Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club, USA 57th Annual National Specialty Show 10/13/2018 Pine Hill, Georgia Brian Rix, Ricksbury Cavaliers, UK First of all, I would like to thank and congratulate the hard-working committee for laying on such a wonderful show. Every attention to detail was noted, from the ribbons and flower arrangements round the ring, to the wonderful rosettes collection, it really was a spectacular event. I was absolutely thrilled with the quality of the entry. When doing this critique, you will find that I will be repeating myself several times. This is not a bad thing, it means that you have a consistent type and quality of dogs. It is more difficult to judge good dogs than bad and when doing the critique, it is probably easier separating good dogs from bad, as you have more of a leeway to speak about. Minor details were splitting many of the classes in several instances. If I were to judge the same dogs the next day, I could have possibly put them in a different order, such was the high quality of these dogs. Thank you all for entering and making this such a memorable show. Last, but not least, I would like to thank the two stewards, David Frederick and Ellen Seidman, for keeping the ring running so efficiently. THE DOG CLASSES JUNIOR PUPPY DOG (3) 1. SHEEBA SUPERSTITION (Mitchell) 8½ month old very pretty headed Blenheim with lovely flat skull, well-placed ears, excellent pigment and soft gentle expression. Attractively broken coat with correct amount of bone for age, with a happy and outgoing temperament. One would hope this would be a start of the future. BEST PUPPY DOG, BEST JUNIOR PUPPY IN SHOW, BEST PUPPY IN SHOW 2. WELLSWORTH REFLECTION (Wells) Pretty headed 6 month-old Blenheim with a a well-broken coat, nice eye, good nose pigment, and with a correct mouth. Not as well developed as the winner. I just preferred the outline of the winner on the move as this stage. 3. HUNTLAND HEISMAN (Land/Land) 5-month-old Blenheim, again with a pretty head and expression. His mouth is incorrect at this moment in time, but as only 5 months old, this can change. Another one with a happy outgoing temperament. SENIOR PUPPY DOG (7) 1. WATERSEDGE NEW YEAR TREASURE (Walzer/Walzer) 9-month-old Blenheim with pretty head and expression and a nice dark eye. Correct mouth, well-tapered muzzle, good neck and shoulders. He kept a level topline on the move with good tail set and croup. More heavily marked Blenheim with a lovely deep rich colour. 2. MANORHOUSE GUNS N ROSES (McCaslin/Orns) Very attractively marked Blenheim with excellent textured coat, well-broken of good colour. 11-month-old with lovely head and dark eye, his mouth is just under at present, but a quality exhibit.

3. TUDOROSE DALTON ANGEL KISSES (Dye/Mixon) 11-month-old, more excitable than the others, just needs to settle and portray himself to his full advantage. Kept a level topline; I would prefer a slightly higher tail set, but a very stylish dog. 4. MARJORELLE CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, JW (Conley) 11-month-old more mature Blenheim a lot to like. Another one with a pretty head and expression. Heavily coated with well-angulated high quarters. In good coat and condition. GRADUATE PUPPY DOG (3) 1. MIMRIC INSTAGRAM (Hodges/Perkins) Almost 18-month- old mature dog, well bodied, nice round eyes, good nose pigment with correct mouth. At one point I mistakenly thought it was undershot. It was rather difficult to assess his mouth on the table as he tended to stick his tongue out when opening his mouth. Coat was of excellent texture with well-angulated hind quarters and a lovely outgoing temperament. 2. TRUELEGANCE MOONLIGHTER (Cromer/Cromer) 15-month-old Blenheim slightly more heavily marked than the winner, but richer in colour. He has excellent nose pigment with dark eyes with a good tail set and croup and a happy outgoing temperament. 3. BENTWOOD LIVELYOAK BLACK TIE AFFAIR (Borton/Harrison) 19-month old Tricolour, pretty head, nice bright tan in all the right places. He has a solidly marked jacket. Rather more reserved than the ones that stood in front. NOVICE DOG (2) 1. NIGHTINGALE TATOO (Mulligan/Duke) 2½-year old Tricolour with pretty head and expression, dark eyes and correct mouth. He has a good neck and shoulders and maintained a level topline on the move. Good tail set and carriage, in good coat and condition 2. TRUELEGANCE MOONLIT MILE (Cromer/Cromer) Very pretty headed 2-year old Blenheim with great expression and lovely large round dark eyes. He has good neck and shoulders. He kept a level topline on the move, but outline was spoilt by high tail carriage today. BRED BY EXHIBITOR DOG (7) 1. CH CHADWICK TELLTALE AUTHOR, JW (Eckersley) 2½-year old Blenheim with a pretty head and expression and large dark eyes which were well pigmented. He has good nose pigment and correct mouth with good neck and shoulders. He maintained a level topline on the move at all times with good tail set and croup. 2. TRUELEGANCE MOONLIGHT SUPERNOVA (Cromer/Cromer) 21-month-old very striking Blenheim, complete with lozenge. He has nice round dark eyes, but not quite as soft an expression as the winner. Kept a level topline on the move. He would benefit from slightly stronger hind quarters.

3. CH MIMRIC AMERICAN HEARTTHROB (Bolster/Hodges) 3-year-old Blenheim with a pretty head and expression. Another one with nice large round dark eyes and good nose pigment. He was stuffy around the neck, which made him not look as elegant on the move as the other winners, but he s a compact little dog with a lot to like about him. 4. CROSSBOW GREYHAWK DANIEL A KICKAPOO OF ZOOTS (Schiffman/Mittleman) Another Blenheim, nearly 3-years old in good condition. He has round, dark eyes with well-placed ears. I would like him a little shorter in his back and with a bit more of an outgoing temperament. JUNIOR AMERICAN BRED DOG (5) 1. ORCHARDHILL NEWS TO ME (Venier/Venier) 17-month old Blenheim dog with a pretty head, a little effeminate, pretty outline on the move around the ring. Needs to mature in body. 2. BROOKHAVEN FOREVER YOUNG (Bolster/Ayers) Another very nice dog only 13-months old. I thought he was the class winner at one point. Just not quite as soft in expression as the winner. A striking dog with a lot to like about him. 3. GEORJULI DRAGONHEART (Glasgow) Very attractively marked Tricolour. 15-month old with a beautiful coat and condition, bright tan around the face with a raven black coat. Nice round dark eyes, again not as soft in the expression. 4. FORESTCREEK ATCHAFALAYA (Cline) 7-month-old Blenheim, incorrectly entered in this class, so he looked immature compared to the others. Attractively marked, good nose pigment and nice expression. He maintained a level topline on the move. Maturity will strengthen his hindquarters, but a very promising puppy. AMERICAN BRED DOG (4) 1. ROYALMARK REMINISCENCE (Cameron) Pretty headed 4-yearold Blenheim, very nice expression, well placed round eye and good dark nose pigment. He has a correct mouth with enough neck for length of body. He is solidly marked with markings, which could give the impression of him being shorter in the neck. This, however, was not the case when I put my hands on him. 2. AMMIK ONE PARTICULAR HARBOR (Madden/Mixon) I thought at one point that this was my class winner, a little excitable on the table, nice round dark eye with good nose pigment. Very pretty head and expression, large round dark eyes, correct nose pigment with a lovely flat skull. When stacked this dog looked lovely, but on the move he was racing around the ring, which tended to make him lose his outline. He needs to settle on the move and could be a winner. 3. FOXWYN LOOK NO FURTHER (Baker-Fox) Another very correct head, nice round dark eyes, lovely flat skull with well-placed ears. Nice top skull, gorgeous expression and a lot to like about him. Not in the coat and condition of the two above him, but a nice dog.

4. INTRYNZIK BLASÉ (Goodwin) 22-month old Blenheim complete with lozenge and a very pretty head and expression. Coat was a little unruly compared to ones above him, but he has a great temperament and show attitude. 2ND GENERATION AMERICAN BRED DOG (3) 1. CHADWICK SHOOTING UPWARDS OF CEILIMOR (McCarty/Eckersley) 3-yearold Blenheim with a pretty head and expression. Well-balanced head, well placed ears, nice round dark eyes, and good nose pigment with correct mouth. Good neck and shoulders and he maintained a level topline on the move. Well-angulated hind quarters with good coat and condition. 2. CLARMARIAN HEIR APPARENT (Young May) Beautifully presented Blenheim in fabulous coat and condition. Very pretty head and expression, not quite as soft as the winner. Would benefit from not being so heavy, but moved with style. 3. TUDORR CHECKMATE (Mixon/Cline) 4-yearold Blenheim not quite in the coat and condition of the winner, but again with good temperament. Not a quite as pleasing in expression as the others. SPECIAL LIMIT BLENHEIM DOG (3) 1. ORCHARDHILL TOY MONEY (Johns/Venier/Venier) 2½ year old with a beautiful rich dark Blenheim coat with a stunning outline. Large dark eyes, good nose pigment and correct mouth. He has correct neck and shoulders, maintaining a level topline on the move with good tail set and croup. He would benefit from stronger hindquarters. A quality exhibit. 2. SIGMA CHI JOSE AT MINGCHEN (Henry/Henry/Whitney/Whitney0 Very attractively marked Blenheim with a pretty head, but not as soft and gentle expression as the winner. Nice large dark eyes, I would prefer the ear placement to by slightly higher. He has a good neck and shoulders and makes a pleasing outline. 3. DALVRECK STARSHINE (Ayers/Martz/McInally) Heavily coated Blenheim. Rather heavy in top skull. The high forehead detracted from the overall expression. He had round dark eyes, good nose pigment and correct mouth, good outgoing temperament and is in good condition. SPECIAL LIMIT TRICOLOUR DOG (3) 1. PASCAVALE DODGER (Jacks) 4-year old Tricolour, rather unschooled, however, underneath was a pretty shaped dog with a good head, expression and correct mouth. Well placed ears, good neck and shoulders. Kept a level topline on the move. A difficult dog to stand as he tended to sit for his handler. BEST TRICOLOUR DOG IN SHOW 2. SERAPHAVEN RETURN OF THE KING (Gogol)

Pretty headed Tricolour, which I thought was the class winner. Again, with bright tan markings and a raven black coat. Slightly longer in body than the winner, but with a good outgoing temperament. 3. EMENKAY DREAM LOVER (Vezina/Orns) Nice Tricolour, slightly bigger size than the others in the class. Beautiful coat and condition with correct amount of bone, well presented with a lovely soft gentle expression. SPECIAL LIMIT RUBY DOG (3) 1. ENG CH HARANA ERROL BROWN, ENG JW (Ayers/Martz/Koster) 3-year old, very pretty head and expression, good nose pigment, correct mouth, large round dark eyes. Correct neck and shoulders, maintained a level top line on the move. Coat was soft, silky and straight. He has good tail set, however, I would have preferred stronger hindquarters, but he was an easy winner of this class. BEST RUBY IN SHOW, BEST RUBY DOG 2. MEADOWLAKE KODIAK (Swanson) Little pretty Ruby nice round dark eye, good neck and shoulder and well-proportioned body. Just not in the coat and condition of the winner. Again, I would have preferred stronger hindquarters. 3. SNOWBIRD HOCUS POCUS (Miller) Well presented Ruby, in-between coats and not looking his best today. Good expression with nice round dark eyes. I would have preferred strong hindquarters. SPECIAL LIMIT BLACK-AND-TAN DOG (2) 1. DARANE HAPPY SONG (Markijohn/Kates) 2-yearold Black-and -Tan in good coat and condition. He has a pretty head and expression. Moved adequately back and front. Good length of neck and well-balanced body. BEST BLACK-and-TAN IN SHOW, BEST BLACK-and-TAN DOG 2. BONITOS COMPANEROS BULLETPROOF (Magera/Mitchell) Pretty headed Black-and-Tan shorter in the neck than the winner and rather wide in front, but a glamourous coated little dog with a good temperament. OPEN DOG (9) What a fabulous class, 10 Champions, all of high quality. It was literally like opening a box of chocolates and wondering which one to choose first. Dogs went card-less in this class that could have easily have won on another day. 1. CH KEAN CHRISTIAN AT SHIRMONT, JW (Henry/Henry/Keane) 2-year-old Blenheim, excellent head and shape, large round dark eyes which were well pigmented. Excellent nose pigment, correct mouth with well tapered muzzle. Excellent front, maintained a level topline on the move at all times. Well-angulated hind quarters with excellent drive from behind. I thought this a very exciting young dog, who eventually went on to win top honours and BEST IN SHOW, WINNERS DOG, BEST AMERICAN BRED IN SHOW, BEST BLENHEIM IN SHOW, BEST AMERICAN BRED

DOG, BEST BLENHEIM DOG, and BEST AMERICAN BRED from the MAJOR WINNERS. 2. CH BROOKHAVEN HERE COMES HOGAN, JW (Ayers/Martz/Savage Green) I feel terrible that this is a second placed dog because in any competition, this dog is an outstanding dog as well. I think he has the most gorgeous head and appealing eyes, lovely flat skull, prettiest of expression with well-placed ears. Super neck and shoulders, lovely compact body with well angulated hind quarters and great tail set and croup. The decision factor was he was just not quite as outgoing and enthusiastic as the winner, but happy to award him RESERVE WINNERS DOG, RESERVE BEST IN SHOW, BEST BRED BY EXHIBITOR IN SHOW, BEST BRED BY EXHIBITOR from the MAJOR WINNERS, BEST BRED BY EXHIBITOR DOG 3. CH FOXWYN COOL WATER (Norton/Baker-Fox) Another great dog with the prettiest head, again lovely soft gentle expression, good nose pigment and correct mouth, well bodied, perhaps not the hindquarters of the first two, and lovely outgoing temperament. Happy to award him 1st DOG AWARD OF MERIT 4. CH WOODSONG DELTA BLUES (Crancer/Kaiser) Again, no disgrace with this placing in this class, another day could be the winner. Lovely head and expression, lovely large round dark eyes, however, pigment not as good as the winner. Really first-class dog with elegant neck and shoulders maintained a level topline on the move. Great tail set and croup. Great dog, happy to award him 2nd DOG AWARD OF MERIT SENIOR OPEN DOG (4) 1. CH CHANTISMERE CAST A SPELL ON CORDUKE (Mulligan) 9-year old Blenheim looking good for his age, making a pretty outline, classic head complete with lozenge. Lovely dark eyes, in good coat and condition. 2. CH GRANTILLEY GOODWOOD AT TRUELEGANCE (Cromer/Cromer) 10-yearold bigger mould than winner, still looking good, classic outline, lovely large round dark eyes still giving a soft gentle expression. 3. OGGBRAE DON OTTAVIO (Bales/Bales) 7-year old dog with lovely head and expression, great eyes, as all of the exhibits had in this class, a real bonus. Keeping a level topline on the move. 4. CH ARANEL COLBY (Wells) 7-year old dog, well broken coat, with a pretty head and expression. In good coat and condition, just lost his outline on the move. THE BITCH CLASSES JUNIOR PUPPY BITCH (11) 1. BEARIVER CALIFORNIA GIRL (Toepfer)

8-month old Blenheim, lovely head and expression, nice dark eyes and good nose pigment. Ideal size, elegant on the move, with nice neck and shoulders. Good topline with nice tailset and croup. 2. WINDNSEA BRIGITTE BARDOT (Sutton/Sutton) Perfectly marked Tricolour of 6 months, with a well-broken coat. Nice bright tan, good nose pigment and correct mouth. Correct shape with sufficient bone, looked great on the move, but unsettled at times. 3. LINRICA MIRACLE BABY (Liu) Very eye-catching Blenheim, 9-months old, this was a strong contender to win the class, just lost out on maturity of winner. Nice outline. 4. NORTHPOINTE HEDERA COLCHICA (Mitchum) More heavily marked Blenheim, 10-month old of ideal size. I would like a more outgoing temperament, but another quality exhibit. This was a strong class and a good fourth. SENIOR PUPPY BITCH (5) 1. KEAN MAYBELLINE (Keane) 9-month old Blenheim, pretty head with large round dark eyes that were well pigmented, giving a soft gentle expression, good nose pigment and correct mouth. Looked great on the move, sound both ways. A star for the future I would think. BEST PUPPY BITCH AND BEST SENIOR PUPPY IN SHOW 2. SHADOWBROOK WISH UPON A STAR (Moody/Moody) 9-month old Blenheim slightly bigger mould than the winner, but not a big bitch. Pretty head and expression, nice round dark eyes giving a soft gentle expression. Not as settled in standing than the winner, just needs more schooling to complete the picture. 3. TUDOROSE MY BROWN EYED GIRL (Mixon/Mixon) A well-broken Blenheim of ideal size with good neck and shoulders. Moving well, just not as mature and developed in head as the winners. 4. MILETREE MAGNOLIA AT SHIRMONT (Henry/Henry) Pretty head and expression, sound moving, good front, nice topline, not as outgoing as the winners. GRADUATE PUPPY BITCH (8) 1. ASTARRING ALL THE CATS MEOW (Flowers Foster/Mohn) 16-month old Blenheim, a real toy spaniel, very pretty, in good coat and condition. She was overall well balanced and this won her the class. Very pretty head, a little high in the forehead. Could have a better front but the overall picture got the class. I liked her eye and bone size. It was a difficult decision. 2ND BITCH AWARD OF MERIT 2. TUDORR SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, JW (Mixon/Mixon) 15-month old of excellent breed type and, once settled, moved well. Just not in the coat and condition of the winner, but a close decision. 3. LIVELYOAK PERSUASION (Brokopp/Borton/Harrison)

Another pretty Blenheim, dark eyes and soft expression, nicely placed ears. She could have more neck. Good coat, nice size, attractively marked, but could have been a little more outgoing. A quality exhibit. 4. COVINGTON COGNAC AMBER (Schiffman/Murphy) Well broken, pretty head and expression, but lacked coat and maturity in this class. NOVICE BITCH (1) 1. BROOKHAVEN DON T STOP BELIEVIN (Marler/Ayers) 16-month old Blenheim, prettiest head and expression with lovely large round dark eyes. Good nose pigment and correct mouth. Kept a clean and elegant outline on the move. I thought a high-quality bitch surprised and amazed that she was still in novice. A lovely bitch. BRED BY EXHIBITOR (7) 1. CH JAYBA OOH LA LA, JW (Lander/Lander/George) 16-month old very pretty head and expression. Well-balanced, good front, short in back with good tail set and croup. She has well angulated hind quarters and moved soundly in both directions. With the brightest nose pigment. 2. CH ASTARRING EVERY SAILORS DREAM (Flowers Foster/Mohn) Really difficult class, two good exhibits, beautiful headed bitch with the largest dark eyes giving soft expressions. Great front, excellent neck and shoulders, slightly longer in the back that the winner. Outstanding little girl loved her a lot as she was really smart. 3. CHADWICK IN MY OPINION, JW (ECKERSLEY) Another well-coated and well-broken Blenheim with a pretty head and expression. Just didn t look quite as elegant as the winners. Good quality exhibit. 4. CH BENTWOOD FORESTCREEK DIAMOND AND SILK, JW (Cline) Pretty-headed Blenheim, well-broken, in good coat and condition. Needed more positive hindquarters, this pegged her back today. JUNIOR AMERICAN BRED BITCH (3) 1. ORCHARDHILL GOTTA ADORE ME, JW (Venier/Venier) 17-month old Blenheim in lovely coat and condition, smart shape, pretty head and expression. She has nice dark eyes, good nose pigment and correct mouth, with a good front, nice tail set and croup. A happy little girl in full bloom - looked sweet. 2. FORESTCREEK JINX (Cline/Cline) Very glamorous headed Tricolour with the prettiest of expressions, which is difficult to obtain in a Tricolour. Excellent raven black coat, nice bright tan, nice short back in beautiful coat and condition. She was unlucky to meet the winner. 3. LINRICA REACH FOR THE STARS, JW (Liu) Pretty headed Blenheim, sweetest expression with very dark expressive eyes. Just not in the coat of the winners today. Sound girl with happy temperament.

AMERICAN BRED BITCH (6) 1. JAYBA BON TEMPS (Lander/Lander) More heavily marked 2 ½ year old Blenheim. Very pretty head and expression, nice round dark eyes with good nose pigment. Good reach of neck, maintained a level topline on the move, correct amount of bone. Well-angulated hindquarters with good tail-set and croup. BEST BRED by EXHIBITOR from the BRED by EXHIBITOR CLASSES 2. ROYALCAPER VIVACE (Clayton) More well-broken Blenheim with a pleasing head with round dark eyes, in a disappointing class. I would have preferred her shorter in back. On the move was nice and moved soundly. 3. CHADWICK OH LA LA OF CHARDOMONT, JW (Greak/Comer/Eckersley) Blenheim complete with lozenge and pretty eyes. A bit longer in body and flies her tail, which spoilt her outline on the move. 4. BEKENHALL ROCK STAR (Orns/Vezina/Hall) Eye-catching 6-year-old Blenheim, nice dark round eyes. She is an elegant shape with deep rich coat colour. 2ND GENERATION AMERICAN BRED BITCH (8) 1. KRYSTLE STAR QUALITY (Torgersen/Torgersen) 4-year-old Blenheim bitch of ideal size. Attractively marked coat, pretty head and expression with good nose pigment. She has a good lay of shoulder and held a level topline on the move with good tail set and croup. 2. RUTHERFORD EVELINE (Jones) Another pretty Blenheim with a high quality coat.
