The Evergreen Golden Retriever Club The Golden West The Official Newsletter of the Evergreen Golden Retriever Club March 22, 2017 Volume 49, issue 3 *No General Membership meeting in March* Next General Membership Meeting on April 27, 2017 This Years P.U. Clinic 2017 from Nancy Kiesler (Chair of Clinic) This year s PU Clinic will be held on Saturday, May 13th. Yes that is the day before Mother s Day. Those wanting to schedule their dog can call Seattle Animal Eye Clinic at 206-524-8822. Cost this year is $28.00. Please remember that this is for pet Goldens only and is not to be used as a OFA Eye exam. Dogs with PU or other eye problems should not attend this clinic. I d really hate to see interest wane and attendance go down to the point that it wasn t worth having the clinic so please share this information with puppy buyers, colleagues and strangers. Seriously I don t see a Golden owner that I don t mention PU and the importance of screening and this clinic as an option. One of my friends from Port Ludlow had never heard of PU but has taken her Golden to the last 2 clinics. Also, the rescue dogs out there should also be encouraged to participate as well. Contact Nancy Kiesler with any questions at (360) 437-8091 or e-mail: goldresq@aol.com page 1

EGRC Information Booth at Seattle Kennel Club 2017 Co-chairing the SKC Educational Booth with Diane Murphy from EGRR has been a delight these past 3 years. Diane has an eye for pictures and placement and she remembers how to physically put that booth together. How much easier could she make it for me? During these past 3 years, we have met at Argus on Thursday, picked up the booth and tote, and than we have used rush hour traffic as an excuse for going to dinner at the Black Diamond Bakery. On Friday we meet again to set up the booth so it is all ready for Saturday s 8 AM show time. I m explaining the hows and whys of how we ran the booth because this was the last year that Diane and I will be co-chairing this event. I am more than happy to mentor someone and help with Argus and the set-up. Before each of you who read this, shake your head and say, No way I would like to tell you that EGRC members seem to really enjoy this opportunity of interacting and educating the public. This year I mentioned it at the Christmas party and I had people already volunteering. When I didn t put out a formal request for volunteers, the volunteers from past years were emailing me and asking if they could volunteer. How sweet is that? I am truly humbled... So, which one of you reading this newsletter would like to put their own stamp on this booth? Please feel free to contact me if you want specifics and remember I have volunteered to help you so that you are not left high and dry. OK, enough of the above. How many of you checked the SKC website and saw Mia, Sonic and Jackson holding baskets and soliciting donations for Rescue? That was taken last year and obviously it made such a big impression on the Seattle Kennel Club that they used it this year for advertising and to entice the public. Fast forward to this year and those same Goldens literally pulled $213.55 out of the public s pockets. Watching them work the crowd is worth the price of admission! We had a wonderful group of volunteers and the vast majority of them brought their dogs and answered many questions. The most popular questions revolved around English Creams. For those people who already had a Golden we asked if they knew about PU, the necessity of annual eye checks, and that Rescue had an eye clinic coming up soon. Of course we fielded questions about breeders and litters as well. It was a great week-end and I can t thank enough all of the Club members who made this a fun and educational event. Sandy Scudder page 7

Paws up to you Sandy and Diane!! Thank you to Sandy and Diane for all the effort you have put into creating this delightful educational Display of our wonderful breed for the last 3 years. We need two new people to step up to the plate next year, Diane and Sandy have done their share of work for our Goldens! page 8

2017 Specialty Update First, everyone please thank Shari for stepping up and taking on the Assistant Chairperson role for this year s specialty. It is the first time she has done this and it can be a daunting task. We were slow getting anything fully accomplished this year but in the last 6-weeks we have a lot to report. We have the contracts from the judges that EGRC is responsible for hiring. OKC hires the Obedience and Rally judges for the combined obedience trial. We have received approval from AKC for the new date and venue. AKC has also approved the slate of judges. Mary Jane Shervais Obedience (hired by OKC) Sandy Svendsen Rally (hired by OKC) Collette Jaynes Conformation and Junior Showmanship Sylvia Donahey Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes A house has been rented for the judges that is only 3 miles from the show site. The cost is the same as budgeted for a hotel room and the judges are much closer and allow us easier access to them to provide better hospitality. I have reached out to a couple of people to handle judges hospitality that will take them to dinner/breakfast and transport to the show site. Work with OKC has also been very productive over the last 6 weeks. Shari and I attended the specialty club meeting with the other 36 specialty clubs. OKC is providing all the tables and chairs that we require and are also providing addition 10x20 tents in our ring. This will drastically reduce the items needed from Argus. OKC will also provide tables and chairs in the venue for our potluck. So no moving of tables between the raffle and potluck will be required. There was still some questions regarding where rings were going to be and where club activities would take place. At the meeting OKC offered to do a walk-through of the site to clarify any confusion and confirm all the club s needs were met. Shari and I showed up for the walkthrough and we were the only club represented. This allowed Tim to spend a lot of time with us and walked us through: Where the rings would be located. We will have 100 x 50 In the grass area between the barn hunt and the horse barn. Where the 20 reserved grooming spaces would be for golden. In the horse barn directly across from the rings. Where the generator would be located. Just outside the horse barn. What shade tenting would be provided. A 20 x 40 tent with misters will be right outside the ring and no other breeds are around so we won t have to share with any other breed. There will also be 2 10 x 20 popups IMPORTANT RV PARKING HAS CHANGED. JIFFYS IS NOT MANAGING PARKING. OKC is doing their own parking this year. OKC is developing and interactive map with the RV spots shown. When you sign up for parking, you will click on the spot you want and pay online. The exception to this rule is for specialty clubs. OKC asked for the number of spaces the clubs would like to have and these spots will be marked as unavailable when the map goes live on their website. The specialty clubs will assign the spots and provide the details and money to OKC. page 9

One thing that is important to know, at this time it appears that the only parking inside the fencing will be for handlers and those reserved for the specialty clubs. EGRC has been given 20 spots, in the grass area directly behind the restroom building and the rabbit barn which is relatively close to the rings. EGRC spaces will be available to those that are chair people or working in another capacity at the show. The below jobs will be eligible for one of the 20 spots. As you will see, there are plenty of openings so if you would like to volunteer, and secure one of the EGRC reserved RV parking space, please let Shari or I know. If you have any questions about what any of the jobs entail, please let Sheila know. 1. General Show Chair Sheila Iturriaga Colyer 2. Assistant Show Chair Shari Phillips 3. GAYLE WATKINS SEMINAR (Claudia) No update. SUNSHINE (Nancy) No report UNFINISHED BUSINESS: 1. Discussion on Program Chair. Board discussed April meeting program, Dr. Sullivan not available. (continue on next page) page 14

NEW BUSINESS: 2. Nancy brought up the current AKC proposed Amendment to CHAPTER 2, SEC- TION 3 of the RULES APPLYING TO DOG SHOWS, to be voted on at the Delegates meeting in a couple of weeks. This would affect EGRC since it would presumably would give more power for AKC to override the denial of one all breed club to another to have a show their territory. (e.g. WIKC and Sammamish KC) Discussion of requesting to GRCA to have their Delegate (Ellen Hardin,) vote in favor. Ane will contact Ellen. 3. Deb Pampiks passed out a chart showing which members were on the Board for the last 7 years.
