your hard work! We already know we will need volunteers to fill several roles for MHGRC for the upcoming term: Vice President, Secretary and Conformation Rep. Anne also announced that 2013 will be her last year serving as President. Thanks Anne, for continuing on for one more year! MHGRC members we need to be thinking about who will fill these shoes come next year. Kathy Bourland has kindly volunteered to serve as editor of our club newsletter. 4

Obedience and Rally Happy springtime everyone! My name is Monica Keracik and I am the obedience representative for 2012. I have been a proud member of the MHGRC since September 2008. I got my first Golden, Princess Corona II (Corona), in February 2008, and we have been working very diligently doing obedience and rally. She currently has her CD and RAE and we are now training for her CDX and UD. She is also a registered therapy dog and we have visited patients in the Medical Center of Aurora, children with special needs at the University of Denver Night Owls Respite Program, students at the Aurora Academy Charter School, and children at the immunization clinics in the Denver area. Corona is a very sweet and smart girl and I am very proud of her and her accomplishments! In July 2011, I got my second Golden, High Country s Tally Ho Tebow (Tebow). He is currently 10 months old and I have been doing competitive obedience training with him since he was 8 weeks old. He just recently passed his CGC test on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 9 months old and I am planning to do therapy dog work with him soon. Tebow is a very handsome and smart boy and I anticipate great achievements with him! The March 2012 obedience/rally specialty fun match was a big success and lots of fun! My husband and I enjoyed helping set up and take down the rings, stewarding in the obedience rings and taking photographs of the event. Plus I still had plenty of time to work everything I wanted to with my own two dogs! Please remember to submit for the next newsletter to monica.keracik@yahoo.com For the remainder of 2012, we are looking forward to the independent specialty on June 4 th as well as the all-breed fun match in December. Volunteering at these events is worthwhile and rewarding and a great way to support our club. 8
